Jaguar's X-Type Production - How many Jags around?
Old Peter replied to Luksander's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
I did have a look at the Jaguar s type and x type report history, and found that about 40% of both models went to the uSA, with x type 3.0 litre AWD being quite popular in the North Eastern states, and the S type being popular in Arizona and California. I did see an S type in Phoenix once [silver 3.0 litre]. But remember that Ford who owned the marque at the time were far better engineers that record keepers. Peter.- 3 replies

Hi Trevor, I have never had a water leak other than a water pump failure on my wife's Viva HC, and a leaky radiator on mt Rover Sterling years ago. Talcum powder used to stop a leak at one time!! Regards, Peter.

Jaguar S type 2001 3L V6 auto gearbox problems
Old Peter replied to Dave Richard's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
Hi Dave, I am not as much a wizard as that Trevor! I would go along with what the code reader has said, initially. But some S type and x type owners with the auto gearbox have found that an oil change at abut 75k works wonders, even though Jaguar say that the gearbox is for life. Regards, Peter. -
Hi Bradley, I believe that the correct place for the temperature gauge is halfway. My temp gauge moves up very slowly [this is normal for a diesel engine] and then it sits there. That tells me that there is no great problem with yours. You should not have to top us that often, though, and Trevor has made a good suggestion. On the amber light - check engine performance - a OBD2 code reader would be useful and you could get one for under 30 euros by looking around on eBay, if you have not already got one. [i have just changed some money into euros so I know the exchange rate at the moment -- A week in Galway has been booked for June] I have seen quite a few posts on red light coming on saying low coolant, some of which have been due to a minor leak or a faulty sensor. However you had new coolant parts [rad and reservoir] fitted, so it is possible that a hose is not tight enough somewhere. Follow what Trevor has suggested and see the result. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the Club,Bradley. Is your S Type a petrol or diesel engined car? Does the temperature gauge move up quickly or slowly? I will look around and see what I can find, Regards Peter.

Hi Harvey, A bit strange, but I would check again the dual set up via the climate control setup. The cheap option is always worth trying. Peter.

ASDA do, Mike. I have a good relationship with the Halfords Auto centre on Sutton, but ASDA are very comparable. Peter.

Hi David, i have ben looking at tyres for my car today and with Pirelli wanting £164 for a P Zero assimetrico I am looking at a Goodyear of slightly better quality for £148. Try the Halfords site, put in the detail, and they will give you a price. I think that the price is rather average, rather than expensive. Peter.

Just a guess, Trevor, but I think it is the engine that counts. Peter.

Update: It turns out a connection was loose on terminals hence no power. Unit is working now however new problem! It asks for radio code; I dont have this. Looking on forums I tried the following method: I entered random code 3 times until says please wait, I then entered >> AMEM PTY and code is deactivated and nav, bluetooth working but says Radio Off. Tried everything radio/cd will not work, sat nav is fine though. Also when I switch car off and turn back on the whole cycle starts again I.e. asks for radio code...no sat nav or phone works until do the whole >> AMEM PTY mallarkey...any tips gents?! Hi Riz,, The radio code can be obtained via most garages. I had it done on a Ford Escort XR3i quite a few years ago. Regards, Peter.

I the days when you had t pull out the choke to get the car started, in the cold weather it took a longer time before you could push the choke fully back in. Nowadays the car does everything for you. There was a story about a lady who complained to a garage that the fuel consumption on her car was not very good. After several checks the mechanic asked he to take him out for a drive. She got into the car, pulled out the choke and hung her handbag on it.

I blame it on the weather -- slow warm up. Peter.

Hi Simon, As you suggested I did look up the whole development of the 2.7 D engine, and found the exact dates of emission requirements which showed exactly what you have just said. Manufacturers will save coppers wherever they can. I worked in the Steel Industry almost all my working life, and particularly involved with the automotive component parts of that industry, and while not an engineer, got to know how keen the manufacturers were to save money, as it all adds up on a long run. Peter.

Hi Gary, Sometimes dealers are not up to scratch with information. Simon put sone very informative and useful posts concerning emissions. I checked up the detail and using the VIN decoder I was told that my car had Stage IV requirements for emission control. Delving further via Google into the whole development of the 2.7 Engine and the Euro requirements I found the exact details. The dealer you spoke to could be asked about the recall of some diesel crass I mentioned. Regards, Peter.

