  1. Sounds a bit like some WD40, Paul, and some inspiration. But when I am told something is impossible, I am inclined to think harder. Peter.
  2. Are they self tapping screws, Paul, as the only thing I could think of is trying to clamp one end. How many are there? Peter.
  3. Hi Paul, Willing to assist. Wednesday not good. Any other day OK. Peter.
  4. Hi Paul, Being polite costa nothing, and I also wonder where it has gone. One of the big problems is that many people use the anonymity of the internet to be nasty when they would not have the courage to do so face to face. I too appreciate that the JOC is a friendly club with tolerant moderators. Regards, Peter.
  5. It is a classic, Ralph. There is lady member in Lincoln who has a white one, and recently saw a similar car in black in the city. It is unfairly compared with the e type. It takes a long time in the UK for people to regards cars as classics! Peter.
  6. I have just had the engine warning light on, but my OBD2 reader would only scan KWP2000. I gave up, and guessed it was Code P0402 and with brick on the accelerator pedal to keep it between 1100 and 1500 rpm I sprayed Wynns EGR cleaner into the air intake. Then a 10 mile drive to get the stuff working. Light gone. But I ask why the reader didn't throw up a code. Peter.
  7. Quite so, Andy. i researched this before I bought my 2.7 Diesel. Petr.
  8. Welcome to the club, Lui. The S Type 3.0 litre auto is a model beloved by drivers in the USA, and a lot of them went there. I saw one in Phoenix, Arizona some years ago. Good solid engine! I hope you put some photos on then the work is done. 16" wheels are a bit small [imo] for the s type. Regards Peter.
  9. Over the last two years many members have given some great answers to questions posed. Being a nitpicker by profession, I have copied all these posts for future reference, and one day I will put them all together, possibly bind them and put with the Owners' Manual. A couple of days ago I had the message centre tell me that my car was due for service in 850 miles, and then 1100 miles, and then back to 850 miles. The message goes off quite quickly. I looked through all my papers, and found the one that resets the message centre. You need two hands on the right side of your body, and the process has to be done within 3 seconds, but at the third go the lovely message came up that it was resetting, and then the message that the message centre had been reset. Job done! Peter.
  10. Hi Ralph, There are plenty of inexpensive S Types around, and quite a few with the 2.5 V6 engine which is the engine also used in the X Type, and is rather a good engine and not as thirsty as the 3.0 litre. Manual S Types are not too plentiful, but can be found, and if you can get one with a straight body and rust free sills, an owner with you skills can do the work on it to keep it going. Regards, Peter.
  11. Hi Chris, The ZF gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life, but many owners of cars with this gearbox have had the oil changed at around 75k. I do not know what causes the humming noise, as it could be a minor vibration from somewhere. Regards, Peter.
  12. Hi Paul, I think you are probably right about the DPF regeneration. My engine got quite hot on Tuesday but it was the first long run for about three weeks. It does need to be quite hot to burn off the soot. Regards, Peter.
  13. Hi Ralph, and welcome to the club. The s type is a great car, comfortable, stylish and quite quick in all versions. I come from the era of adjustable spanners and lump hammers, and don't get oily hands any more. But I do have a good mechanic! A late model S type - I have a 2.7 Diesel on an 07 plate - is a good buy and better still with a low mileage. The diesel has a cam belt which should be changed at 105k. There are quite a few members with a lot of knowledge of these modern cars and will give you some very good advice. Regards, Peter.
  14. Hi Greg, That car does look like a good buy. We had the same dilemma when our X type was stolen -- carjacked. We needed a car to get around, and I had a wish list of what i wanted on an S Type, but the only one I could find advertised had 75k on the clock, £7500, and was in Dumfries. I put out a request for what I wanted and got a 'phone call from Stratstone saying they had one fitting my requirements in Solihull for £10,250. I said that it was outside our budget, but we decided to have a look after a few days of thought, and when SWMBO saw it and sat in the driver's seat our budget was revised and we got it for £9750. It has been a brilliant car. Regards, Peter.
