  1. Hi Gary, I forgot to mention the topic "blessing or curse". There are quite a few drivers who prefer the manual gearbox. As I said before, there are no exact statistics that I could find, but certainly there are not many 2.7D with the manual gearbox, as the ZF 6 speed auto box is very suited to the big diesel. I have no problems at all with driving a manual -- my 2.5 AWD petrol X Type had a manual 5 speed gearbox -- but getting a bit older and being used to automatics since I retired, I looked for an s type with an automatic gearbox, and after about three weeks searching I found what I wanted, and never came across an S type diesel with a manual gearbox. There is a market for "stick" driving and I am fairly certain that if your are happy with a manual gearbox, the rarity element will be an asset when selling the car. And one smaller little bit you should need to know is that the second turbo kicks in at 2,000 rpm and if you want to drive quickly a manual gearbox can keep both turbos spinning easier than an auto, and will still let you drive economically. Regards, Peter.
  2. Welcome to the club, Gary. There were about 330k s type made with about half of them exported, mostly to the USA. I don't know exactly how many were made with the manual gearbox, but I would hazard a guess and suggest no more than about 5,000. Regards, Peter.
  3. I would still have that car as it was in prime condition, Phil. The two scroats who car jacked it got 8 years in a place where they could never drive it. It was never recovered and the police thought it went abroad. Peter.
  4. Hi Phil, However, I have just tried to edit my post and to add a picture and added this now of my x type being polished by Grand daughter. Curious. I just went into My media, went into attachments, and then search and lo and behold. More curious, Peter.
  5. Hi Phil, I think it must be a site problem, as I can send photos everywhere else. Peter.
  6. Interesting, Phil. I am getting exactly the same problem, and I can't solve it. Let me know if you can. Peter.
  7. Hi David, It does sound as if there is a bad GPS signal or that a signal is not being received properly. You might need to locate the receptor to check it out. Regards, Peter.
  8. Hi Pieter, I would follow the route of a replacement coil pack. As far as the sills are concerned they can be replaced. I did that on an A40 in 1968 --- I had the sills made to size and pop riveted them on myself. _----- I did work in a steelworks then. Whatever you do, don't scrap the car. The car will be worth more money if repaired as there are only a few on the road and you will recoup any expenditure. Regards, Peter.
  9. Hi Dennis, I would check that the alternator is charging the battery first. I don't think it can be the battery. Ir is a pity that they don't have the old style dial on the dashboard anymore. Regards, Peter.
  10. Just straight in to the air intake, John. If you have someone keeping the revs circa 1200 rpm steady you will hear the engine start increasing in revs momentarily from time to time. Peter.
  11. I only have Apple products computerwise, after several failed Windows operations. The desktop is 15 years old and cannot take any more upgrades, and one 16 year old laptop is not worth getting new batteries for. A couple of years ago I got a new macbook pro which is brilliant! Peter.
  12. Hi Ron, Great news! West Midlands meet --- Opie Oils have kindly given us some excellent sponsorship for the meet on the 19the September at Gaydon. When we know what other sponsorship we have, Paul and myself will meet up to see if we can work out how prizes can be distributed. Regards, Peter.
  13. Welcome to the club, Garry. The s type is a nice car to drive, both gracefully and quickly. I think it is a future classic. Enjoy the experience. Regards, Peter.
  14. Hi John, Get the engine to its normal running temperature, and then take out the air filter. You will then see the air intake. Spray into the air intake, while you have someone with their foot on the accelerator to keep the revs at 1200 rmph. Spray in bursts with three or four good squirts a minute till the can is used up. There is also some Wynns engine cleaner which is an additive to be used about every 3000 miles. Also use the best premium fuel. Regards, Peter.
  15. Hi David, I had the same problem on an X type. Harvey is quite right. I paid someone £35 to do what he said!!. Regards Peter.
  16. Hi Pieter and welcome to the club, You have done the things I would have suggested, so I would guess the problem needs some electrical expertise. Hopefully some expertise will soon be forthcoming. Regards, Peter.
  17. Hi Robin, My battery has a vent pipe, and it is pushed through the grommet on the rear bumper. Gases will vent outside. Paul provides some useful information. I come from an era of the dynamo and a battery that you topped up every week or so which powered nothing more than the starter motor. They have come along a lot since then, and will continue to do so. Regards Peter.
  18. Welcome to the club, Lance. Kenny has given you a very good lead. Regards, Peter.
  19. Hi Andrew and welcome to the Club. Like Kenny, I have had to find my way round the UK without these electronic aids and do know lots of towns. However, I find Doris [my Satnav] quite good. I think a lot depends on which of the screen choices you use. She got me through the centre of Dublin recently and and across the country --- and Ireland does not have postcodes yet. Regards, Peter.
  20. Welcome to the club, David. Those wheels look rather good. I hope some one would like them on his car. Regards, Peter.
  21. The engine in my s type was changed at 21k after oil pump failure as i was Told when I bought it. But I have heard that when the DPF is being regenerated fuel oil is sent there to help and it can get into the engine oil is unburnt. Peter.
  22. I think Frank could have hit the nail on the head, Mark. I used to have a Rover Sterling with the 2.5 V6 petrol engine and I found it was losing power after about 20 minutes driving. My mechanic could not find the problem until I gave him my car to take home and give it a longer test. Luckily it lost power after 8 miles as he was turning into his road. The coil pack had a faulty coil. Peter.
  23. Welcome to the club, Ryan. Nice car, and nice to see a model of that year getting some TLC. You will get some help from other members, and you will also give some help with your experience to others. Regards, Peter.
  24. Sounds a bit like something loose, Graham. I would check out the exhaust. Peter.
  25. Hi Mark and welcome to the club. I am not an engineer, but at a quick guess it sounds a bit like fuel supply. Others with more expertise will be able to assist. Regards, Peter.
