I wouldn't call that a poverty spec. I have the heated windscreen and wouldn't like to be without it, though at the time of purchase it would not have been a deal breaker. Like you, I am puzzled by "less sound system" but, as you say, it obviously must have one. I would welcome the fact that it doesn't have TPMS, which used to give spurious warnings on my XF.

Do post some photos when you pick it up: I shall be interested to see this somewhat mysterious XK!

If it is 2007 it would normally be an X150 XK rather than an XK8. I recommend that you keep the battery fully charged since it is not your daily drive: That way you should avoid problems, which are mostly related to a low state of battery charge. I use a CTEK Battery Conditioner every week on mine.

Hi Ben, Your fuel consumption will improve with warmer weather, and the ticking exhaust is due to the fact that the DPF has been cleaning itself. Having said that, the regeneration of the DPF burns fuel, and often is evidenced by lower than usual mpg, so the figures are a bit surprising. I suggest that you use the Shell V Power diesel (or whatever they call their premium diesel) instead of the regular stuff, because this will keep the engine and DPF much cleaner. My wife uses it in her Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, and has far fewer regenerations than before, plus the car feels quicker, and the mpg is slightly improved.

How old is your battery? What kind of journeys do you do? How far and how often? My first thought is that this may well be due to a low battery charge, though if I am right you still need to find out what is causing it.

Hi Simon, and welcome to the Club! You should still get yourself a CTEK battery conditioner or similar, and use it regularly. Otherwise you are liable to find that your battery is still discharging, albeit not as quickly as before.

The DPF potential issues were the reason why I sold my XF 3.0D S. I didn't have any problems with it, but had retired so was doing more short journies, and just wanted to get rid of the worry that the DPF might cause problems. It has even been known to cause the engine to run out of control at full throttle, due to diesel getting into the oil, which is a truly frightening prospect in a 300bhp vehicle. The only way of stopping it if that happens is to put it in neutral, and let the engine rev itself to destruction. Having said all of this, I suspect that those who worry about their DPF (of whom I was one) are far greater in number than those who have any actual problem with it.

Good as far as it goes, and I suppose that the police would have known immediately if the car had been reported as stolen, but it would be surprising if someone was prepared to hit seven cars in their own vehicle. I suppose that if an old 08 hatchback was already battered they may not care. It could just belong to a friend of the driver, and the owner may claim not to know who was driving it at the time.

Hi Stephen, and welcome to the Club. You need to hook it up to a CTEK (or similar) battery conditioner once a week to keep the battery topped up. No need to remove or disconnect the battery to do this, and you can attach a permanent comfort lead which makes it just a matter of plugging it in. This is what I have done with mine. When moving it in and out of the garage, if it were mine I would drive it for a mile or so to ensure that the rich start up mixture was used and the tickover back to normal before switching off: Otherwise you will be injecting an overrich mixture when you next start it, which can choke the combustion.

I am not an expert on the electrics, but would have thought they may be a problem, and also that it is going to end up costing you more if you do it this way.

Phil, if I were in that situation I would get an independent automotive engineer with appropriate qualifications to do a full report on the car, and then demand that Arun repair the faults identified, making it clear that I would then be returning the car to the same engineer for confirmation that all is now in order. Your Jag specialist may or may not be appropriately qualified. The sort of report that I am thinking about is the kind that would be produced as evidence if the matter ended up in court, and the engineer was called as your Expert Witness. You would probably have to pay for the reports yourself, so this is only worth doing if the faults involve a four figure sum, but it does mean that Arun know that they are going to have to satisfy an expert, so have to do the work properly.

I agree with Philip: If it starts to rev out of control, put it in neutral, pull over, and abandon car! Of course, if you keep the oil level well below maximum, keep an eye on the oil to make sure that the level isn't rising, and get an oil change if it does rise, then this dreadful event should never happen to you....
