  1. Sounds like a fault unfortunately, I've never seen a car that has separate dimmer controls just for the instrument panel. I have the MY2010 and it's all done by the one control.
  2. Thanks, could be useful to know.

    Parts

Each to their own, but fi you fitted a proprietory brand like EBC you could always quote it as an upgrade to the original. I doubt that alone would devalue the car when you come to resell.
  4. Agree with John, but as Jim says the TPMS is probably separate so it could be a below-par battery. As you can get a battery test for free there's no harm in doing that first.
  5. Well I'm usually wary about recommending stuff but all I can say is the stuff I mentioned earlier was recommended to me and it worked for me, and my car is 12 years old and apart from a quick so-called valet from the dealer it didn't look as though it had been cleaned since the day it left the showroom. Even if it doesn't work on the buttons, you've got a large bottle of decent interior cleaner for £6 delivered. Surely it's worth a punt?
  6. Seems to be working as it should now, but I reset the seat to memory position 2 then reset it back to 1 and it seems to be fine. Notably though it wasn't set to auto, maybe I've been turning it off rather than on. Had my first 200+ mile driver yesterday, up to the Lake District. First chance to use Dynamic + Sports for any length of time - what a machine this is! The handling is amazing, especially considering the size of the car. I struggle with lower back pain too, and usually spend a couple of days in pain after a longer trip. I'm perfectly fine this morning, slight twinge but nothing more and that's probably from walking around.
  7. Sounds to me as though you're only removing the top surface. If it's years of ground in dirt and skin oils etc. you need a proper deep cleaner.
  8. Kudos, guys. The protection device had indeed tripped. I would probably never thought of that but for this thread.
  9. Hope it works out. Seems an odd failure, I can't help thinking something else must have been involved to cause it but I know how insurance companies can be when it comes to paying out.
  10. I'll check it again when I get back later. Odd that it will adjust when I want it to then, but I'll take another look.
  11. Thanks John, haven't got the car with me so I'll check mine when I get back home in an hour or so.
  12. How did you get on with the insurance Jon?
  13. Agreed. They're actually designed to use that particular battery so that the range isn't too far, as it could interfere with anything else on a similar frequency.
  14. That's interesting - is the prevention device (in the filler pipe) as easy to see as it is on the Land Rover? I've had the same problem - fuel filler cutting off and taking ages to fill the last couple of times I've filled up but couldn't think why. In fact I got to £50 and gave up. I knew about the yellow prevention thing and I have the tool in the boot. In fact I've stuck some Velcro to the tool and stuck it to the side of the battery in case I ever needed it, but as I've never put the wrong nozzle in I dismissed that as being the problem - and I couldn't see anything in the filler pipe. I didn't really look very deeply, only had a glance but I'm sure there was nothing showing, but I could be wrong. It's just occurred to me that I had the filler door hinge replaced a few weeks ago, so it might be that he did something that tripped the safety device when changing the hinge. Thinking about it, the first time I had the problem would have been the first time I've filled it up since the door hinge was replaced.
  15. Any good internal car cleaner should do it. It will only be residue from sweat from hands etc. that's built up over time. Mine was the same when I first got it, I originally thought they had worn and faded but I bought an interior cleaner, cleaned them up and now they look like new. It also worked well on the headlining so it looks like a good all rounder, can't say for sure because I knocked the bottle over after that and the top was loose so I lost most of it, but it was good enough for me to order it again. Just waiting for the new bottle now. This was the stuff I bought: DiamondBrite Car Interior Cleaner Trigger Car Detergent, Rubber Spray Cleaner 696535269250 | eBay
  16. I bought one of these: Dual USB In-Car Charger with LED Display, voltage test, 2 YEAR warranty | eBay They're brilliant especially if you have an older XF with no USBs because they have 2 USB slots built in, and a digital readout that doubles as a battery monitor. It tells you what your battery voltage is before and after starting. Just plugs into the cig lighter power socket. These guys do have a slimmer version too, and other ones that double as an FM transmitter so you can play tunes from your phone over your car stereo. I got one of those too, works really well. I know it doesn't solve the problem but it's a cheap and easy way to get a battery check on your car every time you get in.
