After more research and phone calls, I've decided that the difference between these tyre sizes is too risky, not just for driving characteristics, but also for insurance purposes, so I'm just going to sell my old ones and get some new winter tyres to the correct spec.

I have 245x45xR18 tyres on my XF and was wondering if it would be ok for me to fit 225x40xR18 winter tyres. (I have a set of hardly used ones that I had on my Alfa). Many thanks.
