Joe Many thanks for above information, which will save me removing the door card. As you will be aware, the backlights only work when main lights are turned on. I am therefore assuming from what you say regarding pulling the fuse, that the backlights on this particular control panel have a separate fuse of their own. If not all other backlights would be extinguished as well as the drivers door control panel lights. I have attempted to trace what/which number fuse is the one that acts on the drivers door backlights but cannot trace any mention of it anywhere. Would you be kind enough to enlighten me as to which fuse number it is and in which fuse box it is located. Thanks , once again, for saving the day. Best Wishes and Regards, John

Christopher I am going to Cornwall the week after next, so I hope you have got your handling problems sorted by then, especially on some of those smaller twisty roads in Cornwall, where I might be coming the opposite way. I will not though be doing "a ton ."😆😉 Best Wishes and Regards, John

Unless, and hopefully you can, someone can tell me otherwise, it looks as though the door panel has to be removed. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s-type-s-type-r-supercharged-v8-x200-15/drivers-door-window-switch-pack-115897/ Would still appreciate an explanation of why this control panel gets warm, even although everything is working well. Carl That would apply to me as well. I am reluctant to invest money in changing the mapping of my S-Type on the grounds of interfering with what was original mapping by Jaguar for the best overall result. When younger and power/performance was the objective with my Nissan SX 200`s and Skylines I was always keen to explore mapping etc. It has to be said though, these CA18`s, RB25`s, SR20`s were a different breed of engine strong Japanese engines that were nowhere near as fickle as the breed of electronic controlled engines of nowadays. Drivers Door Arm Rest Electrical Control Panel: Help required please, as my electrical knowledge is lacking as compared to my mechanical knowledge. Control Panel as indicated (Photo) gets warm - hot for touch. I would not suggest that the plastic panel is untouchable , but it certainly is very warm. This does not happen on short journeys, but only occurs after/on longer journeys (probably after at least 45 - 60 mins). All of the controls are working perfectly and they do not have to be used in order for the heating to occur. My common sense (hopefully) is telling me that this is not normal and that there has to be a reason it is happening/occurring. None of the other door controls suffer the same problem. Suggestions of the reason for this occurring and how to rectify it, would be most welcomed and appreciated. Also appreciated would be knowledge of how this control panel is removed from the arm rest. Is it just gently prised out with a blunt plastic instrument to avoid any marking of the unit and surrounding leather. Or, does it involve removal of the door leather internal panel to access it. I am hoping it will be solved without removal of door panel ........ PLEASE. 😅

Jeff Welcome to the club/forum. Pictures always equal a thousand words, do you possibly have any before and after treatment photos that you can show us? Best Wishes and Regards, John

Mark When my sills were replaced recently the clips cam off easily and were replaced without needing new. As far as I am aware there is not a specific re-commissioning guide of an S-Type. It is a case of making certain everything is is working and in good order. If an engine had not been turned over for several years I personal would make certain the engine will rotate (without actually starting it) and is not seized in any manner, before I even attempted to start the engine. Hydraulic fluids in brake system could well be water saturated and can readily be tested. Tyres could be low on pressure and not having been used they may have cracks appearing in side walls etc etc., due to deterioration. A lot of it is just common sense when dealing with a vehicle that has not been started or used for a few years. Good luck with it when you do actually get around to inspecting the car. Best Wishes and Regards, John

Mark The S-Type can be problematical, as can most Jaguars. I would advise you read through the section reserved for S-Types and gain as much knowledge of them as you can. A lot of problems can stem from battery drain, particularly with S-Types. Even new batteries need regular charging to keep on top of many problem/codes. With the car having been off the road and no more information given about service records, maintenance and usage I would be very careful that oils, levels, gearbox oil/filter replacements have been done. If the car has been stood for three years without being run at all I feel it is safe to say that the battery will need replacing. A battery charger/re-conditioner is an almost essential piece of equipment to keep a S-Type running well. I and most other users on this Forum will use and recommend a CTEK MS 7 or MS 8 as the reliable kit to use. Rust to sills, behind the plastic covers, is a well known problem which cannot always be obvious without removal of plastic covers. Sub frame and mounting are rust/rot can also be another costly problem. If the car has been stood for the three years it would be best to treat as any car you would that had not been used for that time. I.E. Recommissioning procedure/s would be the safest bet. Welcome to the Forum/Club and to the intriguing world of Jaguar ownership. You will always find someone or other on this forum that will have suggested repair to any problem you come across. There are some well versed, helpful and experienced people on this forum. Best Wishes and Regards, John
