Reversing sensors

when i use reverse all i hear is a long tone noise and not the beeping i would expect  can anyone give me an idea as to what the problem could be

A faulty sensor, Mark.  They are not expensive but finding out which one will need a Code Scanner or a Jaguar dealer which will be more expensive than the sensor.

 

I had the same problem with my X Type, also a 2005 model.

 

If you know a good mechanic he will probably have a code scanner, or you can borrow mine if you wish and if you feel you can do the job yourself.

Actually, it is seems to be possible to identify a faulty parking sensor in X-Types by listening to them. Read the second post in this thread:

Also, make sure the sensor surface is clean. Is it cold outside? Some have said their cars (and mine as well) occasionally just give a continuous beep while reversing if it's really cold outside, while otherwise they work normally.

I kept the sensors clean, but never thought about getting down on my knees to listen.

i have heard that before when i had the same problem on a rover 75 apparently  you can hear a clicking sound on the working once

Hi Mark,

 

These sensors are a new thing to me.  I had a Rover Sterling for 11 years.  I never bumped it into a wall  --  connected the tow bar with the bricks now and then.

 

I live in Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield which is very close to the Staffordshire border.  And you?

Hi Mark,

If it's any consolation my X Type rear park sensors give a continuous tone occasionally (Twice since Sept) when it's cold and I haven't used the car for 4 or 5 days, the first time I cleaned the sensors and all was fine the second time this failed to work, however after a 15 20 mile drive it seemed to clear itself, I think if it's going to be a repetitive problem I'll just replace the sensors when the weather improves
