Hi sorry if this topic has been covered before but i'm new to this website.

Just wondering if anyone out there has done a fuel efficiency test to see if you get better mileage when using the car in auto or driving with the paddles.

Reason I ask is that I havn't driven an auto for over 20 years and my XF seems to rev higher before changing up in auto than I can do using the paddles.

Got a 3.0 diesel by the way. Getting about 34 to the gallon in auto mainly urban bypass driving at around 50mph.

Thanks.

Hi Mark

Firstly, Welcome to the club!

Automatic transmissions have changed considerably over the past twenty years.

Noticeably, features like the paddle shift...to take some control over the gear shifting and giving the driver some input. But also, the auto transmission is now completely electronically controlled and if programmed properly at the development stage should provide the best shift patterns and also take into account the overall vehicle economy.

It may also shift up later to allow the Diesel Particulate filter (DPF) to regenerate and keep the system clean and unclogged.

Fuel consumption depends a lot how you drive.  I do tend to leave it in auto as my S Type has a 6 speed auto box as against a 5 speed when I use the manual shift.

I found that the second turbocharger cuts in at 2000 revs which is just on 69 mph.  Keeping it at below that level I got 46.1 mpg driving down to Weymouth last summer.  With stop start driving  on the way back I only got 36.6 mpg, although on the way back I did some driving at just over 70 mph when able to do so.

But a  good point to think about is that occasionally you can give the diesel engine a good exercise by pressing the "S" button and letting it go a bit.  It can be quite enjoyable.  You can't do it, however, when you have a speed governor in the car.

Can anyone tell me what miles to expect in a 2,2Ltr d XF,I always got 5oo miles to the tank  with my Audi 2,0Ltr

I am asking this because I haven't collected the car yet.

Welcome to the Club, Richard,

The 2.2 diesel is a very economic engine, and is certainly more frugal than my 2.7 diesel which averages around 40 mpg with a mixture of runs.  That is around  500 to the tank.

Again, it depends how you drive, although the diesel needs a bit of strong driving now and then.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks Peter ,that has been very helpful.I have not exchanged cars yet and really was a bit concerned about the fuel.Really need to know what size of engine to go for but probably the smallest and can get it remapped but I will have to find out if that would affect my warranty. I suspect it would.

Thanks again.

Thanks.

Only had mine in traffic so far. The 22 I'm seeing is rather disappointing but then I guess it's a bit early to judge. I'd be quite happy with 34!

I have a 61 plate 2.2 which I bought recently and am getting around 47mpg after a couple of tankfuls. This is my first auto for a while and am still finding my feet. The 8 speed seems to have relatively low 1st and 2nd gears causing either slow acceleration or high reving. I am also using the paddles in D mode to flick up a gear occasionally and then allowing it to move itself back into D mode. On the motorway using the paddles to hold 8th as you overtake at 70-80 also stops the kick down. I also ran some Redex engine cleaner through as well - not sure tis make a massive difference. I would be interested to hear if anyone has used Terraclean or similar and did that make a difference? Also has anyone chipped the 190bhp 2.2 engine and any thoughts from a fuel economy / performance point of view?

Hi Ian,

I have a 2.7 litre Diesel S type auto, and about 9 months after I got it, I had it terra cleaned.  The difference I saw was immediate, with both improved performance and better economy.  The best I have had on a long run was 53 mpg on a 90 miles drive on dual carriageway and the M1, the latter being limited to 50 mph dues to road works.  The round trip was 46 mpg, and I didn't hang around.

I also use Wynn's Diesel engine cleaner every 3000 miles, which is about twice a year and the best quality Diesel fuel.

Regards,

Peter.

A bit late to this one but I find driving in winter mode help with the economy. Stops the loud pedal being too active.

Definitely avoid dynamic mode and sport if you are worried about economy  :D

Hi Colin,

The S Type only has the "S" button which I don't use that frequently

The statistics do tell us that under the same conditions a manual gearbox is slightly more frugal than an automatic.

Hi Karol,

That is a very good example of what can be achieved with steady driving, and shows how good the Ingenium engine is.

I have a little widget  that I plug in to the OBD2 connection and when installed it tells me how good [or otherwise] my driving is.  You have to use an App on your mobile phone which tells you your "marks" as it were.  Yesterday we went to Burton-on-Trent from Sutton Coldfield, and it told me that my driving was excellent and that over the 18.8 miles on the return journey I was marked at 92.8%  Last week my total drive was 92.6%.

Regards,

Peter.

I am keeping trip B content from new. As I am writing this post I have done 4302 miles with 46 mpg, 55 % driving style and over 6 hours of eco stop/start. It is incredible that thank to auto stop/start system I have saved my engine of running for that time.
