Welcome to the club, Jim. When people say that your S type is a Lincoln, tell them that their Rolls Royce i a Buick! The s type is a proper Jaguar and a future classic. The floor pan may well be a piece of Detroit Lincoln, but when you think the most cars nowadays have parts in common you will realise that such things happen. And mostly are rather good. I have looked through various sites and have found details of the the number of Jaguar models produced, but have found that while Jaguar cars were pretty good with keeping such details, Ford were not too bothered with such intricate paperwork. Hi Dennis and welcome to the Club. I have had the same problem with my S Type 2.7D on an 07 plate. Also affected by cold weather. My mechanic checked out the park brake system, the module and the wiring, and found all was OK. After being annoyed with it for two years I replace my battery last December and have not had the problem since My battery was a Varta fitted by jaguar and was 4 years and 11 months old. I would check out your battery and if it is around 5 years old I would replace it. Let is know how you get on. Regards, Peter.

Hi Sarah, Glad you got it sorted. The DPF can be somewhat of a pain, and for a lot of short runs a petrol engine is better, unless you can organise a long run now and then. I solved the problem of using my car for short runs by buying my wife a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, which has a 1.5 litre petrol engine which transfers into electric mode when doing less than 40 mph and keeps popping in an out of electric mode while the battery is changing. Jaguar have just announced a new model to replace the F Type, which will be known as the E Type! [but not like the one below - driven by Mary Sayer, daughter of the e type designer] Regards, Peter

I bought my s type just over 4 years with 48k on the clock, and then found out from the dealer/service record that a new engine had been fitted under warrant at 28k miles following an oil pump failure -- it was then owned by the dealer! The only expense other than tyres/servicing etc have been a new water pump and a new battery. Regatrds Peter Lancastrian in Exile.

I disagree very firmly with Paul. Additives are not expensive, nor are they snake oil. A can of a suitable additive which you will use less than once a month will cost around £10 and will assist with the DPF Regeneration. And avoid a remap, quite unnecessary, unless you want to become a boy racer. The engine which Jaguar have put into your car is a very well designed engine and I would recommend that it is not interfered with. My s type is 10 years old and runs very sweetly, and I find 208 bhp very powerful. Peter.

HI Sarah, A plethora of short trips can affect the DPF. I sometimes get the orange light on, which is usually Code P0402 -- EGR valves not open -- just ssticky - and a blast on the A38 can work - sometimes. I use Wynnes diesel power to cure that. Being retired for the past 18 years I can usually fit in a longish run and since I bought my wife a nice smaller car for our 50th wedding anniversary, the short supermarket runs don't require my car. Find a DPF cleaning additive and take the car on a run -- this hot weather will get the engine hot a bit quicker -- and with some luck the DPF will regenerate. Regards, Peter

Welcome to the Club Sarah. It does look as if the DPF has not been regenerated totally. They do need a longer run at over 45 mph for about 20 minutes after reaching full operating temperature. I would not use the car with the red light on, and if the dealer you use cannot look at the car, you might well get another dealer to do it or at least advise a course of action. Wiltshire Jaguar at Swindon are members of the club and a good independent dealer. I periodically use an additive - Plenty on the market - Diesel Magic etc that assists in keeping the DPF in good condition. Let us know how you get on. Regards, Peter.

My S type had its MOT last week and passed. I had asked my mobile mechanic to run it through a full diagnostic test --- he has the full set of equipment to do so. He did - no issues or codes came up, Cost == FREE. I think it could be worth have a Terraclean service done on your car. It is well worth the £125 or so you will have to pay. Regards, Peter.

Hi Paul, Thee are quite a few members who have blanked off the EGR valve on the X Type diesels. It does not need remapping, either. I am concluding that the garage you are using know less than me about diesel engines, and I was an accountant! I think that there have been several good You Tube videos on blanking the egr valve. I would also look for a new garage. Perhaps there are some members local to you who can advise. Regards, Peter.

Hi Paul, and welcome to the club. You haven't said which diesel engine is on your car, or the year, which would help. I did think that the x type diesels only had one EGR valve which can be blanked off without causing any problem. The part for blanking it off costs about £4. Running rough can often be helped to get better by a can of Diesel Magic or a similar additive. Regards, Peter.

Hi Jim, Having had a look around, I would say that the value would be nearer the upper amount than the lower amount. I have seen some advertised with a slightly higher mileage for around £10,000, and some for as high as £14,000. A lot depends on condition, but your Dad's car seems to have been very well looked after. A few pictures of the car would assist potential buyers. The series 3 production run ended in 1992, so their could be some interest. Regards, Peter.

Welcome to the club, RS, I have an S Type on a 07 plate and a 2.7 diesel engine - the same engine in you XF. I listened to the recording, which was very useful. Having had my car for four years I thought that you engine was a touch noisier than mine. The 2.7 diesel engine is a good engine, but is does run better on premium diesel fuel, with the occasional additive to keep its innards clean. There are plenty of additives on the market -- Millers, Wynns, and a product called Diesel Magic. You did not mention the mileage the car has done [73,350 on mine], and I did give it a Terrackean service costing about £120 when I bought it, which I did fid useful; I would try the cheap route first by using an additive, and I would reccommend Shell V Power or similar for you fuel.
