  1. It was a complicated reply, Jim, and quite unnecessary, and had you read the post and the earlier one you would not have posted its content at all. I thought it was a post that was posted just for the sake of posting, which is something that the Rules advise should not be done., It might have sent a member in the wrong direction which is why I disagreed. I could have deleted it as spam, but I do not over moderate. Peter.
  2. Pigeon racing is a very interesting sport, Walter. Tell us more sometime! I was born and brought up in an area where there were real country sports that did not harm animals. There use to be dozens of men with Pigeon Baskets on the bak of their bikes riding 20 miles away to race their pigeons, and there was whippet racing alongside the wall that kept us kids off the railway. I friend of mine use to race pigeons, but never won a thing, till one Sunday evening, when someone came into the village pub to tell him he had seen his bird come home about half an hour ago. When the result came in he was fourth beaten by three other birds by just a few minutes! Demon Drink!! Peter.
  3. Which post are you referring to please, Damon?
  4. Hi Damon, When I was young I did a 36 week night school course on car maintenance. I learned how to de-coke a car engine, how to replace brake drums and shoes, the innermost working of Carburettors, chaining spark plugs and points, repairing a distributor, and more or less all of the electrical bits -- not many then --. I serviced our cars until company cars came along, & although I still serviced my wife car for years the changes in technology meant either a very complicated apprenticeship or paying a good mechanic to do it for you. I check the fluids, and things like air filters, but all these sensors are something different, so I leave it to the experts. Regards, Peter.
  5. Hi John, and welcome to the club. When I bought my S Type from a main dealer, I took it back after 2 months with a list a niggles. It had been owned by the main dealer but had sat in a garage for three months. They fixed all the niggles and almost three years later I have never had a problem that needed the attention of a mechanic. The should fix the rust issue. I did think, though, that the XJ was an all aluminium build, so rust should not exist. Let us know what they say. Regards, Peter.
  6. Hi Neal, Getting a good relationship with a dealer or a garage is a good thing to do. When I was working and had a company car, getting to know the service manager and his mechanics got me quite a few favours -- on one occasion they valeted my car when it went in for a service, and on another occasion they steam cleaned the engine -- no change for either! Regards, Peter.
  7. Good post, David! My insurance is over £500 -- full no claims and no claim bonus protected. No accident and a clean licence plus a dash cam which gives me a 12.5% reduction in the premium. The West midlands is an expensive place to get insurance. Peter.
  8. Hi James, There are some good dealers in the West Midlands. You don't need to go too far to view a good car and to me Clitheroe is a long way away. It does look like a good car, and it might be worth a look at. The price is not unreasonable either. Evans Halshaw is a dealer that belongs to a big chain and will bring you a car that you like to one of their dealers near you, Regards, Peter.
  9. Hi Dave, Paul does not blow his own trumpet, but he is a top class electrical expert. A suitable one could be found to do the job. Regards, Peter.
  10. Hi David, Make sure your radio is switched on and then go to your settings and look at volume presets, and then adjust. It ir usually that when mine get lost.
  11. Hi Tim, I think your key fob is OK. Don't bother changing it. I have just learned something about pressing it down a bit longer. Mine is just like yours and the batteries do last a long time. Regards Peter.
  12. Hi David, The battery will have been changed -- my 2007 plate was changed in 2012. It is easy to get your batter condition checked - but I guess it will be probably OK. I was thinking of one of those solar chargers, but being retired I can plug in my charger every now and then. Frank and Paul have offered very good advice. Regards, Peter.
  13. Hi David, and welcome to the club. Your XJ looks great. I like the leather seats -- the same as my s type. I hope you enjoy the club as much as you enjoy your car. Regards, Peter.
  14. Hi Andrew, In 1986 I had a Austin Maestro 1.6 with rust on drivers door when delivered. A very quick little car. I had been playing Golf at Whitby Golf course and had to drive back with my golfing partner. Behind us was another member of our club and in a 2.0 litre Austin something or other who trie d to overtake me on the twisty roads. As I often visited my sister who live close to the golf course I knew that road and every bend well, and he couldn't get anywhere near me. Over Malton and Pickering ne tried and couldn't get anywhere near, but on the duel carriageway when I was doing a clever 70 mph he passed me like a rocket right though the Radar trap that was always there. As you say, Happy days. Regards, Peter.
