I normally use psi. What's a dot worth?

Hi Nige, I am no expert on the various types of coolant, but being a Lancastrian I am quite expert in getting value for money, so I would be inclined to use the Halford's voucher on getting something useful as the best quality car shampoo or engine oil. I would also check with Halfords --- they do have some useful mechanics --- if you can mix the various types of coolant, as they all do the same job. Regards, Peter.

what do main dealers do in a service?!
Old Peter replied to mk1escortmad's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
Welcome to the Club, David. You will get some very good advice from the members, although some might be very difficult to do. But lovely thoughts! But you could try to squeeze some little bits off the dealer, failing which, try Richard's tactic! Regards, Peter. -
I have them on my S type and rather like them. I replaced them a couple of months ago -- slightly different from the ones I had but work just the same. Peter.

Hi All :). looking for advice
Old Peter replied to TomDalliston's topic in New Members Introductions
Welcome to the club, Tom. I would not approach a dealership --- they would not see a Daimler, they would just see a nice fat profit. There are some specialist magazines which could be used for an advert, but what you first would have to do is establish a fair price for the car. I would put the details on google which ought to throw up some comparisons, and then take it from there. Good luck, Peter. -
Yes, Trevor. I forgot you don't have a garage which is essential with a rag top.
-
The biggest problem with a Rag Top is the sudden shower, although the Jaguar will have the electrics. Our Ford Escort XR3i didn't! Peter.

Being sensible is part of being a pensioner ---- but now and then.................... Peter.

Welcome to the club, Victor. I don't get oily hands any more, but it sounds a bit like an alternator problem. If it is not that I would try out the idea that the battery is not the right one for the car. Jaguars do like the right battery. I thought about getting an XJS but the boot size did not like two sets of golf clubs. Regards, Peter.
-
Welcome to the Club, Howard. I had heard that electrics were an issue in the early models. A friend of mine used to change his car [usually a Ford Cortina] every time a new model came out -- but unusually for one of the last of the old model. I hope that someone can assist you with their experience if similar. Regards, Peter

Welcome to the club, Allen. Like you I am not technically minded, but there some XJS owners who are. Trevor [Jagslag] might be able to offer you some good advice, Also, there is a topic in Jaguar Owners Lounge concerning Recommended Jaguar specialists and its lists locations. Regards, Peter.

Further to that, Robert and Chris, it does appear that on the earlier models the OBC was an optional extra, and only became standard on the face lifted models about 2008.
-
Hi Robert and Chris, I never thought about an OBC being fitted. My X type 2.5 SE had one, as has my S Type. It being an optional extra never crossed my mind at all. Peter.

Hi Ken, The main difference between the XKR and the XKR-S [when new] is just under £30k/. The engines are of the same size but what the engineers have done to the XKR-S is to increase its power by some mechanical/electronic wizardry that will let it do 186 mph when permitted. There will be other gubbins in the car also that will make it very nice to drive. Peter.

Hi Richard, The Euro lottery did not do its duty this week, so I will have to keep my S type for another week or so. The s type is a very nice car ---- it might well be my last car. Staying fit gets harder when the moving bits are getting a bit worn, I still have not put in an advert, though "Golf Clubs for sale". Regards, Peter.
-
Welcome to the Club, Ken. My wife now likes the XKR better than our S Type. She has forgotten I am now 80! You will enjoy your Jaguar, and there are many XK owners in the club who will help and advise. Regards, Peter.
-
Hi David, I had the same happen to me on a Rover Sterling. It had to be replaced -- quite cheap, - from a breaker's yard. I did check the wiring first, though. Peter.

Very useful piece of information, Adrian. I usually use the screen wash a couple of times a week so that could also stop the wipers seizing.

Hi Robert, There is a small reserve which is about the level in your previous car when the amber light comes on. I wold advise adding fuel as soon as that light comes on, especially with an older car just to ensure that there is no offensive stuff getting through. I think the trip computer is saying "Get some petrol in here". Regards, Peter

Welcome to the Club, Steven. The S type is a great ride, and I fail to see why the [alleged] experts and all their equipment cannot get the wheels aligned perfectly. I have 18" alloys with Pirellis on my s type 2.7D SE and find the handling really great. Keep on trying! Regards, Peter.

Hi Daniel. I sounds like a loose electrical connection or a fuse that is faulty/needs cleaning. Peter.

replacing xj6 roof lining can it be DIY
Old Peter replied to dickfromoz's topic in Jaguar Car Care and Detailing Inside & Out
Welcome to the Club, !Removed!. I have seen You Tube videos of replacing roof linings, plus a Wheeler Dealer programme which included replacing a sagging roof lining. It might be worth checking those out. Regards, Peter. -
Welcome to the Club, John. A steady drive using cruise control is a good tip, and another is not using supermarket fuel, and using a tankful of the best quality forecourt fuel. I have a S Type 2.7D and recently achieved 49.2 mpg on an 80 mile journey using top quality fuel. But I do like to do a bit of driving with the S button switched on! Regards, Peter.

shhhsh noise from 2.5 awd auto on lift off of throttle
Old Peter replied to james9149's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
Hi James, I was out yesterday and tried coasting down a gentle gradient but no untoward noise. The highest point round here is only about 250 feet above sea level. The North Yorkshire moors has some real hills which I know quite well. My sister lives in Glaisdale, and when I was working in Teesside I always used to go over there. The Jaguar experience is rather good! Regards, Peter. -
best thing you like about your x type
Old Peter replied to the mechanic's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
The first cars of the X Type came under the ownership of the Ford Motor Company. They discontinued the Mondeo Ghia, and actually badged the Mondeo as the Jaguar X type It didn't sell. The Jaguar design team and the Jaguar management pleased with Ford to let them design a real Jaguar, and use whatever Ford Parts that they needed. And so the X Type was born. To the existing FWD engines a 2.5 V6 and a 3.0 litre V6 with All Wheel Drive. These sold very well in the USA. Then the Diesel Models were added. A lot of parts designed for the Mondeo were used ---- nothing wrong with that, as car manufacturers had been doing that for years. Morgan used the Rover Engine, Rover used a Peugeot engine in its 218 and 418 models, and even Rolls Royce used a Buick 5.6 litre engine and latterly a BMW engine. The X type used a Mondeo Floor pan and the S type [mosty designed in Detroit] uses a Lincold floor pan. The diesel engine used by JLR in the Freelander and in the S Type was designed as a joint venture between Ford and Peugeot, and is used in quite a few other 4x4 diesels. A lot of the other bits, such as strengthening struts inside the bodywork of many cars and chassis strengtheners are made by the same manufacturers in the West Midlands as are the forged parts, alternators, radiators and exhausts. But the essential design of all Jaguar Cars is all Jaguar. And the Company is righty proud.
