I drove up to Ripley today, an 80 miles round trip, no motorways and heavy rain most of the way there and half of the way back. 42 mpg exactly. Quite pleased. Peter.

Hi Phil, Just google Sat Nav Updates and you will find quite a few companies/people selling them. I had the 2006 version on my car and found an update for £29 [2012/13] that works well. Welcome to the Club, Matt. The S Type [it could well haven the Jaguar Mk3] is a great car, and as a guy said to me in Sainsbury's car park You car looks like a real Jaguar as I used to know them". That is one of the mysteries of the production line, John. An uncle of mine worked at Ford in Halewood, and on one occasion we both had the same model of Ford Escort, the 1.3L. However, his 1.3L had a 1.6 engine, the same seats as a Ghia , with a fitted radio and very posh carpets. I guess that when the car was being built a stray wiring loom found a place close to the production line and curiously got fitted to your car, and the chap on the line got rid of the one that should have got on to your car. Another curious coincidence could have been that his car was in need of a new wiring loom. Smacks a bit of the '57 Chevrolet. Peter.

Hi Paul, and welcome to the Club. The mileage you do points you towards a Diesel, and the 2.7 litre diesel is a very good engine -- I have one in my S Type -- the 3.0 litre was an improved version of that engine to meet higher European emissions criteria. And it is 240 bhp instead of 208 bhp. I have only been in one XF [sportbrake] and was quite impressed. Otherwise I also am not familiar with the XF. I would suggest getting the highest spec you can with the lowest mileage and a good service record. There will be a few XF owners who will give you some assistance and advice. But you will enjoy your Jaguar, whichever one you get. Regards, Peter.

Hi Phil, Have a look at Stratstone Jaguar [they are also the owners of Evans Halshaw] who as main dealers will give you a warranty, and will also bring a car from wherever it is to one of their dealerships near you. I had seen a nice S type in Dumfries and they offered to bring it down to Solihull for me. But then they offered me one that also fitted the bill closer which, although a bit more expensive, was within our Budget. Everthing was working properly and it is a great car. Peter. .

Hi Frank, I am sure that people who have bought cars in the past can be hard nosed enough to ask the pertinent questions, and if in doubt get something on writing. Passing on what they have seen, checking out the description, and assessing the honesty of the seller is something potential buyer could find useful before wasting time and fuel. Phil had a long day and used a lot of fuel going to see someone whose description of the car could have been written by Enid Blyton. Peter.

I know it is a bit like closing the door after the horse has bolted, but I would like to say that it might be a great idea for the future that if a club member [or indeed a potential Jaguar owner] was thinking of buying a car some distance away, a member living in that location could go and see the car in question just to check it was as described, and take the odd photograph. The potential owner could give a list of questions. My son once bought a car via eBay, and one of the things he wanted was air conditioning. The car was described as having aircon but the owner forgot to mention it wasn't working and actually needed a new unit. Just a thought, and I know that there are quite a few members who would assist. Peter.

Hi Keith, A lot depends on what fuel your are using --- premium fuel gets a better mpg. At the moment my 2,7 D has 29.9 mpg on the computer with mostly short runs using shell v power, which I expect. I think your 28 says that your mpg is a bit high unless you are driving like a boy racer. Having your engine terra cleaned might help, and if you are using supermarket fuel I would change to the expensive stuff. Regards, Peter.
