Hi Adrian,

I have never come across that one.  Would it be possible to go back to where the key was cut and see what they say?

After all, £45 isn't cheap/

Hi Adrian, as far as I know each key is fitted with an electronic device which is programmed to the cars electronics. When the key is placed in the ignition a decoding process is used to validate the key and the car cannot be started unless the key is programmed to the vehicles electronic system. In other words the new key you have had cut if it is not programmed to your car's electronics isn't going to start it. Unfortunately I think the only way to get a programmed key is through a Jaguar dealership and they will ask for proof of vehicle ownership, they will also require the key number which would originally have been on  a sticky label on the key. Jaguar advise that this label is removed for security reasons and kept safe should it be needed in the future, so you may not have the number. If you don't Jaguar I would think could trace it from the cars VIN number. Whichever way you look at it to get a spare key to start your car isn't going to be cheap. This is my take on the situation, however other members may know differently and if so any information that is forthcoming will be of benefit to us all. Best wishes and good luck Geoff.

Hi Adi

Geoff's bang on about the chip, Its a transponder. you will need the code, and it won't be cheap getting a key cut and the transponder coded. I'm in the same boat as you, new car only one key. Sorry for the bad news but best of luck, Karl

You will need to take BOTH keys to a Jaguar dealership and have them reprogrammed to the vehicle as your new key will have no programming to deactivate the immobiliser. Hope this helps

Adrain,

I think Josh is correct, thinking back I had my spare set replaced under warranty, thery said they couldn't just send a new key through the post as they needed the vehicle as well to programme the key to, which was a 140 mile round trip .

So unless anyone knows of a different way I think you will have to do what Josh suggests .

Well done, Adrian.

Finding the right man is always good, and when key fobs go duff there might be a queue at the Stall in Cas market.