  15. Hi James and welcome to the club. Don't worry about the horror stories about diesels. Buy your car from an established dealer, and with a warranty if you can. I had a rather good X type 2.5 petrol and it was a great car. Just make sure that the car is clean and straight and has a reasonable service history. Have a test drive and if it feels cared for, then it is the one for you. Regards, Peter.
  16. HI Steve, I am uncertain what the tickover revs should be on a 3.0 lite petrol. On my diesel it is 750 rpm when fully warm Check without the s button on and see if it drops. Nowadays there is no car without an automatic choke, a pity in a way, as you can't check visually when the choke is out or in. Regards, Peter.
  17. Every club has rules which are there to ensure that all matters are conducted in a friendly and positive way. The Jaguar Owners Club has rules which are rarely infringed, which demonstrates how good the membership is. I have read the rules of other clubs whose rules are more stringent, and I will quote from one:- "The Administrators of this forum reserve the right to add to/delete or modify any of the forum rules at any time, they further reserve the right to add to/delete or edit any member's posts to reflect those rules. We don't like to do this, but sometimes a little discipline is needed" The JOC rules could be summarised as follows:- Do not post copyright material. Do not post for the same posting or to increase your post count. Don't post anything that breaks the law or encourage others to do so. Do not posts anything that even hints of advertising. [Promoting something which will give you or any other body with which you are involved pecuniary advantage or similar is an example] Members must ensure your post is useful. The Moderators may decide what is acceptable at its absolute discretion. Any form of hostility to a member of the moderating team will result in a permanent ban. Anyone whose post has been deleted should realise that a rule has been infringed of deemed so. Regards, Peter.
  18. Hi Neal, Jim has given you a very complicated answer, which I disagree with. Your car is under warranty and only recently came from the dealers, where it would have been serviced. Just take it round to the dealer, tell him the issues and see what he says. Ii is much easier than spending half a day with oily hands to solve a minor issue. After all, it is better to enjoy your car from the driver's seat than spending hours doing unnecessary work on it. Regards, Peter.
  19. Hi Stuart, I doubt that it is the original battery, but as I said, it is worth checking the condition of it. And as S Type driver with the battery in the boot, you could also check the terminal connection which sometimes get disturbed. Regards, Peter.
  20. Hi Neal, That is not a bad mpg for a round trip but with stopping and starting as well. A sticky EGR valve is probably not the issue, as a good blast often cures it, But for under a Tenner you can squirt in a can of Wynns EGR Cleaner. A slight lag on takeup could be fuel related, and it could be the injectors need cleaning a bit.Again Wynns have an additive. I take it that there was no warning lights on the dashboard, so it is probably not serious, but as it is under warranty a pop round to your dealer would todo no harm. Lets us know how it goes. Regards, Peter.
  21. I see a bit of deja vu
  22. There is currently a legal case concerning copyright material running in the USA. Apparently a Legal Firm is examining certain areas in which copyright can be infringed -- I think it is concerning posts on Facebook, where they look at items that could belong to someone else and volunteer and to sue the person who is infringing the owner's copyright The club rules do mention the danger in posting copyright material, which is easily and inadvertently done. To avoid this any post containing a quote should have an acknowledgement of the source. Putting a link to a website does not infringe the copyright, and is perfectly OK. Peter.
  23. I worked in Wales for some years and lived in North Wales for a fair time, Andrew. I know Snowdonia quite well - fantastic mountains and Lakes. Hope the op goes well -- as well as the house move. Regards, Peter.
  24. Hi Trevor, and welcome to the club. You have checked the things I would have checked. Maybe fuel? Maybe something mechanical. I am not a mechanic, and someone with more expertise will be able to help. Regards, Peter.
  25. Hi Andrew, There are quite a few members in your area. One of the members in Wales tried to organise a meet last year but there was not enough interest. Maybe this year? Regards, Peter.
