Hi I'd start in the engine bay, its going to be a crankcase breather or rocker cover breathers, there usually piped into the air box or induction pipework, so the engine burns them at a guess either a hose has perished or come off, then the vapours/smells are being sucker in by the heater vent with the engine warm and running you should be able to either see it or smell it, if you cant find it, get some damp start and spray it in area around the engine bay, when you find the right area, the damp start will cause the revs to raise, so you know your in the right area cheers Joe

Hi Ian Looks like you have something faulty Its either going be a visit to a auto electrician or if you handy with a multimeter you can find it yourself you need connect your meter in line with the battery and put it on ameter mode and monitor the amps/current then start pulling fuses till the current/amps drop, start with anything after market thats been added I had a similar fault on my car and it ended up been a tracker in the left hand side of the boot, did not know it was there and no paper work came with car, its backup battery had failed over the years and was causing a large drain on the car battery also check all the modules in the boot and fuse box for water damage, common fault on the s-type's, which can cause a drain try keeping the car on a battery charger/trickle charger to prevent further damage to the battery and other modules, low battery voltages can cause errors and damage cheers Joe

  10. Hi If you have the later touch screen, you can bring up engine fault codes on that But you can get a generic code reader for under 30 pounds, that will read engine fault codes Cheers Joe
  11. hi you can fold the mirrors by hand, whether there power fold or not if there power fold, make sure the mirror selector is in the middle position and press the mirror joystick at the bottom/6 oclock position cheers Joe

Hi I have a S-type R with a space saver and I think there terrible, having no spare wheel is worse so I bought a full size alloy and much prefer it, peace of mind you could take off one of your wheels and see if it will fit in the boot, if it does have a look on ebay see if you can find the same alloy for a spare cheers Joe

Hi If it worked for 4 days, then its looks like it a voltage fault, check the battery voltage, I bet the voltage gets lower and lower you must have a large battery drain, charge the battery overnight and if it cures it for a few days, then its got to be a drain, if you say its charging ok, if it only used for short trips the alternator wont be able to fully charge itself on short trips you need to check with a meter what sort of drain there is on the battery, also check for anything obvious like boot light stuck on, interior light stuck, maybe the rears or glovebox, has it got a tracker, there usually battery backed up and when the backup battery fails will put a large drain on the battery. only way to tell for sure is to monitor the battery drain current with a multi meter to see if there is anything with excessive drain cheers Joe

Hi Favorite and top of the list, battery, check battery voltage a low battery will cause all these problems, even more on a diesel, if the battery is on its way, or battery not being charged correct, when you switch the ignition on, the glow plugs will suck a big chunk of the battery, then starting it will more than likely drop it below 12v, causing an array of faults It may be charging, but the battery is not holding the charge, once you attempt to start the car, the voltage will drop and cause all the faults and until you fully charge the battery and disconnect it, it wont clear the faults If it were mine, If the battery is older than 3 years, replace the battery, if its newer than 3 years, charge the battery overnight, then disconnect the battery for 30mins, to clear the faults, the reconnect and start the car this is one of the most common problems on the jaguars, more so on diesels as they drain so much more power than a petrol on starting cheers Joe

HI I Know its a right pain But a lot of manufactures do it, its the shape of cars and fitting it all in I suppose, poor design really but the HID bulbs are suppose to last much, much longer than a normal bulb but saying that, with the right tools, both bulbs can be changed in just under an hour, been there done it I wonder how much Jaguar charge to replace a bulb, think jaguar charge about £45 for the bulb and labour on top. you can get 2 genuine osram D2S bulbs off ebay for £25, and 2 unbranded ones for less than a tenner, cheers Joe

Hi they do but, they put very little into the battery maplin do a few, one is 5 watt, which is a descent size, some are 2 watt or 4 watt, If we go with the bigger one 5 watt that at full power will do 0.41 amps, that would be in good sun, so in dull weather, would hardley do much at all cheers Joe

  21. Hi Maplin do a few solar chargers, that you connect direct to the battery pop the solar panel in the rear parcel shelf and connect to the battery But, in this country, there useless most of the year and only charge well when its in good sun cheers Joe

Hi I go the Jaguar Heritage motor museum regular, Its a good event The first Saturday in every month is the jaguar breakfast club and when its sunny you get a good turn out of jaguars, also if you go in the heritage museum , if you save your ticket, you can go back in as many times as you want for the next 12 months. well worth it, I will be going as many as i can There's loads of really special cars there, odd ones, and many jaguar and landrovers, last off the productions lines cheers Joe

Hi Its much better to use a smart charger like a CTEK, much better long term keep the battery connected, using a smart charger, that charges the battery, then turns off, monitors the voltage, then charger kicks in again to top up, this what a smart charger does, not a cheap trickle charger, that never goes off basically and boils the battery dry long term leaving ecu's and control modules un-powered for long periods of time can cause capacitors to fails inside them, causing the ecu or module to fail, when you turn the key off various electronics and modules stay powered up in like a standby mode, this stops various components failing like capacitors, I'd say 99 percent of electronics that fail in a car, will be down to capacitor failure, due to heat and being powered down cheers Joe

Hi battery on a petrol car should last at least 5 years but batteries usually fail early due to other faults, such as poor charging, high standby drain currents/faults and incorrectly wired accessories/add ons on a diesel its a different story, but I've known car parts places to give 4 year warranty on a petrol car battery and then only 12 months warranty on a diesel, for the exact same battery if you use a smart charger like say a CTEK or similar, I recently replaced the battery on my mitsubishi, a Bosch asia silver, that lasted just over 11 years, so a smart charger really can extend the life of a car battery I use a CTEK on my Jaguar also and you can tell the difference, especially as there so many electronic now a days, that really are voltage sensitive, for some reason the s-type's and x-type, both share a lot of accessories and modules, seem especially sensitive to voltage drop and cause lots of errors when the battery gets low AGM batteries now, seem to be a lot better, they hold there charge much better than a lead acid or a sealed for life type. cheers Joe
