Hi Just wanted to say hello and complement you all on a great forum filled with a wealth of knowledge and interesting facts.

I have just purchased a 1999 Jaguar XJ8 3.2 LWB.........and have started to work through some of the items that need addressing due to the price I paid and the history of the car. But what a car!!! in navy blue with chrome window trims looks stunning, and the drive is unreal smooth........apart from some mechanical issues I'm over the moon with my XJ.

Had the car a couple of days now and sorted out the key fobs "both not working" a good clean and new batteries now working as good as new, replaced rear view mirror via eBay and a thoroughly good clean and polish makes the car look like I paid £1000's

Why are these cars so cheap to buy second hand??? I have a Mercedes E class diesel and apart from fuel consumption "isn't as bad as I thought" the Jag will be my first choice every time.

Now the problems!!! Rumble from the rear at 60+ mph??? the rear wheel bearings are ordered as I had at least 3-4mm play in rear wheels, but I don't think the rumbling is all down to the wheels.....feels more like prop or maybe diff?? all guesses but have booked it into a Jaguar specialist near me to find out what could be possibly wrong. only time will tell.

I look forward to using the forum in the future.

Welcome Liam ,

I don't know why the cars are so cheap second hand, but they all seem fantastic regardless of age !

I owned two Aston Martin DB9's before this XJ Supersport. The jag is so superior in every way it is laughable !

I cannot see me ever buying anything different than a Jaaaag !

I nearly got an XJ in 2011  --  just £9500 with a relatively low mileage, around 9 years old.  I had been chauffeur driven all its life and maintained regardless of cost. The only reason I didn't get it was that it was a long wheel base, and the insurance on it was quite high as it had belonged to the Queen.

I think the depreciation on some of the most expensive cars can be quite severe. I bought a Rover Sterling in 2000 that was 8 months old with every extra that could be fitted.  It was the MD's car of a major Rover dealer.  New it cost £27,500. I paid £12,500, and when I sold it in 2011 --  eleven and half years later I got £500.

My XJ supersport  (2012)was a Jag directors car and cost £93K new, I paid £50K for it last November, a dealer would probably offer me £30K now .

Thanks for the welcome guys :) These Jaguars second hand are fantastic value for money the fuel doesn't even matter.....To be honest have broken all the rules buying my Jag.....fully stamped service book upto 115,000miles "no receipts" to prove what had been done by the 1 owner chauffeur company (Alan Sugar's) then the 2nd owner has done 25,000 miles in 6 years "no bills but serviced by his neighbour" seemed a genuine guy, retired police man got the Jag for his daughter's wedding and kept it ever since :) it's done just 200miles in the last 2 years. I'm hoping it'll be ok but do have a few issues to sort out. As Peter said the depreciation is the problem but for me it's gives great value for money.......Trevor the comment v Aston Martins gives me great pleasure to know I'm driving around in something that's up there with the best for under a £1000, I was out the weekend and had people looking at the Jag whenever I stopped.......love it lol

If this one turns out ok I will sell my mercedes and just keep the Jag!!!

Liam,

The new F Type Coupe R-S will cost £90K , The Aston Martin Vanquish starts at £180k , The Jag is going to slaughter it !

I have never been so disillusioned in my life over my DB9's  , vastly overrated, shoddily built, not very fast , tech designed by Fred Flinstone . and notoriously unreliable . It looked good and sounded good (but so did the wife when i married her ) .

It was going to be my dream car, but knowing what I know now I'd have a Jag every single time . The biggest let down since i saw the Beatles live !

Well Trevor, you've just shattered every one of my childhood dreams! I've said for years that if I win the lottery I'll have a brand new Aston Martin Vanquish, but now.............. I think I'll keep my X-Type!  ;)
