Hi Andy, Glad all OK now. I stick a label on my battery with the date it was bought as a reminder. Regards, Peter.

Hi Nigel, I have found that it is not the speed of a car that controls the mpg of a car, it is the smoothness of the driving. Acceleration with a big engine needs not to push the pedal to the metal but the but to bring the car up to the required speed and feel the gear changes on the automatic gearbox [if on your car]. A steady and smooth drive without using the brakes too much will give a better mpg than those drivers who give the pedal too much and then have to brake hard at every bend and road junction. You can be quick and smooth. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the Club, Mike. That seems to be a very difficult fact to assess, as we don't seem to have that problem in the UK, with quite a lot of Jaguars with the V6 engines are getting mileages over 100k miles. It will be interesting to hear from other members. I do now that my S Type --- all models have the V6 and V8 engines --- is the best car I have ever had and I have been driving fo almost 60 years. Let us hope we do see some feed back. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the club, Jon. The Jaguar experience is a rather unique one. Bill Lyons, who was the founder of Jaguar Cars, described an early model as having "Grace, Pace and Space", and you can't have better than that. I have a 12 year old S Type Jaguar and would not have anything less. I live in the West Midlands of the UK and 6miles from the main Jaguar Factory where your car was made. We do make good Cars round here, so enjoy. Regards, Peter.

Hi Nigel and welcome to the club. A lot depends on whether you are doing long runs on a dual carriageway or motorway, wether you are spending more time on minor roads or single lane roads. I have an s type with the 2.7 diesel and when I am not doing a long run I do tend to show a mileage or around 30 mpg. On a long run I will get on average about 45 mpg. I always use Shell V Power and it does give a better mpg as well as a smoother ride. I also use an additive [Millers ECO plus diesel] which keeps the EGR valves clean and also helps the DPF regenerate. Regards, Peter.

Hi Mike, I am exactly in the same position as you, apart from the price. I have had delivered to me yesterday one sensor two days after ordering at a cost of £33. The company were unable to send the correct colour [Indigo Blue] but they did send one in black, which is near enough -- my mechanic told me that. The bumper has to come off is true. The company is Myton Automotive and the website is mytonautomotive.com. They will try to get you the correct colour. The mechanic I use and have done for 18 years is now on holiday and will fit it for about £50 when he gets back.. If you want to telephone Myton Automotive their number is 01926 427375 and ask to speak to Ros and mention my name. This is the first time I have used this company - and I was rather pleased. Regards, Peter.

Late 2009 XF 3.0D S Portfolio engine rattle / tick etc
Old Peter replied to Elliott71's topic in Jaguar XF Club
Hi Elliot, I noted that tick. Would have annoyed me too. I might be worth getting a good mechanic with a good diagnostic tool to see what that would tell you. A diagnostic test from a main dealer would cost £174 -- outrageous -- but a good garage should charge about £40. I have not come across the 2 litre Ingenium engine yet so I cannot give you an opinion. Regards, Peter. -
Late 2009 XF 3.0D S Portfolio engine rattle / tick etc
Old Peter replied to Elliott71's topic in Jaguar XF Club
Hi Elliot, The undertray does make some difference, as rather than deflect it is supposed to muffle the noise. The first diesel i drove was a Fordson Tractor and it was in 1960 and the only thing to muffle the noise was earplugs, so the quietness of the Jaguar is wonderful! Peter. -
Late 2009 XF 3.0D S Portfolio engine rattle / tick etc
Old Peter replied to Elliott71's topic in Jaguar XF Club
Hi Elliot, and welcome to the club. I am somewhat surprised that your are finding your car somewhat noisy on startup. I am wondering it there is some noise padding missing under the bonnet. The engine on my is type [2.7 diesel] is the one from which yours was developed and is remarkable quiet, particularly inside the cabin. I use premium fuel plus Millers Eco plus, which keeps my DPF and ERGs clean as I don't do many long runs. Let us know if there are any changes in the noise department. Regards, Peter, P.S. My son, who has an X type 2.0 litre D has the noise control pad under the engine cover missing, sounds like a Massey Ferguson on startup! -
Gearbox fault and heater plug light
Old Peter replied to Anthony palmowski's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
Hi Anthony, EGR valves do get dirty and eventually they have to be replaced, There are two EGR valves on the 2.7 diesel S Type and I took the step of replacing them both earlier this year. I do add an additive [Millers Diesel Eco plus] and I do use premium fuel which does keep the system cleaner. I do a lot of short runs and have never had a problem with the other diesel issue, the Diesel Particulate Filter, the replacement of which is a serious price!. Regards, Peter. -
Hi Alan and Robert, Carl, my mechanic, put his diagnostic tool on the car and the result was that one sensor had failed. I will be getting a placement tomorrow and will let you know the cost. The cost of the diagnostic was mates rates - £10 -- he didn't ask, I made him have it! Regards, Peter.
-
HI Robert, I will let you know what Carl finds. When all sensors fail it could be the fuse which is in the car interior fuse box which in in the drivers footwell. The fuse covers both front and rear sensors. I think the fuse is F28. It is difficult to extract. Regards, Peter.
-
Hi Alan, On my s type the fuse covers both rear and front sensors, and I am only having the front beepers working. I will post what my mechanic [I have had him look after my cars for 18 years] finds out when he comes over this evening. Regards Peter.

