  2. My other car has developed an ABS fault at the moment, it's still perfectly legal to drive but won't pass the MoT as it is unless i jerry-rig the ABS light to the SRS light. Alternatively i could just fix the problem but that might be easier said than done given it won't let me read the codes. Sort of suggest the ABS ECU is belly-up but that's for another forum maybe. Likewise there is (or at least wasn't last time i checked) nothing in the C&U about the light source - the moving traffic offence would be dazzling oncoming motorists if the LED bulbs gave an incorrect beam pattern but having them fitted isn't illegal. They won't pass the MoT because of a govt knee-jerk reaction to the mass influx of cheap Chinese LED headlamp bulbs that simply have a large COB LED that gives no definite point of light source, just a huge blob of light that gets refelected all round the refelctor including in the areas where there shouldn't be any light. Most MoT testers tend to turn a blind eye to LED headlamp bulbs as long as the beam pattern is correct knowing full well that if they insist on filament bulbs being present for a pass, i'll simply swap them back after the pass certificate is given, as would most other people. I would guess their mindset is they'd rather test it as being safe with the bulbs they know i'll be using than force me to fit filament bulbs knowing i'll change them immediately after getting a new test and potentially alter the alignment while fitting them. Shouldn't happen but it does, especially with minor varaiations in bulbs, hence the need for a beam alignment check after renewing headlamp bulbs even with incandescent filament bulbs.

  6. Care to elaborate? Hmmmm, back in February, DVSA updated things and basically said as long as the beam pattern was correct, it was fine. However, a couple of months later, this was changed again - now so few people know where they stand on this, most of the time as long as the beam pattern is ok then it's all good. I wonder how i would get on with an obviously incorrect beam pattern using halgen filament bulbs but a correct beam pattern using LED bulbs in the same headlamps?
  7. Probably but 2016 is only a year behind 2015 in terms of ageing and fading. Why not just revive your existing headlamps using T-Cut or one of the headlamp renovation kits available online? Would be cheper and much less grief in the long run and you won't need to come back next year and ask if 2017 headlamps will fit a 2015 car and so on. 😉 😄

Holy thread resurrection Batman! 😛 I finally was able to test the LED headlamp bulbs i bought at the end of May (when the updated version of the others i linked to finally became available) last friday night and can confirm they are a vast improvement over the standard halogen filament bulbs! Halogen (Xenon look ebay jobs) - note the light scatter onto the wrong side of the road! 😮 Same place with the LED bulbs, improved range and much less light scatter onto the wrong side of the road! 😄 Actually driving with them is a vast improvement, much better, more defined dipped beam pattern and less bleaching plus a longer range change the whole feel of the car after dark. For those intersted in the technicalities, the LEDs used on these bulbs mimic the original filament size and shape so the original beam pattern is enhanced/sharpened and no unwanted light escapes to the wrong place, concentrating the usable light where you want it. Now deciding whether to to get the HB3 LEDs for the inner main beams............

You can't be far from me in that case and my straw poll of uncorrected right hand dip (for left hand drive cars) lights is nearer 8 out of 10 on US spec cars. 😮 However, in around February this year, there was an update to the MoT regs allowing post 1986 models to retrofit LEDs as long as the beam pattern remained correct - generally a problem with cheap Chinese LED conversions. I recently converted my S Type to LED dipped beams using some slightly more expensive LEDs from a reputable UK supplier and the difference (no pun intended) is night and day! Much better lighting along the road, no light coming out where it shouldn't (i temporarily forget the correct name for this) and a better beam pattern overall. However, there was a more recent update to the MoT regs that seemed to contradict the February update - as such i'll keep the tungsten filament bulbs in case the MoT guy gets fussy on mine but i'll then expect a fail for poor beam pattern! With filament bulbs ^^^^^ note the light scatter onto the wrong side of the road and short range of light! Same place with the LED bulbs instead ^^^^^ note the improved range and less light scatter onto the wrong side of the road! To sum up, i totally agree with your sentiments but if done properly with decent LED bulbs, they can give a vast improvement to safety, not only for the driver but oncoming vehicles too.

  11. You presume correctly, i was replying to you and it is indeed a mystery as to where your post has gone - maybe a moderator has hidden it? I get what you're saying about the turbo putting the ECU into Limp Mode and causing the gearbox MIL to light now, i havae similar on my Honda at the moment due to some idiot topping the box with DW-1 instead of the correct fluid. Generally i get 22-32mpg out of my S Type but that is on LPG so only 80p/L - equivalent to 40-60mpg roughly in terms of cost. As for life expectancy, my last petrol car was sold with 238k on the clock from new and still giving good performance, economy, power and not using any fluids. Traded that one against my Honda (142k from new and likely to do double that easily) although thanks to the aforementioned ATF problem, that's only doing ~16mpg or 10mpg less than the V6 Volvo with 238k did! Either way the OP still hasn't responded to my first response about the ATF and codes.............
