  1. The top mounting on the spring can fail, the rubber deteriorates and that can lower the car. The only other thing is the spring has compressed due to age. The shock absorbers don’t affect the ride hight. Check the ride hight from the centre of the wheel to the wheel arch and see how much you have lost in clearance.
  2. On my 2002 XKR the fault was a break in the flexible wires connecting to the hubs on the front. Both sides were faulty.
  3. Buy a code reader and read the fault codes before you do anything else.
  4. The pillar job is quite easy and can be completed by any competent DIYer. The roof lining is a bit more tricky but again can be done by any competent home mechanic. As previously mentioned YouTube is a good place to start. There are companies on eBay who sell everything required to do this. Make sure you get the correct colour match if you only do the pillars.
  5. Sorry but I think you need a new throttle position sensor as this is a classic fault. The track on the sensor wares and you get this fault up randomly. It will get more often as the wear gets worse. Change the sensor and it will be OK.
  6. I HAD ONE KEY REPLACED BY THE MAIN DEALER STRATSTONE. I DID HAVE THE SECOND KEY AT THE TIME. THEY DID NOT ASK ME TO BUY A SECOND KEY.
  7. All the X100 XKR's have Mercedes boxes. There are some Ford bits, switches etc.
  8. The quick fix for the exhaust is to remove the two back boxes and replace with straight through pipes. Available on Ebay at about £150.00. Other exhaust options are pricey.

  11. It is possible to replace the cloth yourself if you are a moderately good DIYer. Remove the old roof lining in one piece as previously described. Remove the old cloth from the hard shell and wire brush to remove glue and any residual material. Purchase new headlining material and fabric glue from several sources on the internet. Apply the glue and work the cloth back into place to remove any sags, wrinkles etc. Replace the recovered hard she as previously discussed. Door pillars can be done in the same way if require. There are several videos on YouTube to help.
  12. IF YOU BUY A BLUE TOOTH READER THEN YOU HAVE TO MATCH IT TO YOUR PHONE TYPE. OS OR ANDROID. OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT WORK.
  13. Jason, you can break the red sealing tab on the top of the transmission fill tube and dip the transmission oil level. A custom dip stick is available on Ebay for 5 to 10 GBP. Alternatively use a long (about 1 meter) stiff wire. Push the dip stick in untill the end hits the bottom of the sump (ie untill it cant go any further) There are two levels one for hot and one for cold, they will be marked on the custom dip stick. If you use the stif wire then google the measurements. Check the oil sample on the end of the dip stick. Wipe the stick on a clean white kitchen towel. It should be red in colour when new. If it is dark brown and smells burnt then it needs changing ASAP. Anything in between and its your call. If you are checking the level make sure that the car is on level ground. Check UTube for how to change the oil and filter etc.

  15. Hi Frances, I have a 2002 XKR. Mine chimes as it goes through the self check on starting. I don't think you can turn it off easily.

  17. Hello Russ, I have just joined so the reply to you post is a bit late! I have an X100, 2002 with about 115000 miles on the clock. I have owned the car for six years and do quite a lot of the repairs myself. The car has not cost a great deal in maintenance other than welding of rust problems and a partial re-spray. Neither of which I can do myself. The car is my only transport and it has been a very practical and serviceable vehicle. When I first purchased the car I had it serviced for a few years at an independent Jag specialist (Surrey Jag in Croydon). I took it to them just after I purchased the car to have it checked out. I have worked overseas a lot at that time and did not have the time to do the work on the car myself. They are quite good and about half the price of the Jaguar dealer. The rust problem was the floor pan front, the rear sill area and part of the rear suspension mounting point. The floor pan rusting problem is caused by two additional plates (about 100mm square) used by Jaguar during assembly. Water gets between the plate and the floor and rots the floor pan. The sill is a double compartment arrangement and rusts out at the very rear near the back wheel arch. Other wise it seems to be OK. The rear suspension is a bit daunting as there are many bushes and mountings that can wear. I replace parts myself as required. I have replaced the disc due to wear, one front track control arm (joint gaiter failed before I purchased the car) several rubber bushes on the suspension, one wheel bearing, the AC evaporator, pasagers door lock complete, head linning (I recovered the existing moulding) and oil cooler (damaged by a kerb and my stupidity). Parts are readily available (new and second hand) on the internet. The only modifications I made are the upper supercharger pulley (well worth doing) some polly bushes on the suspension (not sure about them) and fitting HIDs to the headlights. I looked at remapping the ECU but was advised that it would give about 20 BHP only so I did not do it. The car has been a great drive and is still a real head turner. I have used it to commute from London to Cologne at weekends for several months (great fun on the autoban in the small hours of a Monday morning!!!), a few laps of the Nurburgring :-) and trips to Spain for extende holidays. I have had two breakdowns. I purchased a new key from Jaguar. Within a few weeks the transponder fell out and the car would not start! In fairness Jaguar were excelent. Even though the car was nine years old they refunded the towing charge and the garage costs (Jag independant garage as well). Stratstones, who I bought the key from, were less than helpfull. The other problem was the oil cooler which I hold my hand up for! I intend to keep the car for as long as I can, it is a great drive and still a looker.