Rear parking camera slow on uptake
Old Peter replied to Christopher Pearcey's topic in Jaguar XF Club
HI Clive, I thought you had but, as you say, not posting a lot. I am having a problem with the rear parking sensors and my mechanic is coming over this evening when traffic has died down to put his diagnostics on and locate the source. [Jaguar main dealers will diagnose the fault for £174]. Regards, Peter. -
Rear parking camera slow on uptake
Old Peter replied to Christopher Pearcey's topic in Jaguar XF Club
Welcome to the Club, Clive. I don't have the camera on my s type - wish I had - but my wife has a Toyota Yaris which has a camera. It comes on very quickly when you put the car into reverse. Just about 2 seconds. I wonder, like you, why the Jaguar isn't that quick. Regards, Peter. -
Hi All, The reversing beeps have stopped on my S Type. I first thought it could be the fuse, but as the fuse also cover the front beeps I concluded it was something else as they are working. The 3 second beep and the red light comes on above. Anyone got ant ideas? Regards, Peter.

Hi Martin, I have a Platinum Battery, which is a good one with a price of £110. [Made in Manchester]. Of the two you have been told about I have heard that both are quite good, but for the diesel Bosch seems to be the one to go for. Regards, Peter.

RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE MYSTERY - ON MOTORWAYS?
Old Peter replied to StrayCat's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
Hi Jim, Have you an OBD2 code reader that will give you a guide. Your local garage should have one also. Currently I am doing an IAM Roadsmart course and due to my s type "creeping" a little it was getting occasionally over the speed limit by the odd mile or two. What I did was to use the manual option and using the J gate I would take it into 3rd gear in urban areas to get some drag. After a few weeks "Restricted Performance came up. The code said "Gearbox Fault". A much better diagnostic tool than mine more or less told me that the ECU didn't like me going from 3rd gear to Automatic. Apparently it would have liked me to go from 3rd to 4th and then to 5th before changing to automatic. I just erased restricted performance and did what I was told to do! Regards, Peter. -
Hi Roy, It might be worth to take out the disc and clean it, then re install. Peter.
-
I never thought of that, Joe. Peter.
-
Welcome to the club, Greg, You will enjoy the Jaguar experience. I was told I would never have another make of car - I am driving my second Jaguar, and I think the salesman was right. Regards, Peter.
-
Welcome to the club, Karinee. You will need to have an OBD2 code reader to find the reason for the restricted performance. The AA or RAC will do that for you if you are member of either, otherwise you will have to take it to a garage. I don't think it has anything to do with the lights. Let us know how you get on. Regards, Peter.

How Much to Connect a Diagnostic Meter?
Old Peter replied to Force4145's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
I got one via the internet that is Jaguar specific but which is good for engines only -- That was 4 years ago and only cost £20. It does gives codes which I have found useful. I was thinking of getting one a little bit more helpful which will cost about £150. Peter -
Hi Martin, The battery on the s type lasts about 5 years, so that could certainly be the problem. When I bought my s type in 2013 it has a new battery a bout 6 months before. I changed it when it was 4 years and 11 months old [It had a date on]. The cold weather does not help. Tha battery is getting plenty of charging but it appears not to be holding the charge. Christmas present for the car - New battery. Regards, Peter.

Battery Drain after 10 days away
Old Peter replied to londonxk8's topic in XK8 / XKR ( X100) 1996 - 2006
Hi Jason, There are so many electrical sensors etc in modern cars. I charge my battery every two weeks as I don't do many long runs. If you could find a solar charger big enough to charge your car that could be the answer. Regards, Peter.
