The auto gearbox fault warning came up on my s-type 2.7d 2005 last weekend  with no noticeable difference ?  When re-starting after a couple of hours it had gone out and car seemed fine. Should I attempt to service the gearbox -change Oil ?? Car has only done 67k

Hi Alan,

The auto gearbox is  supposed to last for ever.  Some owners do change the Oil occasionally.

I owned a Rover Sterling for over 11 years which had a dipstick to check the gearbox Oil, which I did regularly but never found it wanting.

The Jaguar gearbox Oil gets no mention at all in the Owner's Handbook.

I would be inclined to carry on as normal unless you get another warning.  Changing the gearbox oil is not cheap, from what I hear.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Alan,

Jaguar say it's sealed for life,

The ZF technician I spoke to recommended a service every 100,000 km or so. This should include a sump change, it holds the filters and is prone to leaking.

I'm having mine done in about a week from now for £410.

I'll let you know if it makes any difference

hi allan jaguar say the gearbox Oil should last the lifetime of the car. as do bmw audi merc ect. but in reality thats not true. some of us up here in central scotland 30 odd of us all jags old and new attended a tour at mackies automatic transmissions here in glasgow. a factory tour. and the sealed for life gearbox Oil was blown out the water. mackies say that you should get the gear box Oil and thers a filter in ther to changed between every 50-60,000 miles. they are the only zf rated place by all manufactures here in scotland.  cost about 2-300 quid. you would have to google it up to see whos close to you.my xk is approaching 50,000 and i intend to have it done this year charlie

I bought the Merc spec Oil and filter and gasket for my 98k XKR autobox and got a local specialist to do the change (as I was a bit unsure on the 'cycling' thing).

Labour was about £100 and parts were £70 odd iirc, so under £200 and a huge difference, much smoother and good for another 100k, get it done imho....