  17. Isn't the steering wheel supposed to move forwards and upwards on the XF to aid getting in and out of the car? I've got my steering wheel set quite low so if so, I would have thought it should move up. I know there's a 2-position switch on the steering column and I've tried it in both positions, but it never moves, other than when I adjust it myself. (i.e. it does move electrically when I want to adjust it, but not at any other time, such as to aid entry and exit). Just that our grandson is coming over at the weekend and he hasn't seen the car yet. He loves cars with gadgets, e.g. James Bond or the Batmobile and collects all the models so he'd love it, and I wanted to show him. Apart from that I'm not a big guy so it's not that big a deal, but I can't remember if I've read that it's supposed to have the feature or if I'm just imagining I read it somewhere.
  18. There's a couple of videos on YouTube that show how to do it. This guy from South Africa is a one-man video workshop manual: I tried it but only got mine to open about a foot, but I didn't change the struts as that's good enough for me to open it further and get in without putting my bags down, and I didn't want to risk spraining the springs or hinges.
  19. For the transmission or the DPF? Mine had the DPF amber warning on the day I picked it up and it took 120 motorway miles to clear it, but I've done around 800 miles of mixed driving since and it hasn't come back.
  20. Shouldn't that be the other way around, the lights come on when it's dark? I'm sure the green "lights on" symbol on the dash is lit as soon as the switch is set to auto or one one the time settings (30,60, 90 etc.) We've only had light rain since I got it so I'll have to wait until it rains harder. Found out not to use the screen washer when the driver's window is open! There's no option for the wing mirror lights on the menu as far as I know, so it probably doesn't have them. The lens fitting is there though, and I can't be certain but the one I looked at looks as if it has a bulb in it but I've not seen them come on in the couple of times I've been out after dark. I've bought some of those "dynamic" LED turn signal lights for the mirrors so I'll have a proper look when I come to fit those. Looks like a really decent upgrade - £16 for the pair inc. delivery! Somebody elsewhere asked me for the link so I might as well post it here. Dynamic Turn Signal Light For Jaguar XE XF XJ F TYPE XK XKR I PACE X250 X260 Side Mirror Indicator Lamp Sequential Blinker|Signal Lamp| - AliExpress Note: This is not an affiliate link.
  21. Yes I'm sure they must be. I always thought they were made that way now so that they wouldn't snap off when they took a knock? Maybe it's worth phoning a Jag dealer and ask them.
  22. Yes, that's all they would need to say. Two of the wheels were bad, not so much scuffed but the whole coating looked as though it had been peeled away from parts of the wheel on both nearside wheels. It wasn't until later that I wondered if the wheels had been swapped too because I'm sure I'd have noticed damage that bad having checked the original tyres, and you can't see it in any of the photos. The car was dirty sand needed a good clean when I went to see it, they said it had just come in but I knew that wasn't true because the site I saw it on said it had been listed for around 8 weeks. I took that with a pinch of salt, assumed that's what they probably say to every buyer about every car. My take is that I negotiated new brake discs and pads all round as part of the deal, and my guess is that's when they swapped the wheels over. I know that one of the guys in there wasn't too happy with the deal the salesman had given me because he came after me as we were leaving and said he couldn't include the brakes unless I paid for the parts having just given me £700 or so off the window price. I said no and I didn't have the time to hang around any longer, so he reluctantly agreed. I thought it was a bit of gamesmanship on their part at first, as I'd not signed anything at that point, it was just a verbal agreement. Ultimately it's my fault for not checking before I drove the car away, but having viewed the car you don't expect things to be changed. Anyway it's done, and at least I know I've got decent wheels and tyres on now. I have had it back in for the broken fuel filler door hinge which they have replaced while I waited so at least they look as though they'll honour the warranty even if they do need to be pushed a bit.
  23. I have to say I was thinking exactly the same thing, that does sound like a lot. Always worth asking around as prices and quotes can be miles apart. Mine's an MY 2010 XF with 52000 miles on it, which is why I was asking, just wondered if it's something I needed to keep an eye on but a catastrophic failure like that seems odd.
  24. I've made a notice that I've placed in a plastic sleeve with "DO NOT DISCONNECT BATTERY UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY - PLEASE READ" with notes explaining why not, and stuck it to the top of my battery, because there's no doubt I'll forget if and when it next needs to go in to a garage for something.
  25. This guy on this YT video shows you how to permanently disconnect it on the XE, I don't know if it's the same for the XF but might be worth a watch as if it is, it's a 30 second job to do it.
