I have the same problem, a hundred or so extra revs stops it .... is it possible and has anyone adjusted the tickover to factor out the noise?

Years ago I worked at the Conoco base on Humberside. They had a gantry set from which the tankers filled up prior to delivering to the petrol stations. Tesco, Shell, Esso ... you name it, all tankers filled up at the same gantries with the same stuff from the same storage tanks. I can't vouch for practices nowadays, but while I've heard of refineries like Grangemouth ... I don't remember seeing a Tesco or Shell etc refinery, so I suspect little has changed. Go to whichever garage you like, pay as much as you like ... then prove you've just bought something 'special' I do believe the 'super' petrols have additives that might justify their claims and price, but then again, if you've just paid an extra 10p a litre you might be forgiven for thinking the engine is running better than before. All fuels have a minimum spec, which is generally what the manufacturers work to. As a motorcyclist though with a plastic tank I can tell you that the problems being experienced from increasing amounts of ethanol in petrol aren't appreciated.

As I said it's my own personal view, perhaps I stated it a tad too strongly but I didn't intend to cause offence. Apart from being an avid Jaguar fan I'm also a lifelong motorcyclist (currently Moto Guzzi Norge 1200). Many of my co riders fit HIDs to their bikes ... and report being flashed by blinded car drivers. They are fine for main beam work, but fitting them to dipped beam causes problems for other road users. So, apologies if my post came over somewhat aggressive. As for the Jag lights being weak, compared to HID's they will be, although I've found mine to be adequate .... but if faced with an oncoming HID user they make no impression whatsoever.

Personally I hate them with a passion. They're not so bad if they're fitted as standard, but aftermarket ones tend to splash light all over the place because the focal point of the reflector array is designed for the filament on a halogen bulb. Sticking a HID in the casing alters the way the lens/reflector works. It's fine for the selfish prat in the car ... not so good for everyone else coming towards him, especially on a wet night. They also produce excessive back-glare in fog. If you have a separate light unit for main beam only they're fine for that job as you're supposed to dip when there's oncoming traffic, but as we all know, there are people who have no idea the facility exists. I can think of good use for a 2kw laser cannon ... just to fire back at the idiots who fit aftermarket HID's to dipped beam.

Update. No further incidents since Sunday morning, I've deliberately not used the car to see if it misbehaved. (Nice motorbiking weather anyway). Finger's crossed.

There's nothing like that in the car .... I despise anything dangly in the car ... always took the girlfriend home first! ... even satnavs have no place on the screen in my opinion. Always laugh at those who stick the satnav in the middle of the screen .. you could hide a truck behind that. These people are in the same category as the furry dice/air freshener on the mirror and 2 years worth of old carpark tickets brigade. Not fit to be on the road.

Ta, I'll try the reboot next time it happens ... so far today it's been fine (after this morning's episode). I've set up a camera with motion detection to check if a cat/fox etc might be causing the problem (no idea how sensitive the alarms are or even if they monitor knocks etc but worth a try). Hoping it's an anomaly. Yep .. I have the radio code.

2004 xtype 2.0 diesel. I get an indicated 50 to 54 mpg depending on how late I am. The car has been serviced every year since it left the factory.

I've got a bit of a problem with the X Type alarm .. one I'd better fix soon as there are rumours of neighbours planning revenge, I've noticed curtains moving as I walk down the street, groups of angry people gathering on street corners and a large mound of wood with a central stake in it has appeared on the green ... ok, I'm dressing it up a bit but you get the idea. :P A few days ago the alarm activated after the car had been stood for about 36 hours with no problems. I went out to it thinking the worst but there was nothing, so I reset the the alarm and went inside ... sure enough about 5 minutes later it started screaming for attention again. This time I got into the car and started it, the display said the passenger door was open, it wasn't, but make sure I opened and slammed it shut again ... message cleared and no more problems. Then this morning (Sunday) at 7.00am it went off again after being stood silently for about 18 hours, this time there was no message about any of the doors being open. I've rearmed it and it's been ok for the last hour. Anyone got any ideas ? I usually lock the car using the double locking system, all windows are closed and there have been no '5 flash' error signals from the indicators on locking the car. I'm now in that uneasy position of waiting and not knowing when and if it's going to wake the dead (and those neighbours) next.

Probably, like mine it hasn't got the facility. Last week I bought a plug in Bluetooth to FM transmitter... neat unit with an LCD screen. However it came with a flexible mount between the lighter plug in and the unit head. This meant it collided with the gear stick. Cue hacksaw, soldering iron, digi meter and patience. Job done now, looks OK and sits in the recess behind the panel. I wouldn't recommend the mod to that particular unit though as it's a bit of a pain. Still, I can listen to Spotify and take calls over the radio if I want to now ... all for twenty quid.

The issue of paying for maps etc ... indeed the issue of paying for a satnav is bad for my blood presure. Now I know many of you will know about the phone apps ... but just for those who don't : I downloaded a FREE satnav app onto my smartphone (works on tablets too if you want a bigger screen). Maps are udated regularly and are free. Speed cameras locations are also free, and updated regularly. Voice instructions are clear and although the whole package might be slightly less than a £300.00 Garmin, it is perfectly functional, postcode searches, favourites, via options ... it's all there. Another app worth trying is the speed head-up display that reflects speed on the windscreen. All these things are free to download and use .. and if (like most people) you have a smartphone from when you last updated sulking in a drawer feeling sorry for itself, why not at least try and save a bit of money. There're no subscriptions if you update from your home wi-fi. I've used an 'old' Samsung S3 as a satnav for over a year with no problems at all. Be aware though ... the maps are large, 300+ meg ... so if you DO try one out make sure you're on your home network and not on the phone provider's network if you pay per meg.

I have an 05 SE .... no satnav, no CD changer and no Bluetooth for the phone. What it has got, and in my opinion far more importantly, is a complete Jaguar service record. I love the thing .. enjoy yours.

Same here ... on a 54 plate. I've had the car a fortnight and it has always said 'no phone' whenever I've pressed the button. I reckon the facility isn't fitted on my car. Strange that the handbook isn't very helpful in that respect. On the other hand .... I can't be doing with phones in cars so it doesn't matter.

I bought my x type(2004) a fortnight ago. As a matter of habit with any vehicle I buy I've run a bottle of injector/system cleaner through it. Have to say the difference on the Jag has been remarkable, smoother everywhere on the revs and pulls better too. Of course many people decry these additives, but in this instance it certainly appears I've done the car a favour.
