Today the engine light came on, but with no message in the message centre.  The car is running beautifully.  It came the time to use my scanner, but when I plugged it in and set it up it told me that it could not make a connection to the vehicle.

 

Has anyone had this experience? That was question 1.

 

Question 2 is what do I do next?

Thanks, Trevor.  I will try that later.  Today, is man in apron day and I am preparing a very nice Northern dish, based on Fresh Atlantic Cod delivered from Grimsby, deep fried in beer batter, with chipped potatoes, and those quintessentially Northern delicacies, Mushy peas.  

 

There was a story about a lad from Widnes who went into a Fish and chip shop when on holiday and asked if they had any mushy peas.  He was told they they had just put some on a couple of hours ago, to which he replied that he would come back in a couple of days when they were done.

 

So first things first, and after dinner, I will talk to the Jaguar.  I have also looked in the service portfolio, and though I did insist on a full service when I bought it, the previous service was on the 29th March 2013.  It has been known that main dealers sometimes forget to reset the computer after they have serviced a car.

It's " man in an apron day" every day for me, I do all the slavery . Up T' North chips are regarded as one of your "five a day" aren't they? Since the heart attack I've not eaten any known fat, sugar or salt, I always build my own food and never buy any pre prepared or pre packed food, or eat out.

 

I have lost four stone, feel very well, and my cholesterol is so low i have to buy some online !

 

And you are right, the main dealers do sometimes forget to reset the computer, they did so with mine, another reason why I'm giving them a wide berth !

I can only suggest you try the OBD in another vehicle, at least you will know if its the OBD or the car.

Its most likely to be the OBD.

 

Come down south and use mine!.......  and I will get some real food, Pie & Mash , or Eels & Mash with liquor and vinegar

Wigan is the World Heritage Site for pies.  I am surprised that there isn't an underground pie pipeline [and black pudding] to Kent!

I have done some research in to what happened when England was invaded.  The Scots were the ones who could run the longest and fastest. The Welsh were those who could run and climb, and the Irish were those who could swim.  The Southerners were those who could surrender, and the Northerners were those who could fight.

 

 

It is good theory, anyway.

 

I know a great pie shop in Greenwich, two great fish and chip shops, one in Muswell Hill, and the other in North St, near Euston.  All three were founded by missionaries from the North.

I said the South was full of Northerners, not many seem to go the other way though, I think it's the snow in the Summer, the tripe, and English not being spoken are the main drawbacks . But I'm coming for a swift visit next month, I'll bring some veg and salad stuff with me, and other food parcels

These are tiny pieces of micro electronics which help your supercharger turn petrol into airborne hydrocarbons and stop your supercharger turning your tyres into airborne hydrocarbons

Only the first bit, to my knowledge diesels aren't powerful enough to burn rubber! (that should kick things off nicely!)  :D

Hi peter, hadn't realised how close u are to me in Freckleton just outside Preston, u might have to let me know about your mechanic and if he is mobile or works from home as I might be needing him myself as no garage around hear will touch my car as they are not geared up for them, my mates car is still at the garage and this is week 4 and still not done, went in for glow plugs changing and 1 sheared, it's a joke. Don't know what the bill is going to be as the head had to come off, but he is putting a new timing belt on so he knows he has another 105,000 miles. My abs fault is still coming coming up from time to time but it's running fine and the garage plugged in and it's got no faults, so I'm going bald from scratching my head. I can't help u with the OBD problem as I ain't got a clue what it is, I only have a full stop after my name.have a nice day, I'm off under the wife's Astra now as it's playing up, can't win.

My friend works as a nurse for Macmillian on the Isle of Wight , and she said the amount of truck and bus drivers she gets in with cancer is startling ! the stuff really isn't good for the health, i'm truly suprised that it's allowed to be sold .

Thankfully, I'm among the newer breed of truck drivers who aren't morbidly obese with a diet of cholesterol and chips.

I keep decent breakfast cereal in my truck and have that in the morning, then will generally eat something I make myself either on the go or from home. I'm not a tramper either so I'm home each night to a proper meal too.

I'm no Saint though, with my share of occasional ready meals and a few beers.

Your friend is absolutely spot on though. Many of the drivers I meet are candidates for the morgue.

I cycle twice a week and cover around 100-150 miles too just because I'm conscious of the health implications my profession has. Poor diet and lack of exercise, but given that many truckers work 12-15 hour days and often 6 days a week, I'm not surprised. It's quite a shocking industry

Very sensible, Mick.  I no longer cycle because both my knees give me problems --  arthritis  --  but I do try to do some walking every week.  I put on weight after I retired, but when I found out how much I had put on I started a slow process to lose and keep weight off. I am now very close to the weight I was 20 years ago.

 

Some occupations can lead to an unhealthy life style and sometimes a culture  ---  a couple of pints after work, for instance --- and it is only when you sometimes have a shock that you change your lifestyle.

 

On topic, my mechanic is coming to look at why the engine amber light is on before we take a short break in Liverpool next week.

Liverpool! you have my condolences, I had the misfortune of being born there .

 

I cycle on the excercise bike 13 miles a day, and do a short spell on the rowing machine  and walk three miles every morning, also a long walk over Exmoor every Sunday . I've lost four stone and am also the weight i was 20 years ago. It's amazing how a heart attack wakes one up!

 

 

"How's the diet going?" I asked my mate.


"Not good." he sighed, "I had eggs for breakfast this morning."


"Oh dear." I sympathized, "Fried?"


"Cadbury's."

Yesterday I put in some "top of the range" diesel and then gave the car a good workout on the A38.  This morning the amber light did not come on.

 

My mechanic came and his diagnostic scanner said that it had been the EGR valve, which the blast up the A38 had cured.

 

My OBD scanner seems to be a duff one!

I would anticipate that if you've had the light on because of the EGR valve that it would rear its' ugly head again at some point.

It could be that the 'workout' has given it a jolt to get it freed up temporarily but without removing it and cleaning it, there is really no way you can be sure it will stay clear. The build-up of soot etc required to cause it to stick would be impossible to clear with a good thrashing.

Once clean however, a good thrashing will prevent it becoming blocked again. I know a couple of Police mechanics and they've never had problems with EGR valves on Police cars!
