  1. I've run two Jaguars for the last 2 years, 18mths with a 2.1 V6 X-type and 6 months with an XJ6. Apart from servicing and MOT (no advisories) all I've done is replace the ignition coils in the X-type, because one had water ingress, so I did them all for peace of mind, and I've replaced one faulty parking sensor in the XJ6 (DIY). As Joe says the forum is primarily for troubleshooting so you will hear the less attractive side of Jaguar ownership most of the time, plus the diesels are well known not to be as reliable as the petrol models. It's all about history, condition and more history. Get a good one and they're as reliable as any other brand, especially if previous owners have maintained them properly. All I'd say is if I had a choice between driving my Jag's and suffering the odd niggle, or a Golf, it would be the Big Cat every time.
  2. Just wanted to say thanks for the help over the last 18 months. I chopped in my x-type for an XJ6 at the weekend. Good luck with the cars everyone, Ian
  3. Glad the misfire is sorted. Try this page http://www.parts.loc8apart.co.uk/nav/auto-part/Jaguar/X-Type/Other-Interior-Parts-and-Trim.php . There some seats and covers on there now, but they're always cropping up on fleabay. Good luck, Ian
  4. Hope it sorts the problem, Ian
  5. Hi Ben Sounds like the plugs need changing but as I said you need to check the coil packs. It's not a cheap fix but new plugs won't help if the coils need replacing. You've said it's bank 1, I think that's the bank closest to the bulkhead. Check for any signs of corrosion and maybe you can get away with replacing 3. Best of luck, Ian
  6. Hi Ben, Given the age and mileage it's possible the plugs and coils both need replacing, unless you know they've been done recently. Your diagnostic tool should narrow the problem down. There's an issue with some 2.1's where water collects in the recess around the rearward coils (cylinders 1,3&5) and can get in and corrode the plugs. It's a DIY fix if you're patient. The airbox needs to come off, the manifolds don't need to be moved, but it helps to have small hands! I had all six changed on mine in January after intermittent mis-fires and it runs really sweetly now. As for MPG on a 2.1, mines an auto and I get about 22mpg around town, but up to 35mpg on a good run. I run it on standard BP unleaded and put an additive in every 2 or 3 tankfulls, which is about 4 times a year for me. Hope this is helpful, Cheers, Ian
  7. Hello all, I have an 05 SE auto and I'm wondering isnthe wood trim always mismatched on these models? The dash trim, ashtray and door inserts all seem to be different. See photos. Has anyone changed the trim on their car? Thanks Ian
  8. Hi Rowley, I don't have a diesel x-type but my previous two cars were a Mini Cooper D and an Alfa Romeo Mito 1.6JTDM. The mini didn't suffer any DPF issues but the Alfa's DPF light used to come on regularly. The advice given to me by an Alfa specialist when the light came on was to, "drive like an angry Italian!" I was talking to the guys at Jag Auto's in Liverpool last week and in passing they said that they recommend all diesel owners take a ten minute motorway trip in 4th gear every 4 or 5 weeks to clean the filter out. Hope that's a bit of use to you, Ian
  9. Thanks Rowley, I'll keep them in mind for the future, Cheers Ian
  10. I bought a set of mats from Rimmer Bros who mainly deal with classics. They are a perfect fit and I've customised them with a couple of iron on badges. (See photo)
  11. Thanks both, I don't mind paying out for genuine replacements if they're the best solution. The set I replaced were the original ones so they seem to wear well 😀 Thanks Ian
  12. Hi, Has anyone bought replacement front mats recently? I bought some cheap ones off eBay but they won't fit over the little pegs on the carpet. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks Ian
  13. Yep, maybe we should market one I did wonder about trying some of the flexible draught excluder tape. If I do I'll report back. At the moment I'm enjoying the silence! Ian
  14. Hi All, I attached the pads as suggested at the weekend and, whilst it's not quite perfect, it's reduced the noise a lot. There's just a slight squeak when my arm presses against the rest. I'll add a few more pads just be sure but so far it's made a really big difference. Ian
  15. Hi Andrew, Many thanks for the advice and the pictures. I will get some pads and give it a go and let you know how I get on. I'll also give the hinges a quick spray. Cheers Ian
  16. Hi, Apologies if this has been addressed before but a search didn't reveal anything. Has anyone got a good cure for a creaking front armrest? Model is an SE Auto. Thanks in advance, Ian
  17. Hi, I think if you want 35mpg round town the diesels are your only option. My 2.1 V6 petrol does just 20mpg round town, and around 35mpg on a motorway run and I think the other V6's are about the same. I think next time I'll look for a Sovereign spec 3.0 petrol - insurance, road tax and MPG aren't much different to the 2.1. Personally I prefer the non-sport specs so if you go for the more traditional SE trim you get leather, wood, and quite a lot of kit. Mine rides well on standard 17" wheels, not sure about the bigger wheels and lower profile tyres. Whatever you go for get the best history and condition you can. Mines an 05, 70k miles with FSH and I've not had any issues in the 9 months I've had it. Good luck, Ian
  18. Hi, Thanks Peter, looks nice. I believe the factory fitted 'leapers' all leap to the left. I think I'll buy a pair and try them in various places before taking off the backing, Cheers Ian
  19. Hi all, I have a silver 2.1v6 SE saloon and wanted to add a 'leaping jag' badge (not bonnet mascot) somewhere on the car. Has anybody else done this? Is there room over the rear number plate or to the right of the plate? Or what about on the front wing just above or below the indicator repeater? Or should I leave well alone? I just thought it would be nice to have a classic jag badge on the car. Thanks for your help.
  20. Hi, I've an 05 reg 2.0 v6 Se Auto and when I select reverse there's a creaking sound, almost as if the brakes are still very lightly engaged, or there's some resistance against the wheel. It sounds to be coming from the rear but it's hard to tell. It happens whether I've used the hand brake or not and seemingly regardless of weather (wet, hot, cold or dry). Once moving the sound goes, and there's no hint of noise in any forward gears. the gearbox is very smooth, including the selecting of reverse. Any ideas? Is it old age or maybe some lubrication needed on bushes or similar? Thanks
  21. Hello all, Just picked up an '05 plate 2.1 V6 SE Auto and so far I'm very pleased. One thing that grates though is the gear selector knob is cracked and discoloured. I want to replace it but as the colour doesn't match the wood or leather (dark brown) trim at all I wondered if anyone had replaced with a knob from another model? Or if it's worth rubbing it down and re-varnishing/painting it? Any suggestions (apart from obvious 'knob' jokes ) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ian
