  1. Welcome to the Club, Nick. The Auto gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life, but many members have had a gearbox service --- fluid and filter change, and it has benefitted the car immensely. There are good transmission experts all over the UK and the ZF gearbox is one of the most common automatic gearboxes in the country, and probably Europe. If you were tp do the job yourself, it would probably cost less than £200. My S type has done 65k miles and I will be having that job done in 18 months. Regards, Peter.
  2. Does the message centre - contained within the tachometer dial - have messages such as "passenger door open" etc. It will say "Gearbox Fault" if there is something wrong with the gearbox. Peter
  3. Is there any message in the message centre? There usually is if there is a gearbox problem. If there is a bump in a tyre you can usually feel it in the steering if it is in the front. You can also trust a visual inspection of a tyre on the outer side and by feeling it on the inner side. Peter.
  4. Welcome to the club, Mark. Some good advice already. There has also been a post fro Jagbreaker about S type parts ,who is based in Lancashire who should be worth a call. Regards Peter.
  5. Welcome to the cub, David. You certainly gave your car a good road test! The S Type is a great car to drive, and is still a hear turner. I have one of the last produced, a bit slower than your, but still very quick & when you put your foot down the twin turbo diesel shows amazing acceleration. Regards, Peter.
  6. Hi Scott, My son has just bought an 06 X type estate, and found that Bluetooth is an optional extra. Luckily his car has bluetooth! The diesel engine does take a little longer than petrol engine to warm up - about 10 miles or so. There was a survey early this year on tyres, and the two at the top of the list meeting the requirements of noise, wear and stopping in the wet were Goodyear Eagle and Vredestein. Having said that there are other tyres also recommended by club members, Nexen being one of them, and Goodride another. The engine will have a "rumble" - it is a low revving diesel. I used to have a Rover 418 with the Peugeot diesel engine, which used to sound like a Massey Ferguson on start up and until the revs got past 1200 rpm. Regards, Peter.
  7. Hi Joel, and welcome to the club. The s type is a great car to drive, and a real head turner. There are plenty of very friendly and savvy members in the club who will give you some great advice. Regards, Peter.
  8. Hi Paul and welcome to the club. An auto electrician might be the person to see, but I would go back to the dealer who supplied the circuit board. Let us know how you get on. Regards, Peter.
  9. Hi Shaun, Jaguar advise that oil should be 5W - 30 viscosity should be used, and recommends Castrol. Castro Magnatec is supposed to last 20k, and there are also oils of similar quality from other suppliers. -- Esso, shell etc. It is worth having a look at Opie Oils website. They are a major online supplier and will also give you a good price. Regards, Peter.
  10. Hi Amal, Andy is quite right and also I can stress a certain element of urgency in getting the tyre pressures correct. In the sixty odd years I have been on the road in one type of vehicle or another I have seen massive changes from the days when car heaters were an option extra, and windscreen wipers only had one speed. There is one thing that has never changed since the pneumatic tyre was invented about 130 years ago, and that is the the pressures you should have. You have a two ton car that is capable of over 100 mph and which the only connection between you and the road is some rubber and some air, with the latter being one of the cheapest things you can get. The type pressures are to be found both in your handbook, as Andy has said, but also on the door pillar on the driver's side. A tyre pressure gauge costs about a tenner, and I carry one all the time in the title storage box in the armrest. I also carry a tread gauge, and in the boot there is something I never drive without - a tyre inflator. When I was a cyclist I never went out without a bicycle Pump, and my first car always had a foot pump in the boot. Spending a few shillings on the modern electric version is well worth while, as is a tyre check at lest once a month. They used to say before they invented antifreeze and suchlike modern things, that a car was like a human being -- to survive it needed air and water! Regards, Peter.
  11. Also have a look at the headlights and see if they need a good clean. Peter.
  12. Welcome to the Club, Chris. The satnav problem sounds very like a poor connection. Start the easy way, and look at the fuse. Regards, Peter.
  13. It is a good read, Geoff.
  14. I didn't find any issues with Supermarket fuel, or indeed with standard 95Ron. I just found that running on Shell V Power gave me better fuel consumption, as well as a good smooth ride. Peter.
  15. Hi Graham, and welcome to the club. That does sound an awful lot of money. I wish you well with Jaguar. Regards, Peter.
  16. Hi Keith, I don't know how much the MAF sensors cost but the EGR valves cost about £200 each. I know that they look a bit tricky to get out. Regards Peter.
  17. My son wanted to connect his iPod to his X Type which has Bluetooth. A check with Paul -- who knows all about these technical matters -- indicated that it was quote possible with an Audio Control Module. The only problem is that they cost about £300. The Breakers Yard is the best solution if you really need it. My son is now looking to get a CD interchanger, Peter.
  18. Hi Nigel, I hope it gets sorted out for you and the worst scenario does not happen. I know the feeling as it happened to me once --- but the saving grace was that it was a company car! Good Luck, Peter.
  19. Hi Keith, For big jobs Carl likes to take your car to his premises because he likes to start and finish a job uninterrupted. Smaller jobs [changing an exhaust etc] he will do on your drive. 07866 986243 is his mobile number. Mention my name so he will know where the contact came from. Regards, Peter
  20. HI Keith, Last year a Jaguar main dealer in Coventry had a special offer for this job. It might be worth getting a quote from a Main Dealer, and another from Northfield Garage' I have used for the last 12 years a mobile mechanic who operated around the Sutton Coldfield and North Birmingham area and he did the cam belts on my Rover 2.5 V6 about 5 years ago. I will be using him in 40k miles! He also does all my servicing. Regards, Peter.
  21. Hi Robert and welcome to the club. There are quite a few small issues that can be caused by a low battery. Keith is quite right in suggesting you go along the easiest and probably the cheapest route. Regards, Peter.
  22. Hi Sal, Without hearing the sound it is hard to say, but I think it could be the rumble of the big diesel engine which disappears as it picks up speed. Regards, Peter.
  23. Hi Scott and welcome to the club. My son has just bought an 06 X Type with 91k on the clock and the 2.0 diesel engine. I don't know if the car will need a cam belt/chain replacement, but at a guess I would say you have got about 60k before you will. I did a bit of research and find that most drivers like the 2.0 litre diesel for its economy and the fact that it is a well proven engine [Ford Duratorq]. I think it also meets the EU4 emissions requirement without needing a DPF filter. My son says that it does not use fuel at all, but I think he exaggerates. I think you have a good buy and you will enjoy the Jaguar experience. Regards, Peter.
  24. Hi HArmz, I think that there is an Independent garage in Northfield - listed in the Jaguar owners lounge who are very well respected. Regards, Peter.
  25. Hi Colin, The S Type only has the "S" button which I don't use that frequently The statistics do tell us that under the same conditions a manual gearbox is slightly more frugal than an automatic. Peter.
