I would initially suspect an intermittently faulty spark plug Ben. They do break down under load sometimes. If not that then whatever supplies the HT to a modern petrol engined car (coil packs?).
-
The connections you need to make within the door are on the inside of the moisture barrier Russ, so no requirement to breach the moisture barrier, ergo no need for replacement.

Pleased to hear that your car is soon going to be 100% again Damon

Hi Pete, Welcome to the Jaguar Owners Club You have chosen a very fine car. I hope she gives you as much as my Jaguar gives me. In the club you will find lots of friendly and helpful people. Have fun.

Los of sat nav voice, blue tooth and cd stacker.

If Peter's solution doesn't help David, maybe there is a break in the fibre optic network. From what you've said, I would start looking at the connection in the boot for a loose connector.- 2 replies

David, I've seen several of those solar chargers in use and, while they might be fine for charging a caravan battery, there is no way, personally, I'd connect one to my S-Type. They are not designed to cope with the various different types of battery available for cars now, some of which require considerably more than a bog standard 12 volts. My present battery is a calcium based beast for example. Just my opinion, of course

I'll mention it to him when I talk to him later today.

Hi Ben, Very personal and subjective view of course but I'd stick with what you already have. I don't think bigger wheels do the X-Type any favours at all. I'm also trying to hang on to what's left of my youth Operationally, of course, the wheels might need to be bigger if you were installing larger brakes. Lower profile types will, of course, make the ride less comfortable but possibly you might not notice. I certainly did though when I drove an X-Type with 18" wheels back to back with an X-Type with 16" wheels.

I'm willing to bet it's the heater valve. Easy enough to do but expensive unless you can get a used one from a breaker or fleabay. If it is the heater valve, you might find that Denis (X Typ Den) has one.

I'd recommend Wynn's EGR cleaner Chris

I think that it can't be too long before an S-Type owner switches on the ignition and gets the horrific shock of seeing multiple failures all being reported at once. The problem is that the electronics in our cars is susceptible to firmware corruption at low voltages and as a result the car will try to "fail safe" by shutting down various systems when it detects a low voltage state. In days gone by, you'd get a warning of impending battery failure because the lights would go dim and the starter motor would make the instantly recognizable churning noise. Not so with our cars though. The first indication is when you get the heart-stopping song and dance routine on the instrument panel. Following advice, I adopted the following solution and offer it here as food for thought. I tend to put my car's battery on trickle charge once a week overnight. Since I started doing so, I've never suffered the failure routine again. Being of a generally lazy disposition though, it had to be easy I wanted a trickle charger that would condition the battery and could remain connected without any possibility of damaging the battery or associated electronics in the car. I chose a CTEK trickle charger following advice and a fair bit of research (I HATE to spend money and not get the best value). CTEK's web site Further, I wasn't keen on lifting the boot floor and messing with crocodile clips so I went for their panel socket which is a small panel fitted in the boot lining. It has a three colour flashing LED system to indicate battery condition. I've found this to be somewhat pessimistic but, rather that than the other way round. Here is a Link showing what I did with my setup. I have the luck to be able to use this in a nice warm dry garage but I know of several who just plug the output lead of the CTEK in and close the boot lid outside their house and there seems to be no problem with water getting in to the boot. No. I don't work for CTEK I'm sure there are some equally good trickle chargers made by other manufacturers but this works for me.

That's why I suggested the battery be disconnected to do a complete system reset Dave. I hope that is the solution and I know just how scary all those failures can appear.

Initially David, I'd make sure your battery is charged or use a known good one. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes (note the radio code) then reconnect. I'm initially of the opinion that you are suffering the bête noire of S-Types, which is low battery voltage. Even if you think the battery seems OK, it needs to be well up on voltage or else you will get multiple, usually unconnected failures such as those you've experienced. Fingers crossed that is the explanation. If so, you might like to follow the attached battery reset procedure. Battery reset.pdf

Probably this is what you need Tim S_Type_Handbook_MY_2007.pdf Please let me know if it what you wanted.

The glow plugs in our cars are progressive Richard, this means that they may well be in use after the car has started, depending upon what the engine management system decides would be best.

Welcome to the Jaguar Owners Club Damon I can well imagine how you felt during your test drive. I still remember my own first drive of my S-Type. Once I'd made the decision to buy, I couldn't wait to get the car to myself and see what she could do. Loads of friendly people on here and quite a fair sprinkling of people who know their stuff technically as well. I hope you find things to interest you as you look around the web-site. As Peter says, photos etc, are not compulsory

Not at all up on the petrol engines Ben, but I'd certainly endorse Jim's suggestion regarding a full service. Denis and I serviced his latest acquisition at the weekend and the difference it made to the car was astounding. We had had visions of spending £££ to cure a cold engine rough idle / smoke problem but the service solved sorted everything out. Not always the case, of course but gratifying nonetheless Nothing like knowing exactly what has been done to your car and an ideal reference from which to continue regular maintenance.

No Alan. The VACM has more functions than the X-Type and S-Type use so when fitted in one of our cars there is an unused socket, the smaller of the two that you can see in the eBay photo. You will find the extra electrical connector in the loom for the VACM which fits the larger socket. As far as I am aware there are no combined Voice / Phone modules.

As Robin says, Global opening would leave all your windows and sunroof (if fitted) open Tim. On other marques, I have heard of problems of this nature but on the S-Type, such events that I am aware of have eventually been traced to inadvertent operation of the key fob buttons. That's not to guarantee that such problems couldn't occur though. On one occasion that I can recall, it was down to the erm, lack of space in an individual's trouser pocket. There is very little recess around the key fob buttons so this is a distinct possibility in your case as well. The thing with global opening (and closing) is that once the button has been pressed for long enough to initiate the operation, the button no longer needs to be pressed for the operation to complete ie. fully open (or closed) so the button only needs to have been pressed for a couple of seconds.

I believe you're right Denis. Thanks mate

I was turning out of a junction yesterday, with the indicator going, when I decided to use Jaguar Voice to change the climate control. Did you know that the Jaguar Voice mutes the indicator click as well? Amazing

Did your module work OK Ian?

Thanks for that description Robin

My other thought David, is that the iPhone 6, especially, seems to be able to detect and not use a non Apple lead. It's just another possibility. I know my iPohne 6 kicks up a fuss when I connect it to a PC with anything other than a genuine lead.
