Hi Alex, The handbook tells thy to keep the climate control always switched on as it keeps the system lubricated. The only time the light should go off is when you have pressed the defrost button. When the car is defrosted press the Auto [AC] button again to activate the system. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the club, Kris. The DPF and the EGR valves are there for a purpose, and they do appear to do their job. But like all mechanical parts they need some attention. My s type 2.7Diesel has sometimes had sticky EGR valves which can be cured by a blast on faster roads, but I have never had a DPF problem as i make sure there is a longer run once a month or so, just over 40 mph for 20 minutes will do the job. I also use Shell V power plus a ship of a Millers additive to keep the DPF in order, Regards, Peter.

Hi Mike, I had my car terra cleaned 4 years ago and it did have a good result lasting for a few months. It never "Killed" my injectors and the car has run quietly and smoothly for all that time. Smoking from the exhaust is usually a fuel issue. Recommended to me was a product that sleazes the smoke issue called Diesel Magic and it certainly worked on my son's X Type 2.0DD, which was smoking badly pm start up. Regards, Peter.

Hi Gareth, I sometimes get the odd shudder but there has been nothing to worry about. Some owners have their gearbox oil changed ar around 70k miles. I generally do not accelerate very hard as I have found that it is quite easy to get the car into the Red, which `i try to avoid. Water in the boot is not uncommon if the car has been outside/unused for a while. I had it and managed to clear it by cleaning and revitalising the rubber boot seals. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the club, Gareth. I couldn't add to what Joe has said, and from my experience the S Type Jaguar is very reliable. I have had my 2007 plate S Type SE 2.7 Diesel for four and a half years, and it has passed all its MOTs without even an advisory. I had to replace the water pump a couple of years ago, but apart from new tyres I have spent nothing else on necessary items. Great car to drive, and the engine is more than adequate for all your needs. Treat it well, use premium fuel, and it will give you over 45 mpg on a long run. Regards, Peter.

I have just seen an item on BBC news which might be interesting to members who use their smartphones as a Sat Nav. Google Maps is an excellent substitute for a Sat Nav. However there seems to be some issues with the use of a mobile 'phone in a car while driving even though it is not being used as a 'phone, with some police forces issuing a ticket to drivers who are purely using the 'phone as a Sat Nav. Lawyers are calling for the Government to issue clarification as to the use of mobile 'phones. Hopefully this will be rectified before legislation changes are made in the next few months. Peter.

Hi Mike, Is your s type a petrol or a diesel? Diesel engines like to be treated gently on pulling away, but at over 20 mph show their teeth. They also like premium fuel which has extra additives to keep the fuel system clean. That is a drivers answer rather than a mechanics answer. All cars have their idiosyncrasies but both petrol and diesel engines do like a clean fuel system. I give my diesel a little shot of an additive that keeps the injectors clean once month or so, which combined with Shell V Power always gives me a smooth ride. Toyota were the 100% owners of Denso at one time and it was largely due to the Japanese Government pressure that they reduced their shareholding to 25% which it is now. Denso stopped making discs fr certain models 5 years after a model for which it suplied the unit had stopped producing. Simple a business decision. They still supply Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW etc with the sat nav. Lucas deteriorated in quality at the same time that the British Car industry was taking the hit from the Japanese. Peter.

I am given to the understanding that Denso was founded in Japan in 1949 and was part owned by Toyota, who still own 25% of the Company, which is one of the largest global companies in existence, supplying parts to all of the major manufacturers. Lucas was the biggest supplier to the automotive industry in the UK and as the British Car industry diminished, so did Lucas. Lucas supplied cheap parts to the car industry which mostly lasted less than two years and were the subject of many recalls, especially when Lucas found out that a recall was worth more to them than the part actually cost. "Saving Jaguar" by John Egan illustrate this issue Thee is no real connection of Denso with Lucas, Peter.

Richard III was really from Leicestershire, but thought the House of York could beat the House of Lancaster -- mistakenly. We live about 15 miles from Bosworth Field and know the scenario quite well. Richard III and his army stood at the top pf the hill and waited for the Lancastrians to start walking up the hill to fight them. The Lancastrians sent a few soldiers to the bottom of the hill and when the Yorkists charge they fled and the Yorkists though they had won when they got to the bottom of the hill. The Lancastrians then charged, and Richard III's horse got scarred, threw him and he had to fight the cavalry on foot. He then blamed the horse, "My kingdom for [because of] a horse." The descendants of that horse are regular runners at Haydock Park, but true to form have never won a race.

That is correct, Ron. Very generous folk are Lancastrians, but they are agin being diddled, particularly by Yorkshiremen.

Welcome to the club, Jim. My son has a Jaguar x type that had the same issue. Can of Diesel Magic plus using premium fuel cured both the smoke and the jerky running almost instantly. Black smoke is usually a fuel system warning that can be rectified easily. Regards, Peter.

Well one to the club, Steve. The 2.7 engine is a great engine and will last a long time, if you look after it. Treat it to premium diesel - I use shell v power, and you will get a good mpg. The engine has a cam belt which should be changed at 105k or 10 years whichever s reached first, so I would check with the previous owner if it has met those requirements. Regards, Peter.
