hi if its the ZF 6HP26, you need special oil, it has to be ZF Lifeguard 6 you can't use normal ATF the TCM for the gearbox, is actually inside the gearbox, submersed in oil, using the wrong oil will damage it also the gearbox holds nearly 11 litres of oil, dropping the sump/filter will only drop about 6.5 litres ,the rest stays inside the Torque converter, so mixing oils is also not a good idea thanks joe ZF - TechServiceMan.pdf ZF6HP26_Transmission.pdf

hi from that fault sound like the solenoid is faulty according to the code open circuit, there different colors you need to find out which one it is I take it its the ZF 6HP26 also the solenoids can be changed by just removing the sump/filter removing the sump/filter will also give you a idea of the condition, if oil is clean they can be bought off ebay individual or in sets, either genuine or aftermarket cheers Joe

Buying s type s avoiding pitfalls and problems
JOE-DOT-COM replied to Gazbo's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
hi if you use the search bar, this is quite a common question and always pops up most important sills, sills can completely rot away, there hidden under a plastic cover, so cant be seen easily, but if the rear arches have bubbles, there most likely the sill are gone, as in completely gone, don't matter what year, there completely random check for knocking and banging from the suspension, theirs loads of suspension bushes front and back, if driven hard these can fail, should be silky smooth drive check all tires are worn even, uneven Tyre wear usually means worn bushes or rear tie rods front and rear doors, check front and rear vertical seam on the inside of the door, they start to corrode first there, looks like spiders under the paint where the seam sealer is, front of front door is hidden under a plastic trim, this just pulls off and slides up out of the way check every thing works all the electrics, check abs, engine management, air bag lights, light up on the dash and go out, seen lots of these led's removed or taped over check fuse box and boot well for water, they leak in around the rear lights and can cause fuse box, rear reverse module and other modules to fail. check all the keys supplied fit and work on the car, because its got a second key, dont assume it fits and works ifs it got electronic parking brake, test it at least a dozen times, these also fail regular also use a app like "VEHICLE SMART" which will give you its old mot history and advisories, lots of corrosion advisories is usually a bad sign, also you can check all its old mot mileage history on the same app take it for a good run and let it idle for a good while, some are known to have overheating issues, with faulty thermostats, clogged radiators or even failed head gaskets service history is always nice as well, looked after examples will all ways come with a pile of receipts its also worth checking the headlights as well,if there normal halogen, then you can adjust the height of the beam on the dash, operate the switch and make sure they go up and down, the adjuster inside go brittle and break, you can buy replacement adjuster, but you have to remove the bumper, to remove the headlights, if its got HID lights, when you switch the ignition on, the lights go up and down and then self level, every time you switch the ignition on, adjusters in these also fail and if you unplug the headlights with the battery connected, you need jaguar software to reset them and they wont self level till they are reset also worth checking the oil level, check its under, not well over, diesels have a tendency as they get older, get leaky injectors, that can weep when the engine not running , seep past the rings and raise the engine oil level if I was looking I would also only buy a completely standard one, chipped ones offer more power, the standard unit is plenty powerful enough and tuned ones are known to snap crankshafts cheers Joe -
Hi The 5 amp one is plenty good enough for keeping it charged and tip top the Genuine Jaguar one is only a 3.8 amp and Ive never had any issues with mine, keeps it spot on all year round cheers Joe

hi the gearbox is sealed and the j-gate is inside the car, so would not of thought it been wet or damp I know the the cable can come lose between j-gate and gearbox, but what usually happens is the corresponding light does not light up on the j-gate could be a few things really, other common things, like sticky j-gate interlock, your not suppose be able to move it from park without pressing the brake, if you can the interlock may be stuck out, disabling starting, but I think this can be over ridden by pressing the brake and then it should start see how you go cheers Joe

hi if you have a multi meter you need to check what battery leakage you have, the current drain when every thing is off also the car is suppose to go asleep after 40 mins, this can be stopped some times from a faulty device, like the ignition switch, theres a flap that shuts once you pull the key out you could connect a multi meter in series with the battery and see what the current drain is and pull fuses till it drops to a correct level may be worth also checking your battery is charging correct, should be above 14 volts with engine running, alternator might of packed in current drain should be as below cheers joe

