If the rattle sounds metallic then it is likely a worn bush somewhere in the suspension. I wouldn't want to say bad things about MOT testers but in all honesty the fact they didn't spot an issue is a very far thing from there not being an issue. I would get it to a garage and give them a description of what is happening. They will find the issue quite quickly that way.

It is normally just a small bolt or 2 that clamps it to the rear of the main exhaust. Should be a 30 second job.

Hi David I am also looking for an XF currently. What engine you go for really depends on your budget. I was originally looking at Diesels around the £8-10k mark until I realised I could get an XFR for around £13k. That is the way I am going now. Like you I am a petrol head and don't do much mileage so if I get an XFR then I don't need to have a second car for weekends. Its all in one! Not for everyone but worth looking at. There are even a few high mileage XFR's around the £10-11k mark. And its a pretty reliable engine so high mileage shouldn't be too much of a worry as long as it has a good service history (look out for that 105k service, its an expensive one). Or even if you didn't quite want to go that far SV8's (the old 4.2 supercharged V8) is a well proven engine and will save you a couple of grand up front.

Have you tried cleaning the sensor on the front of the car. Would seem like a logical place to start!

From what I have read it shouldn't pass an MOT but often does. Agreed if it works and passes MOT's then great. As long as they are not dazzling to other drivers.

As others have said forums are a skewed version of events because the majority of people are there for advice with issues. If you look at the real world, since around 2006ish at least Jaguar has been in the top 5 manufacturers in reliability studies. Usually missing out to the likes of Lexus. But go on a Lexus forum and you will probably find similar to what you find here. No car is fault free. But the faults always come to the top. Look at the online reviews of your favourite restaurant and you will get an idea. The short story they are pretty damn good compared to most from the research I have done. With regards to the engine choice. The 2 litre turbo petrol is a very new engine to the Jag line up. And doing the short journeys you are doing you probably wont find any major cost differences between that and the more proven V6 engine that has been around for a few more years.

Why not just get some all weather tyres. They are a compromise on both for sure but do you drive the car hard enough to notice in the summer? And in the winter they will be better than summer tyres....

ET is the distance between the mounting surface and the centre line of the wheel. So if they are the same width and a smaller offset then the inside edge of the wheel will move outwards. If the width changes as well then its more complicated. Assuming you have 255 width wheels on there now then the f pace wheels will fit (assuming they are the same fitment). 60 is a very tall profile and on a larger wheel. so your biggest problem will be that your speedo wont be accurate anymore as I'm sure they will have a bigger rolling radius that your standard ones. I.E. you will be travelling faster than your speedo thinks you are. Not only could this incur speeding fines but its likely to confuse your gearbox and ruin your fuel consumption. In short, unless you want to spend a lot of time and money making everything work with the different wheels.... don't bother.

Hi All Joining up as I am on the look out for my first Jag, and I'm going in at the deep end with an XFR. In the past I have always had Japanese cars and heavily modified them (yes I'm "that" guy). Most recently I had a Mitsubishi 3000GT with 550bhp. And since the little one came along I have always had to run a second car for carrying the family. Well now the time comes to replace the daily (a Passat Diesel) with something a bit newer. And after toying with the idea of a BMW 535D for a while I realised that for the same budget I could get an XF 3.0D with similar performance and on average it would be a year newer and have lower mileage. And lets be honest, it looks a million times better. Not long into my search for a daily XF it occured to me that the early SV8 supercharged 4.2 cars were the same money as the diesels. So instead of buying a new Japanese toy as well as a new daily I have decided to combine the efforts into one all rounder. And then again my eyes were opened even wider when I realised that for not much more money I could push up to the XFR. So there I am currently. Waiting for the perfect XFR to come along at the right price. So far everything I have seen in budget has a brown interior...... Not my thing if I'm honest. Certainly not a deal breaker but if I can hold out for something I prefer I will do just that. Look forward to getting stuck in here. Pip
