Hi Sam, Different cars suit different makes of tyre. I have heard that Vredestein manufacture a good all round tyre, but I do think the best opinions could well come from those club members who drive similar cars to yours. My car is not the same model as yours -- just a 208bhp S type Diesel SE, and will have far different driving characteristics than yours. Regards, Peter.

Hi Kantilal, and welcome to the club. I have a cover for my s type but it is not completely waterproof and just covers the roof and windows and is only used in snow. To get a fully waterproof cover to combat the Yorkshire winters you will probably have to get one of the dearer ones. To combat bombing birds, a fairly cheap one will do. We have bird who tend to nest in the eaves, and I have found the exact place on my drive to park where they miss most of the time. Regards, Peter.

Hi Rick and welcome to the club. It is pleasing to hear from someone from the USA who drives British cars. We do make good cars over here, contrary to some opinion. I live just 6 miles away from the Jaguar manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. Michelin get a good report, as do Pirelli. I have ben told by the owner of a tyre fitting company [ who still fits tyres and has 40 years experience] that Continental tyres are not that good. I drive an S Type and admit to liking Pirellis. The best option is to read all the reviews and to get the best tyres that suits your driving. Regards, Peter.

The acceleration between 30 and 70 with the S button [2.7 diesel] is tremendous. I hesitate to think of how fast the car will go. BUT remember you must put more pressure into the tyres -- from 31 to 38 psi in my case. I have never gone that fast, --- over 70 is difficult as I have a speed limiter on the front passenger seat.

Hi Kevin, A further addition to my previous post. I have had a quick check on speed ratings and the J rating is the rating for a maximum speed of 62 mph at the full load for the car. Whoever fitted them was ill advised. The one thing you cannot cut corners on are the tyres that you fit to your car. Regards Peter.

Hi Kevin, A local tyre fitting.company owner told me to avoid continentals, why I do not know. What model of x type did you have? That has a bearing on the tyres you should have I had an X Type 2.5 AWD which I ran on Pirellis 225 - 45 - 17 - Y. My S Type runs on Pirellis 245 - 40 - 18 - Y. A J rating sound quite a low rating. I have heard good words about Vredestein, which is a Dutch/American company. Regards, Peter.

I went up to the Lake District last week and after a run through the scenic route and a little bit on the motorway the car showed 36.2 mpg. On the return journey, the car was showing 42.8 mpg doing 70 mph with Cruise control on when we came to a deluge, followed by 30 miles of stop start between exits 21 to 18 on the M6 which reduced the mpg to 40.2. I used Shell Expensive fuel [they call it some fancy name] and I was very pleased with the way the engine performed. The 2.7 Diesel engine is an excellent unit and the more expensive fuel plus a Terraclean is paying dividends. Peter.

Welcome to the Club, Mike. Head gaskets on the way out should usually show some oil in the coolant reservoir. The last time I replaced one was on a Triumph Herald. That was a bit easy. Nowadays you need a bit more expertise than I have. But there are some very expert members who will share their experience of doing that job. Regards, Peter.

I have a proper spare wheel on my s type and the tyre is a brand I had never heard of - an Evergreen. I have since looked them up and they appear to be a Chinese company that is producing quality tyres. The last price I found was £100.45 a corner against Pirelli which was £146 -- for 245 40 on 18" rims. I don't think that includes fitting. Prices seem to vary so much,seemingly season by season, but it would be interesting to know if there is any opinion on these tyres by any user. Peter.

Thanks for all the good wishes, guys. A five day party takes some stamina, as does all the walking etc at Center Parcs. But a nice fillet steak off the barbecue when we got home last night after a wet 180 miles was enjoyable! I proved to my children that the old man has still got it! Regards, Peter.

Hi Colin, Electronics are a fine art and it often takes a specialist [independent preferably] to sort the problem out. My lump hammer is not used as a tool in these circumstances. It is possible that not running the engine once a week has something to do with the problem, and if you can do that it could well help. I have laid up my car for spells when on holiday, but have had my son turn over the engine once a week. The only time when I had a problem was when the car wouldn't start even though the battery was ok. Luckily, the starting handle kept under the seat did the job! Regards, Peter.

Thanks Colin. The leaping Jaguar on the bonnet was discontinued by the designers some years ago, but it is a matter of choice whether to fit one or not. Apparently it is quite easy to attach. The site to look at is Adamesh. But the modern Jaguar has one on the boot --- a flat design rather than the "figurine". There is space for a smaller version, about 7/8 cm which comes with an adhesive pad on the back. It looks good too!. Regards, Peter.

Colin, The S type is a beautiful car, great to drive, and a great looker, and was the dream car of Sir William Lyons. Apart from keeping my car well washed and the paintwork well treated, a small leaping Jaguar on the boot is the only addition, Just recovering from a 5 day birthday party. Peter.

I am parked in gravel a at the moment in Keswick. Not that deep but still difficult to manoeuvre. On the steep hills up here they use 12 inch deep gravel in escape lanes to stop runaway lorries. Peter.
