One reads so many of these stories with XF`s and XE`s I am surprised that Jaguar have bee successful in selling these models. I would by no means suggest that my S-Type has been 100% perfect but at her age and with 64 K miles she does not seem to cause as many problems. To think I was actually contemplating upgrading to an XF or an XE, but I think I am likely to stick with my S-Type , which I personally feel was the last of the true Jaguar styled models. I am hoping she will see me out, being I am now 72 years young and must surely have a limited time of enjoying driving ahead of me. Good luck and Best Wishes to Everyone. Regards, John

The results from a reader will depend on how good the reader is. Some of the cheaper ones are not so good at finding/diagnosing codes, other than direct engine related matters. This could be a problem that is not directly engine originated.

My S-Type is currently having sills replaced and the whole underside re-undersealed. It was MOT`d one montha go and was not even picked up for rust. Mainly because the plastic sill covers on the S-Types actually hide the metal sills and they cannot be seen without removing the plastcc covers. That is a real easy job, but MOT inspectors cannot do it because they would have to replace them as well. I had my sill covers removed purposely so as I knew what the score was. I am in a very lucky position, my son in law is Sales Manager at a Main Dealer and they do all of my work. As has been quoted before, "It is not always what you know, but who you know." Good for getting the attention you need, when you need it and also benefits from family rates. Best Wishes when you take the sills off and have a look. Regards, John

Roisin Sounds serious and if it is a loud haeavy sounding knock is probably "Big End Trouble". Will be expensive to repair. I imagine your choices are: 1/ Have the engine repaired........... probably not a good financial action. 2/ Buy a good secondhand engine and have it fitted .......... again probably a dear financial action. 3/ Advertise the car, outlining the fault and hope to get a reasonable offer from someone who has or can acquire a replacement engine. Again not going to be a financial success I would think. Sometimes your first loss is your best loss. I am assuming this car has no sort of warranty or guarantee that you could try claiming on. Mick Nothing surprises me these days. I am 72 years of age and have realised that the days on communication/customer service/decency and honesty have long gone. As long as an order has been signed and a deposit made, that is all they are interested in. Admittedly not everywhere is the same story found, but I see it as an ever increasing number. Trevor Everyone I have contacted has for sale some "Heat Resistant Tape". However nobody is prepared to quote an upper limit of degrees to which tape can with stand the enclosed environment of an engine bay. My son in law has today solved the problem. He is a=the Sales Manager at a main agent and their technicians have a silicone gel that they recommend and use for this exact job. My S-Type is with them this week having new sills fitted and they are going to do the under bonnet job with the insulation whilst the car is with them. Brian I find that interesting, being from the "Dinosaur Age" and never having been involved with optic technology in vehicles. Having thought about it I can well understand the logic of what you say, in as much as if you have a break/gap in the optical process/route then it plainly will not work. Delia That looks a nice car. Could I suggest that you put a few more details on the listing to aid the potential selling of the car. E.G. Engine Size: 2.5, 3.0, 4.0 etc. Fuel: Petrol or Diesel, Service History: when/what/where and whether there is supporting documents to prove. Best Wishes with your selling. Regards, John
