Trying to replicate the sound can be done by yourself at no cost other than fuel. As Ron has said "non specific". My S Type lost some power 100 yards from home but no warning light. When I got on the drive, I just raided the ticker rev to 2000 rpm - a dull bang and a puff of smoke and all has been well ever since.. If there is nothing apparent under the bonnet and the car drives well, and the garage cannot find anything, I would guess that there is nothing wrong. Peter.

Hi Rob, and welcome to the club. I have come across the "lurch" occasionally, but it has not been a serious issue. Mike has made a good suggestion, and it might be worth taking that option a bit further by putting the gearbox manually into third gear and running it for a few miles, slowing down and accelertating occasionally, [traffic and safety permitting]. I do know that gearbox problems have been cured by a gearbox oil change. Let us know how you get on. Regards, Peter.

You are quite right in what you have said about negative reports --- only a small percentage of owners --- but sharing experiences is a good thing although I like to see the ones who praise their cars and share the good experiences too. Hi Andy, and welcome to the club. I was told when I bought my s type four years ago that if the battery was getting low unesstial equipment would shut down first to make sure that essential pieces of equipment could function. I know that it is a new car, but batteries are batteries and even a new one can use up power. Just a thought. Regards, Peter.

You cannot disinvent the internal combustion engine. You can improve it and it has come a long way since the side valve engine, eve though that is still used in lawn mowers etc. Emissions from the engine seems to be the issue, and putting charges on certain vehicles and banning others from certain roads is rather stupid. Not only that, the air above the UK is not static and what is done with emissions in the UK could result in our clean air being blown to another country and their dirty air being moved over here. My comment on Formula 1 going all electric would say to the manufacturers what can you do to make the electric engine perform in the same was as the petrol or diesel engine. When they say that they can't. and they will, the idea of an all electric country is confined to the bin. After all, we have steam trains still running! Peter.

There will be much argument with load of pros and cons. I think that the Government have jumped in too quickly to consider all the implications. I might have been better if the PM had changed the XJ she uses to go from Downing Street to the House of Commons to a nice little Hybrid for starters. Battery technology is coming in quite quickly though. SWMBO has a Toyota Yaris Hybrid which also has a 1.5 litre petrol engine. The battery that operated the electric engine sits under the rear seats and does take up a lot of room. Ideal for shopping and city driving and the quietness can be a bit eerie. It is al a bit of wait and see, and if Formula 1 went wholly electrical we might see some answers. Peter.

Hi Mark, I also had my car Terracleaned and also started using v power at the same time. There is a Shell Station just 500 yards away that is also the cheapest in the area, which is rather useful. I get a fiver every couple of months from the Shell Drivers club which is useful! Regards, Peter.

Hi Mark, I am not a great fan of additives, but I was getting quite a few EGR problems and was recommended Millers Eco Max after which I never had any at all. I do not use it for every fill up, but about every three or four. My car is the same year as yours and in the four years I have had it I have never had a DPF problem and in the last year since using Eco Max no EGR problems either. SWMBO found the Jaguar too difficult to park, and wanted a bit of independence and as I am no fan of shopping I invested the money for a cruise to the Azores for a month in a car! Regards, Peter.

Hi Mark, The long motorway/dual carriageway runs always give a good mpg. The shorter stop - start runs gives me about 30 t0 35. I aways use Shell V power and now and then I put in a small amount of Millers Oils Diesel Power Eco Max which reduces emissions, cleans the injectors and adds a small amount of Cetane to the fuel mix. I rarely use my car for short runs as SWMBO's car is a Hybrid which runs on air. Regards, Peter.

Hi Folks, We have just returned from a short break in the Lake District, which we visit quite frequently and which I have been doing for over 70 years. On the way up my S Type [2.7 diesel] returned 45.7 mpg and on the return trip this morning the 134 miles done in 2 hours and 35 minutes [despite 30 miles of road works with a 50 mph limit] returned 46.6 mpg. Rather pleased. The S Type [Morgana] ventured into Patterdale via the Kirkstone Pass from Ambleside -- the very steep bit as there had been an accident on the Pass on the Windemere Route -- without a problem. In site of the weather we enjoyed the break. Regards, Peter.

My S type is named after the famous Welsh Witch, Morgana, and the Sat Nav Lady is named Doris -- a very polite way of speaking to us -- "Turn Left soon if it is not too much trouble". Peter.

There are many after market parts available to the S Type, and the parts manufacturers in the Black Country are doing good business. Peter.

Hi Adrian, and welcome to the Club. E Types are a bit like London 'Buses -- two new members with similar e types have just joined the club. Good advice in respect of Classic Cars is often given by Jaguar Heritage. The David Manners Group is also rather good a supplying parts for Classic cars. Hi Jeff, I have tried a solar charger but it is not very good on the big battery in my Jaguar. You can get a trickle charger to do the business overnight if you can garage your car, or if the car is parked in an inconspicuous place. I sometimes give my car a charge if I have not had a longish run, but with the battery being in the boot it can be a bit difficult to keep the boot lid closed. There must be a good way, and other members might well know it Regards, Peter.

In Chris's case there is no disc in the sat nav player in his car. Sometimes when trading in a car certain owners remove the disc to use either in their next car or to sell on eBay, Peter.

Hi Mark, You fid mention that the battery had been changed. There batter is my S Type needed caging after 4 years and 11 months, and some of the electrical niggles it had suddenly disappeared. A weakening battery is know to be very fickle! Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the club, Mark. I also think its is a fuel problem. I am assuming your car is a diesel, and if so do you use Premium fuel? I find it gives better fuel consumption, as well as being a cleaner fuel. I would be inclined to pit in an additive, Diesel Magic costs under a tenner and will give the fuel system a good clean out. Hi Danny, While the XF is s great car, I looked for an S type when my X Type was stolen, and for £9600 [four years ago I found a 2007 model = a 2.7 Diesel with only 48k on the clock and also with a new engine fitted by Jaguar after 28k miles while in Jaguar ownership. My car has all the bells and whistles, with over £11,000 of optional extras factory fitted. It could be worth a few hours of googling to find an S type with a low mileage -- there are some about.
