I have now twice left my S Type parked under cover while I have been away and on both
occasions when I return the car seems to have gone into a sleep mode and the
door open remote does nothing but as soon as I use the key to unlock it
everything wakes up and works fine is this normal for the S Type.

The only problem I have is that the rear brake pads seem to stick to the rotors and
the handbrake does not want to release as it should on the first time I drove
forward and reverse a little and there was a small bang and the brakes released
and worked as normal after that.

But on the second time the brakes were locked on a little more but did again
release after moving the car forwards and backwards until the pads released
from the rotors again.

This time I did get the warning from the dashboard warning handbrake fault but this
went away after the brakes released.

Does any member know if it is possible to park the car for an extended period and
not deploy the electronic hand brake I am sure if this is possible it would
prevent the problem of the pads locking themselves to the rotors.

Any help or advice on this matter will be gratefully received.

Hi Richard,

 

When I bought my s type I was told that some people never used the electronic park brake but just put the car into Park mode.

 

I do use my park brake, but have had "Park Brake Malfunction" displayed twice.  On each occasion I have had to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to allow the computer to reboot.

 

It does seem possible to leave the car in Park mode for some time.

 

Why the remote door lock does not work mystifies me, though.

I have left my car for extended time, 3 & 4 months, first time used a trickle charger, was in a private garage, the second in underground car park, no trickle charger.

I had no trouble and the car started and handbrake worked fine.

 

However you have a good point regarding the handbrake sticking, in my case the handbrake engages automatically when park is selected, and releases when I select drive, and I can release it manually (I think) depends how long you intend to leave the car I think I will consider leaving the handbrake off next time I lay up the car as I cant get a trickle charger on it I might even remove the battery and leave it in the flat on trickle charge.

Hi Stan,

 

The handbrake disengages automatically when you put the car into Reverse or Drive.  When I know that I will be waiting a long time, such as Road Works with temporary traffic light, I usually put the car into neutral and engage the handbrake.

 

Taking the battery off is not a bad idea, although you do have to reset a few things when you connect it again.  When I laid up my caravan for the winter I used to take the battery off and keep it on trickle for every other week or so.

Thanks for the replies but like you said I think the handbrake is applied automatically when you select park and remove the key because when you turn the ignition switch back on the handbrake is already on engaged.

 

What I would like to know is there a way to leave the gearbox in park and remove the keys lock and leave the car with the electronic handbrake not engaged on is this possible does anybody know?

Hi Richard,

 

I have just gone to my car and tried taking the key out with the car in Park and the handbrake not engaged.

 

What happened is that when I took the key out the brake immediately engaged. When I got the car the salesman told me that people mostly left the car in park and didn't bother with the handbrake, which is apparently not so.

 

I locked the car, and then opened it and it showed the handbrake as engaged.

I am not sure but think if you put the car in park and put your foot on the brake and disengage the hand brake as you turn off and remove the key the parking brake does not come on.

 

I turn the ignition back on and the handbrake is not on but I am not sure if it does engage if you then get out of the car and lock the doors using the door lock fob.

 

If this is possible i would rather do this than disconnect the battery as I am sure this would cause more problems knowing how easy it is to upset the electronics on some Jaguars.

 

Perhaps another member could try this and let me know thier results.

Hi Richard,

 

I put my car in Park, disengaged the handbrake with my foot on the brake pedal, the handbrake light went out, but as soon as I removed the key, the handbrake light came on, and that was before I go out of the car.

 

I think a second opinion would be good.

Searching the internet for more information on the handbrake found this on a site called fix ya.com does this sound right.

 

My S type parkbrake motor is starting to make funny noises and the "Parkbrake Fault" message appears. I need a new motor about £90 cost + labour. This can't be done for another two weeks so to stop it failing and leaving my brakes on you can do the following to ensure it does not come on when leaving the car.
Put the automatic gearbox in "parking" and push the parkbrake button down (i.e. to ensure it does not come on). Keep it pushed down and take the ingnition keys out of the it will not start the parkbrake motor. Whe you next get in the car, you will not see the "Park" light come on meaning the parkbrake is not on.
Only do this if the car is on the flat to be safe.

Hi Richard. This looks like an old post now, but just in case you still arenot sure about your park brake, when you exit the car and press the key fob you should be able to see the brake warning light come on from outside the vehicle (the red one). If you don't see it, then I would suggest it is not on. It stays on for a few seconds so should give you time to check.

Park brake issues on the S type are never old.

 

It seems to me that the cold weather is not helping my S type.

 

It had the Parkbrake fault twice today!

 

It has been perfect for months and then the cold weather and less use of the car seems to affect it.

 

I will not let it win!

Hi Peter.

I have had my 2007 2.7 for nearly three years now, and the handbrake has gone faulty three times. Twice due to low battery voltage (I had various electical items on for a long period without the engine running once, and trying to jump start another car whilst my engine was just ticking over).And once when the battery was disconnected for several days while I had the engine re-conditioned! At 98,000 miles the crankshaft broke! Along with the new crankshaft I had a £4,000 + bill.I was not happy, but if I hadn't had it repaired it would have been scrap. Anyway,If the battery voltage drops by around two volts, this problem will occur. It is possible that the cold weather affects your battery if it is a little weak, or you have to turn it over more than usual to start it. The first two times I had the problem I took it to a Jag specialist and he re-programmed the ecu, but the third time, I learnt the trick explained elsewhere on this forum and that worked very well for me (and a lot cheaper than the Jag guy!). Keep your battery voltage up and you should be ok. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.  I have had my s type since June 2013 and got a full service history.  I have only done 59,000 and the service history indicates that a new engine was fitted by Jaguar at just under 22,000 miles, so other than a EGR valves warning -- rectified by a good blast -- there have been no problems.

 

I don't do very many long runs nowadays, being well retired, so it could well be the battery needing a charge on a regular basis.  I will do that weekly, I think.

Quick question for Tester10 - it's an old link but what was the "trick" you mention to avoid the ECU being re-programmed?

2007 2.7XS - car parked up during lockdown but battery ran low couple of times. Now got parkbrake fault message. Have tried resetting the PBM in the boot & have now fitted new battery as it was still on its original and struggling to start in cold weather. Now starts fine but still got park brake fault message. 

Any ideas/advice welcome.

You appear to have correctly got a new battery.  

Does the park brake message arrive when the park brake is working properly? If so, it just needs removing by an OBD2 code reader.

The other slight question is that have you reset your  radio, your windows, your  other settings etc

hi

park brake fault usually occurs when the battery is low, low battery effect all modules on the car, if battery voltage drops too low, the modules go into fault

make sure the battery is also fully charged, left on charge over night

you get fault if either, the calipers hand brake arms have gone stiff, handbrake cables have gone stiff or epb motor has gone tight, ideally you need to get it plugged into to Jaguar ids/sdd which will tell you what the exact fault is

you can quickly reset the epb module by unplugging the epb module in the boot for about a minute, when you plug it back in  and switch the ignition on you should get the calibration message

you can also drive the epb motor manually with 12 volts to make sure it works and sound ok and may also free it off,

also if your boot gets lots of damp, as some suffer with water ingress, it may have a faulty epb module