Hi Best out there is a Mongoose lead and Jaguar IDS/SDD, can be bought from place like British diagnostics, you can everthing jaguar can, it will talk to every module on the car, about £100 the next best is Icarsoft I930 or LRII, this will talk to some modules, but not every thing, but is the most comprehensive one out there, about £120 to £150 if you have a touch screen, you can enter a hidden menu and read any engine fault codes and clear them, but with this hidden menu there a nav update button, which a lot of people seem to press and you have to press it twice, theres a confirmation action, this needs special software and on pressing it, will clear the nav units software and you end up with just a black screen, but for reading fault codes when your out and about is great, as you can read them before turning your engine off, as the faults sometime clear when the ignition is cycled the jaguar ids/sdd is a superb diagnostic tool, you can read all live data and on certain ecu's like the STR there also a built in data logger, where engine sensors, gear box sensors and a lot more is logged and is accessible I also occasionally use a cheap bluetooth elm type unit, cheap as chips about £5 and app like "torque pro", paired to my phone to monitors short and long term fuel trims, to find faults, this is handy as it works on almost every car. cheers Joe

Keeps asking for system pin everytime I start the car
JOE-DOT-COM replied to Tech.Advice's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
Hi Its worth checking if your battery charging if the battery is low, the voltage might get low enough to cause a problem on the stereo it also might be worth checking your fuses as well, theres 2 feeds to the stereo, a permanent and a switched feed, if you have lost the permanent feed, it wont remember the pin cheers Joe -
hi Id have the clutch done, at a guess they never put a new one in, they last many years, Ive never known one fail after 12 months the last couple of clutches Ive changed, were due to going stiff or thrust bearing fail, never had one slip should only cost £300 to £500 for a new clutch kit, fitted, I'd phone around cheers Joe

Exhaust back box - I think it rusted through
JOE-DOT-COM replied to Beulahjag's topic in Jaguar S-Type Club
hi It depends how loud you want it, if you like it nice and quiet, leave it alone, unfortunately the V6 does make the same noise as the V8, so with rear silencer deletes its quite loud and does drone on used ones are the cheapest if you find a good pair stainless ones will set you back about £300 to £500, depending on what make you go for either will offer you no extra performance cheers Joe -

hi on the wheeler dealer video, he disconnects the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator the vacuum line alters the fuel pressure slightly, so when the car idles the fuel pressure is slightly lower the return fuel line is still connected the fuel pressure regulator will still lift on over pressure, anywhere from 35 to 45 psi if the machine runs a 50 psi or greater all the excess will go back to the tank trust me I know some one who does it ask any body who has had it done if they notice any difference after a few weeks cheers Joe get some of this does the exact same

Hi I would'nt use it in my car if you have ever seen a cylinder head apart, it takes some serious scrapping to remove carbon deposits, or have a look at a EGR valve, it takes some serious elbow grease to get the carbon off and you think a additive in the fuel, will clean it, there proven video's on the valve gear photographed before and after and there no difference but I can tell you how the car performs better after and how the emissions are lower when they do the process they use two canister of fuel/cleaner, they plumb the machine to the fuel rail and pull the fuse for the fuel pump, so the engine runs off the fuel in the machine two canister of fuel has got to be over 2 liters, yet to burn 2 liters of fuel would take quite a while, but the process does not take that long, if the machines fuel pressure is set higher than the car fuel pressure regulator, then the access pressure would be sent back to the tank , adding there fuel to your tank, any octane boost added to the fuel, will make marked difference in performance and it will even drop the emission a good bit a modern engine is designed to burn 100% of the fuel, other wise the cats get hot and get damage, so if the fuel burns how is Terra clean going to clean it and if it does disturb any carbon where's is going to go ?, stuck on a valve seat, stuck in the cat if it actually works, why don't manufacturers recommend it cheers Joe

Hi Petrol 5.0 V8 Supercharged every time, For me any way. but if your looking at diesels, then the 2.2 going to be better on fuel, if thats your thing, but its not going to be refined as the 3.0, but the 3.0 is a v6 , so its going to be a lot smoother and have much more power, road tax might be quite higher on the 3.0 as well. personally I'd go with the 3.0, https://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/jaguar/xf/saloon-2008/22d-163bhp-luxury-4d-auto/road-test/54728/ https://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/jaguar/xf/saloon-2008/30d-v6-s-luxury-2011-4d-auto/road-test/51594/ cheers

Hi Caliper hand brake cable arm can go stiff putting extra load on epb motor, slider pins are for foot brake mainly, modules can go, but if it's working it not usually this and the module may need reprogramming to the can if a new one is fitted, best way is to get jaguar software plugged in and it will tell you the exact fault, saves any quess work, which ends up cost more in the long run, cheers
-
Hi If you search epb loads come up, this must come up every week Most common when your battery gets low You need to plug in with jaguar software will tell you the exact fault Going to be either a low battery, stiff hand brake cables, when the rubber boots perish they get wet and freeze this time of year, faulty epb motor or stiff calipers Software will tell you exact fault, epb monitors position of parked and released, motor current, if these are not correct, then it faults, battery disconnect usually cures it, unless fault still there Cheers Joe
