sorry ment to say that the car is automatic

What engine, Neil?  If a diesel the max revs is just under 5000rpm and the petrol can go up to 8000, although I would never give it that much.  6000 rpm seems OK,  but the engine must have been getting a bit hot.

hiya peter, the car is a 2.5 petrol v6. s type.i took it out again today, and give it some beans, and the light came on again, when i checked the water levels,it was a bit low,but after a while the levels went back to normal,it seems that when i drive it hard, the engine seems to suck most of the water out of the expanstion tank, and when it cools down, the level returns to normal, there are no water leaks any where on the car,so iam not losing any water at all,

That sounds a bit strange, Neil.  Has the coolant been replaced recently?  Is the engine temperature gauge sitting at the normal position? And is the Oil level OK?

I am just guessing at what might be wrong, but it is always worth checking something that can be rectified cheaply.

coolant has not been replaced,or even topped up.temp gauge reads normal, even when the low coolant warning light comes on when driven hard,it just seems that the engine block sucks all of the water from the coolant tank, where it is putting it is a mystery to me.and the engine Oil level is also fine.

Hi Neil,

I have ben reading this issue with interest, and have been googling around till I found someone with a similar problem.  Apparently it was the sensor in his case.

It is worth trying out the electrical connections around the sensor.

I am unsure, Neil as my car is a 2.7 diesel, but it must be somewhere close to the coolant reservoir/radiator.

jagrepair, com could well have a chart.

Regards,

Peter.
