  1. hi earlier ones with the J gate are mainly 4.2 and some people say the 4.2 are much smoother than the later 5.0 the later pop up gear knob ones are 5.0, which has more power, esecially supercharged versions depends what you want in performance xk 4.2 n/a ar 300 bhp, xkr 4.2 sc 420 bhp, and the xk 5.0 n/a 385 bhp and xkr 5.0 sc 503bhp but its worth test driving both as the 4.2 and 5.0 do feel different as for rust, check all the underside, especially rear quarters, lower rear and lower front by the sills cheers Joe
  2. hi Just make sure your quick connectors have a inline fuse on them as close to the battery as possible as some leads dont have a inline fuse, so if you short the wires by mistake it would melt the wiring, virtualy instantly been so close to the battery cheers Joe
  3. hi on both sides on the connector theres two tabs, just squeeze sides, squeeze the widest sides and pull will be a dodgy sensor had to replace the front one on mine some pics below cheers Joe
  4. Hi Must be making them cheaper these days the service schedule on my 2004 S-type R, shows the spark plugs only need changing every 100k miles or 10 years whats does it say in the service schedule cheers Joe
  5. Hi £200 for front discs and pads is quite expensive, bet discs and pads would be less than £100 and £100 for labour for an hours work, don't sound cheap to me. I've just put discs and pads, front and rears on a peugeot gti, front and rear discs and pads cost £82 from euro cars parts and still took less than an hour to fit. car parts have never been so cheap for cars cheers Joe
  6. hi never seen a low battery cause items to stay on but worth putting the battery on charge over night also worth checking the front and rear body modules are dry, especially one in boot, as they can suffer with water getting in the boot area, and damp will cause all sorts of problems. also any damp in the car, check front and rear foot wells are dry. the shifting from park, could be a switch or relay, but also again low battery, when you sit in the car, with foot brake pressed, if you move the gear stick to the left, you can usually here a click, relay, down by the right side of the dash, there a micro switch on the gear stick, which is prone to failing in something is spilt on it, like pop, goes very sticky when it dries. cheers Joe
  7. hi the kit I have is a universal one that does all cars if you look on ebay for universal wind back tool theres quite a few basically theres two holes in the piston, they have to be rotated and pushed in,once the piston is wound back the new pads will fit, I wind the piston back out till the caliper just slides over the new pads, makes the handbrake adjustment a lot easier the tool not required depending on what tools you have, if you have some large, bent nose, circlip pliers, they will slot in the holes on the piston and allow you to wind them in cheers Joe Video here off youtube, its a X-type but piston wind back is very similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhtL2_uRgXU mine looks similar to this, which are under £20, but I use it a lot.
  8. hi if its for general driving, most of the discs and pads available from euro car parts are quite good, have used euro car parts many times and never had any issue, plus you get a choice of brands and get 40% off most weekends if you like putting you foot down, I'd stick with standard discs and get some better pads, I use ebc redstuff in my S-type R, better stopping and next to no dust drilled and grooved discs are ok, but, I've had them before and there quite noisy, first thing in the morning if the have been wet, due to light surface rust and a lot noisier under heavy braking, drilled ones are quieter. for next to no diffence in stopping power, just faster pad wear, so because of the noise I would never fit them again. just make sure what ever you get, just measure you discs first to makes sure you getting the right ones, as theres quite a few different sizes. also if you have a electronic parking brake, there a precedure to release the brakes, you also need a piston wind back tool for the rear, fronts are straight forward. if you want read the workshop manuals there all here free http://www.jagrepair.com/ cheers Joe
  9. hi I assume you have checked the propshaft rubber couplings, as they can have similar effects also when you changed the oil, did you use genuine zf parts and oils, zf lifeguard 6, cheaper oils can cause all sorts of problems when they mix with the old oil, about 6 litres stays in and cant be drained, can sometimes be caused by gearbox software, can be fixed with a update, also it will need adaptations reset and gear shifts need to be relearnt after a oil change because it can be a lot thicker if its not been replaced for some time, the two man relearn procedure, as used by jaguar, can get the shifts really smooth if none of that fixes it, then its the mechatronics valve body, usually worn seals, o-ring and lots of little check valves, this is cured by fitting a sonnax kit, which replaces all the moving parts and cures low oil pressures in the valve body these gearboxes are pretty tough, used in 1000's and 1000's of cars, like jaguar, land rover, citroen, ford, vw, bmw, maseratis, bentleys and lots more. cheers Joe
  10. hi very common, once the nicads fail in the sounder, you just get nuisance problems with the alarm going off cheers Joe
  11. Whats up with your headlights?
  12. hi what the irreparable damage, you can strip the headlights and change most parts otherwise ebay the chrome hid ones go a lot cheaper than the black S-type R ones cheers Joe
  13. As above, battery every time they need to be a good battery on these, any working inside the car and ignition on, will soon flatten the battery real quick if the battery low, it puts modules in fault, need to get the battery on charge, ideally over night cheers Joe
  14. hi its either cd or cassette you dont often see cassete decks, thats whay there no cd you could swap the cassette deck for the single cd in the dash, cheap on ebay, plug and play, make sure it comes with the code cheers Joe
  15. goodyear eagle f1, great all rounders.
  16. HI Post a pic of your dash not enough info do you have lcd dash or touch screen, cd and cdc buttons are next to each other cd player came as standard, cd changer was optional, cheers Joe
  17. HI P0171 AND P0174 are usually lean codes, air leaks between engine and maf, so a split pipe or perished hose check all those little hoses, lots of garages have smoke machines that fills the inlet system and you can then visably see where it leaks from cheers Joe
  18. hi there a produre to de-air it, you usually need to do it cold, with ignition on they have a aux pump that assists when the engine is idling cheers Joe for proper filling and bleeding workshop manuals are here http://www.jagrepair.com/
  19. hi there plenty of official icarsoft sellers on ebay, v3 is better has more features the icarsoft cr pro is also very good and works with all manuafacturers and comes with lifetime updates cheers Joe
  20. Hi As mentioned above the spec is WSS-M2C913-B and 5w30 theres plenty about like castrol edge or shell helix ultra or fuchs super syn oil are all great oils shell is most probably the cheapest and if it were my diesel I'd change it twice a years, due to the issues of these engines. for peace of mind also keep an eye on oil level, if it goes up, theres possibly diesel getting in there from either leaky injector or blocked dpf's, diesel in the engine oil, leads to snapped crank. I use castrol edge professional 5w30 C1 in my S-type R, its had it from new, its not cheap, but my engine is still like new, never uses a drop of oil and its so quiet for a 18 year old car. best having a look round for best prices, but try on ebay, opie oils, my-tyres, euro car parts have great deals as certain times. cheers Joe
  21. hi you definately have some issue there, the 2.5 has most probably the worst fuel consumption, but thats quite bad I can easily get 35 mpg out of my S-type R on a motorway with cruise on worth checking for fuel leaks, but would of thought you would smell any sort of fuel leak cheers Joe
  22. HI, The beauty of these there easy to use and user friendy, very handy to keep in the car you cant do everything IDS/SDD can but are great for every day use cheers Joe

  24. hi the exhaust pipe is usually a corrugated metal pipe that splits and lets the smoke in the engine bay, rather than away from the car the corrugated pipe can be bought on ebay and replaced, which should cure it cheers Joe
