  1. Hi Ian, I had one of the first 6 Honda Dreams in the UK. I was in Liverpool when they came in and my BSA was on its way out, and my Triumph T100 needed repair, so on an impulse I bought it with a loan from the bank of Mum and Dad. It could have been kept in the hall and would not have dropped any oil. Regards, Peter.
  2. Hi Ian, You are not the first to be dissatisfied with a remap, although there are many who are very pleased with the car after it has been done. I have not been tempted to have a remap on my S Type 2.7 diesel as I find 208 bhp quite sufficient and I do put my trust in the engineers who designed and built the engine. I think they do know a bit more than I do and probably a bit more than those who do the remap. The main reason I do not like remaps is that in 1963/4 I was driving a Honda motorcycle which was capable of 100mph plus. A friend had a motorcycle of a different brand with a top speed of circa 95 mph, and to compete he had it retuned to a high level, and on our first day out on a local dual carriage way [no motorways and no speed limits then] while I was doing a steady 90 mph he passed me at about 110 mph - and I couldn't catch him until his engine blew up!   6. Hi Mike, Not a bad result in all. My s type Sat Nav is at its limit -- no more discs made after 2012, and if I need to I use Google Maps on my iPhone which is always updated. Regards, Peter.
  7. Welcome to the club, Colin. The first question I will ask is the mileage and the service record. Your car is 10 years old and should have had a cambelt change at either 10 years or 105k miles. You should also check the age of the battery, as Jaguars have a lot of electrical equipment and batteries usually last about 5 years. The engine in your XF is the same one as I have in my s type, and it is a very good engine, well engineered, and designed as a joint venture between Ford and Peugeot plus some other input from other automotive companies. One of the issues with diesel engines is that the fuel system is quite a complicated one, with Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves, [EGR] which sometimes stick, and a Diesel Particulate Filter [DPF] which sometime gets full. Having said that, neither of those parts can cause a problem if you treat the engine and the fuel system correctly. You should always use Premium Fuel. I use Shell V Power -- a good fuel and a Shell Petrol station 500 yards away! I also occasionally use an additive to keep theEGR vales and the DPF clean [Millers Diesel Eco Plus]. If you do a lot of short runs, you should also do a longer run once a month or so which will regenerate the DPF -- just about 20 minutes keeping the revs about the level for 45 mph. If your car can be locked in a gear -- 3rd or 4th that will help. The engine will get hot and the particulates in the filter will be burnt off, and the DPF will be good as new. On a good note, I doo a lot of shorter runs but have never had a problem with the DPF filter and I have had my car for 5 years. This is a long post, but the best advice is to enjoy your car, after all, it is a Jaguar! Regards, Peter.

  10. Hi David, You were lucky to find that the cam belt needed changing -- 105k or 10 years is the norm. My s type had a new engine when it was 2 years old, so when it is 12 years old - next year - it will have a change. Peter.
  11. Hi Dave, Yes, I have recommended premium fuel for quite a few years. The 2.7 Diesel used by Jaguar and specifically designed for performance likes good fuel. I did come across a person who said that he used recycled diesel in his transit van -- old chip fat etc -- and he said he had never had a problem. A few months later he was looking for a new engine. I have it on good authority that Jaguar are setting up a department that will move on from the Lightweight E-Type when 18 were made to re engineering earlier models from the XK150 to earlier models.   13. Hi Jim, A brilliant and detailed summary of the S type. Indeed, your research is not dissimilar to the book I am currently writing "Jaguar, its Cars and its People", but in far more detail, Two weeks ago I had a meeting with SirJohn Egan, who was CEO of Jaguar from 1980 until the Ford take-over in 1989, and who rates the S type very highly as a real contribution to the Jaguar line up. And as a S type owner, I agree with his comment that the roadholding of the S Type was real Jaguar style. When Ian Callum was given the job of designing the new Jaguar, the XF, he sat inside the Mk2 Jaguar to think, and his first thought were that he had to create atmosphere which makes Jaguar have a difference with other luxury cars. It comes as no surprise to me the Jaguar are re-engineering the Mk2 and will be producing later in the years the first new model of the Mk2, prices at somewhere between £300,000 and £350,000.   14. Hi Nick, I have been using Shell V Power for five years, plus the occasional dose of Millers Eco Plus [Diesel]. The mpg has been better and I have never had a DPF problem; Peter.

  16. Hi David, Mandi isn't back from Edinburgh till Wednesday - a family wedding. I was hoping that we could have an annual event at Lancaster Jaguar who are currently developing a huge Jaguar LandRover site in Wolverhampton. Personally, I thought that the local members of the JOC let the club down --- they missed a good day, but those that came a good distance were just what the club wants and needs. The club is not just for answering queries but also for having days out. I will let you know any feedback I get. Regards, Peter.

I might come down to Gaydon some Saturdays and persuade SWMBO to come down for the day.   22. Today is a good day for giving your car the once over before the JOC Event in Tamworth at Lancaster Jaguar. My S Type had a wash yesterday and was well rinsed when it rained. Today will see a good waxing and a good polishing, and the interior examined for anything untoward. There will be a good exchange of experiences, and some very good opinions about cars, new and old. All members will be welcome, even if your car is an older one that still needs a touch to get it to the condition you want. No booking, no forms to fill in, just turn up, talk about Jaguars and enjoy a sunny Sunday. Regards, Peter.
  23. Hi Jan, One of the things about lights is that the MOT can be quite severe on even minor changes. My s type's lights were a little poor and I examined possible solutions. Halfords fitted new bulbs with 20% stronger lights. The 2007 s type does not have fog lights at the front which was the basic reason I had the lights updated. The car then goes for its MOT -- everything perfect EXCEPT for the lights on which it registered a failure. Luckily, my mechanic who I have used for 16 years was present at the MOT and immediately corrected the lighting issue. Moral of the story - leave the lights to experts. Regards, Peter.
  24. Hi Mike, I am inclined to agree with Steve. Warning lights can also be affected if the car battery is low. I have the ABS warning light coming on and then going off, which have been easily and cheaply solved by put the battery on a charger. Regards, Peter.
