  1. You're not the first and you won't be the last David I have that particular t-shirt myself, although I didn't make that mistake on my Jaguar. The points I made about sensitivity to battery voltage still useful to consider though, I hope.
  2. OK, I admit it, I actually LIKE using SmartNav Now, the question is, rather than spoiling the look of the car's interior, is it possible to connect the SmartNav video output to the car's touchscreen? I'm thinking along the lines of NavTool but have no experience with that technology. Any help greatly appreciated.
  3. OK - some ideas for me to try. Thanks chaps :)
  4. The problem with these cars David is that the system monitors the supply voltage and operates safety cut outs to protect the electronics from undervolt conditions. Unlike the old days when it became increasingly difficult to turn the engine over on the starter, giving you ample warning of impending trouble. Ergo, "no indication of power loss" is an entirely possible scenario. The symptoms of a low voltage detection are varied and can include various fail lights on the instruments and disabling of the starter circuit. I have heard that an apparent total loss of electrical power is another possible symptom. The first thing I'd try is either another fully charged battery or a jump start in which case the system will detect the 13 - 14 volts from the other car and will then switch off the safety cut-outs. It's a place to start. If undervolt is the problem you might want to consider the possible need for a new battery or the occasional trickle charge using something like the CTEK charger. It is also entirely possible that, once power is restored, you'll need to go through the battery reconnection / reset procedure, the link for the document being given in this thread:- (Click directly on "Battery Reset Document) below. As an afterthought, you will need to open the boot with the key in the mechanical boot release keyhole. If you don't know where that is, it's under the boot lip towards the left hand side. The key needs to be inserted vertically upwards. Hope that helps.
  5. Well, Denis (XType Den) and I were out yesterday looking at another S-Type to add to his collection and the one we looked at had a TrafficMaster SmartNav setup in it. Here I go again... yet another modification. I blame Denis... or might it be my insatiable appetite for gadgets Mind you, I found SmartNav invaluable on previous cars so I'm sure it will be again. What a pity I cannot integrate it with my Jaguar touchscreen. The SmartNav touchscrens are nice enough, of course, it's just that I really don't want the interior to look anything other than standard so I may well end up just using the switch rather than the touchscreen. I'll have to give it some consideration when the kit arrives
  6. Finished her last radio therapy with few side effects. Unfortunately, the psychological effects have suddenly hit with a big crash. Now the long wait to see if the therapy has had the desired effect.
  7. The D2B HAS to be in a loop Alan. There is also a "correct" sequence, although I've heard it said that the sequence is not essential.
  8. Have you looped it into the fibre optic (D2B) loop Alan? If required it will need somebody with the SDD software to enable it. A dealer or indie will do this for you if you don't know anybody with the appropriate kit. Having said that, I've installed five CDCs now in S-Types and not one has required the software update. The fact that it powers up tells us the electrical wiring is OK but the system is controlled by the D2B. If you haven't looped it in, let me know and I'll send the the info you need to do it without paying a fortune for a new D2B multi-cable. Some of the CDCs are a tad sensitive to non original disks so probably worth trying an original disk (ie. not burnt from your PC) if you haven't already covered this.
  9. It may need the system to be informed that there is a CDC Alan.
  10. Steve, chassis number and VIN are the same thing.
  11. Hi Neil, Welcome to JoC They do have their little peccadillos but we love 'em. I'm sure you will get any help you need from fellow members.
  12. Thanks Joe.
  13. What is a navtool Joe?
  14. I was wondering whether anybody has considered, or even done, a conversion of the audio sat nav bluetooth touchscreen to an integrated system using a tablet based setup? I've seen it done on one or two other marques with a great deal of success.
  15. As an S-Type owner, you'll be aware (I guess) of how sensitive the electronics is to low battery voltage. You'll maybe not know though, what you're expected to do after dis-connecting and re-connecting the battery. I've put together a PDF document which takes you through the procedure step by step. Nothing that isn't readily available elsewhere but just gathered together and (in my view) logically ordered into a single reference. It also includes how to get the audio system working when you don't have the security code I've been asked for it so many times that I though I'd make a thread just for access to that document so here it is:- Battery reset.pdf
  16. ... but I was wondering whether people might think it a good idea to give a few details of their car in their signature block? I've had one or two questions recently where I could have been more specific in my answers if I'd known a bit more about the car in question? Just a thought - doesn't need to be much. Model year, engine, auto / manual maybe?
  17. Is it a diesel Colin? If so, it's a gradual vacuum loss on either brake servo or vacuum pump. Both of which are ridiculously expensive new but thankfully easily obtained second hand on fleabay. The servo will have a part number label which is visible if you lift the felt cover just under the passenger side windscreen in the engine bay. You MUST get the right part number or else it will not fit, even though it might initially look OK (Been there - got the T-Shirt). Most likely to be the servo as they are prone to contamination degrading the seals. The vacuum pump should, IIRC, produce 18 inches of mercury vacuum when working properly. If it's a petrol then it is certainly the servo unless there is a small vacuum leak in a pipe. Hope that helps?
  18. OK Peter. Thanks. I'll have another look. As you know, I changed my transmission fluid recently but interested to see the price OPIE charge as this particular fluid is ridiculously expensive.
  19. I've just tried the selector Peter and they don't seem to provide transmission fluid? Maybe I've missed it?
  20. I wish I'd known these places a few years ago. It cost me an arm and a leg to keep my Rover 75 legal. Oh well... live and learn :)
  21. Mind you, as I said above, it is a possibility so something at least to think about I have a switch concealed in the driver's door which disables the function, mainly because i sometimes have to park VERY close to a wall on the nearside, but if I thought it was going to get very cold it would be prudent to flip the switch.
  22. I actually use Gliptone to maintain the leather Peter but the scent fades after a day or so :(
  23. Thousands of cars have them fitted as standard without a problem Derek, including the later Jaguars. I appreciate the possibility but, properly maintained I'm not sure there would be a problem. I had them on my Rover 75 and that has been out in temperatures of lower than 10 degrees Celsius without them ever failing.
  24. What does anybody use to keep their Jaguar's interior smelling of leather please? I've tried the famous Glip tone hanging and underseat items and have to say I found them to be dreadful. So, any other ideas please?