  15. Hi Kenneth, I think you will need the keys reprogramming. There are some auto electrician/locksmiths who will do it cheaper than a main dealer if you can find on indoor area. On the question of the climate control, there cold be a faulty pipe or as you say, a sensor. Regards, Peter.
  16. Hi Graham, I have the same issue with the steering wheel! I think the computer wants to keep us on our toes! Peter.
  17. Welcome to the club, Greg. When I bought my S type 2.7D just over two years ago, I had done a significant amount of research on the model. I managed to find one fairly quickly - a late model with a low mileage, which is what to look for. I would also recommend trying to get one through a main dealer, and even though the last ones were produced 8 years ago thee are still some good sources who will protect their reputation as a main dealer to make sure the car they sell is a good one. Not many people know that Stratstone Jaguar - a pretty big chain of dealers - has a partner in Evans Halshaw to who they send the cars they do not want on their forecourt. Worth knowing, as they will bring the car you want from wherever in the country it is located. In the two years I have had the car, the biggest cost I have had is two new front tyres. Servicing is important, and I use a mobile mechanic who I have used for years and his labour charges are tiny compared with main dealers. You do not need to go to a main dealer. In Doncaster there is a very well thought of Independent Jaguar specialist, whose address you will find in the Jaguar Owners Lounge, where there is a list of recommended garages. The 2.7 Diesel engine is a very good one designed as a joint venture between Peugeot and Ford and was put into the early XF models. The think to watch out for is that it has cam belts rather than chains and they need renewal at 105k miles. It also needs a good run and the occasional blast to make sure the DPF is regenerated. Another thing to look out for when buying a Jaguar is to make sure that they have as many bells on whistles fitted. I am sure that other s type owners will pass on their experiences, too. I thoroughly enjoy my car, the best car I have ever driven. Good Hunting, Peter.
  18. Welcome to the club, David. The CD changer in the boot seems to have some common problems. Luckily, mine works OK. There are several members with more electrical expertise that myself, and I am certain some good advice will soon be here. Regards, Peter.
  19. Hi Ralph and welcome to the Club. Thee are quite a few XJS owners in the club who cherish these great cars. Some people compare them to the E Type, but they shouldn't as they are two different cars. You car looks great and I hope that it keeps the promises. Regards, Peter.
  20. Hi Steve, I am surprised that there is not a key entry into the boot. There certainly is on mine. Post facelift, though. Have you checked underneath the chrome finish on the boot at the left hand side? Other than that it is possible to get through to the boot via the drop down armrest. Peter.
  21. My drive slopes slightly from left to right, and the boot used to let a small amount of water in. A ball of kitchen tissue near the battery showed how much water was getting in. It was eventually cured just by making sure the seals were ok and making them a little more supple.
  22. Hi Mannix, Plenty of local places such as Auto Accessory shops, Halfords Auto Centres etc will check a battery, usually free. Simple job. I would like to bet that some members have the gadget needed. Peter.
  23. I don't think it would make any difference, Mark, unless they are sports boxes. Peter.
  24. Hi Steve, I do not know the X Type boot lid, but the S type has a key entry system that is very useful in such circumstance But assuming you have a saloon, look under the chrome strip with the Jaguar name on and you will see a key slot, to the left which will open the boot. If the x type is the same as the s type you will get in. Let me know how you get on. Regards, Peter
  25. Hi Peter, My car is a diesel and I was recommended to use Premium fuel, and as the local petrol station is quite cheap and close I don't use supermarket fuel and put in usually a tankful of the expensive one every month or so - every other tankful. Some users of supermarket fuel put in an additive, but that increases the cost, anyway. On the battery issue, Jaguars do like a nice big battery and when it starts to fail the less important things switch themselves off to conserve power. In my s type I have a Varta 95 amp hour, and I would expect the XJ to be no less. A fairly basic model is quite open to retro fitting, and although I am no engineer, Raistlin [Paul] is very expert and will advise on the topic of retro fitting. Let us know how the car goes on Saturday. Peter.