Hi Gary, I think [and I think Jaguar agree] that the DPF was fitted in the S Type 2.7D from 2005 until discontinued in 2007/8. There was a recall by Jaguar of S types made between 2005 and 2007 to correct an issue regarding the overheating of certain DPFs. A total of 82 cars were recalled. The 2.7D engine was in production between 2004 until the 31st March 2007, and to meet Euro IV emissions the DPF was fitted from January 2005. [Engines already manufactured we installed in S types till discontinued, and some XF models until the 3.0 litreD was introduced Their is a VIN Decoder available on the internet which indicates emission requirements for your particular car. My car came off the production line on the 13th March 2007 and was registered on the 31st March 2007, although it is classed as a 2008 Model. Regards, Peter. P.S. Simon has posted some very useful information regarding emissions and Euro legislation.

Hi Ross, I don't know why you can't, but it might take time - a day or two. Steve [Admin] will sort it out if it takes longer. Regards, Peter.

Newbie, Scottish XF R-Sport Sportbrake
Old Peter replied to R55_SND's topic in New Members Introductions
Hi Ross, The only reason that many young people think that a Jaguar is an old persons car is that many young people think that they are a bit sedate. I would have loved a Jaguar when I was your age but the Mark 2 was too expensive --- I was buying a house which cost much less than a Mark 2. Add to that, many young people do not have the skills to drive a Jaguar, which are usually very quick cars. My rather sedate S Type has the 2.7 diesel, with a fast button and twin turbos and has fierce acceleration when the second turbo cuts in at 2000 rpm. Just tell that to your mates! Regards, Peter. -
17 vs 18 vs 19 vs 20 inch wheels for X-Type
Old Peter replied to Luksander's topic in Jaguar Wheels / Tyres
Hi Luks, A lot depends on the car you are driving. For the x type [i had a 2.5 AWD] the 17" wheels were regarded as the optimum, and gave a comfortable ride as well as a fast one on the X type, which is 12 inches or more shorter than the XJ. It also has a smaller engine and less bodyweight. Also a lot depends on the colour of the car if you are looking for appearance. A white car spells black wheels, and any other colour says silver. Stick with the 17" though! I will look out for you when I am in Galway in the summer. Regards, Peter. -
Hi Robert, and welcome to the club. There are a lot of very informative and friendly members here. I think you will enjoy the S type. It is a real Jaguar and the best car I have ever had. Regards, Peter.

Newbie, Scottish XF R-Sport Sportbrake
Old Peter replied to R55_SND's topic in New Members Introductions
Welcome to the Club, Ross. The Club members welcome photos of other members cars, as well as their experiences. I had a ride in a Sportbrake just after it came out and was very impressed. My son would like to buy one so he can borrow it, but, being a pensioner of advanced years, I would prefer him or buy one so I could borrow it. Regards, Peter. -
Hi Simon, It certainly cut emissions and also increased the speed of the car via more use of aluminium. But Autocar also makes the point that the Sales blurb at the time compared the XF 3.0D favourably with the BMW 5 series. It will be interesting to see the full range of engines being made at the Wolverhampton Factory going into the XE and how they perform on the road. Pter.

Hi Simon, The 2.7 diesel engine was a joint effort between Ford and Peugeot, and also went into several other JLR models. When I was researching the S Type after my x type was stolen, I had a long look at what were the best models to buy for a pensioner. A friend one told me the best cars to buy of any brand were the ones made at the end of a production run was all the problems should have been ironed out. A lot of people were surprised when Jaguar uprated the engine for the XF and other models in 2009/10. I think it was to compete with BMW. There is little said though on exhaust/filters etc. Peter.

Hi Simon and Gary, I have had a good look around re DPFs and find some contrary views. Jaguar - in their S Type Handbook say that all diesel engines are fitted with a DPF. There is a comment on another forum that Jaguar S types with two turned down exhaust pipe do not have a DPF fitted. A further comment says that Jaguars with a model year MY2006 - MY2008 have a DPF fitted. Also models with a VIN number N50727 to N82818 have a DPF fitted. [My car's VIN number starts N83] The S Type was manufactured when the company was owned by Ford, and Ford are not noted for putting too much effort into statistics, preferring to devote their time to engineering and making cars. So I am now mystified, too Regards, Peter.
-
Hi Simon, I have not been under a vehicle but doing so would not confirm whether or not a DPF had been altered . What is certain is that Jaguar say that DPFs are fitted to all diesel engines. Regards Peter.
