  1. So I'm nearing my first year of owning one of these lovely cars and decided to list what I've gone through in the hope it can help someone, like some of you have helped me. Reggie is a 2002 X Type, 2.1 V6 with the weirdest options on one of these cars I've ever seen. I've never seen one like it. Firstly, when I got "Reggie" he wasn't in the best of health. The sump seal had gone and there was a rather annoying oil leak. Halfords fixed this for about £130. Secondly I went to get the tracking done, only to find that the previous owner had put tyres for a Nissan Qashqai on it. I had wondered why it was juddering around corners! So a full set of tyres went on. Next came an incident where someone smashed into the front wing. Replaced for £65 with the right colour code from an Ebay breakers who were brilliant. Then there was the juddering problem that got worse and worse. My back street mechanic kept telling me it wasn't the spark plugs and kept doing engine flushes. In the end I went to Jag Tech in Nottingham who are quite frankly superb. It turns out it was the spark plugs. Apparently small time mechanics don't like doing spark plugs on these due to the time it takes to get the air intake manifold off. However there is a trick of the trade where you can apparently get to them through the gap between the windscreen and the bonnet. Unfortunately they didn't want to tell me how exactly lol. Next came the most annoying problem. THE ALARM! It kept going off so I was forced to disconnect the battery every time I locked up, which is a pain. In the end I narrowed it down to the rear door lock on the passenger side. This should be an easy job but it is in fact incredibly fiddly. The most annoying aspect is trying to fit the little clip for the door handle, which is done blindly in the corner of the door. If you can, get a mechanic to do it. I have also switched the original CD player for an original tape deck. This might seem like a downgrade but it allows me to use my phone with a cassette adapter and keep the original looking stereo. I also tried fitting in a touch screen double din unit, however due to ducting at the rear of the unit, it wouldn't fit. You can only use low profile double din units or a single din fitted at the bottom. If I can help anyone with any of the above issues don't hesitate to respond. So that's my year with Reggie. Apart from the above issues, on the whole it's been rather enjoyable. He's great to drive, looks pretty stylish and great for lolloping about on country roads. As for my next task I'm looking for some waist seals for the rear doors to try and keep the water out!.
  2. I needed to get my front N/S wing replaced about a year ago and this breakers on Ebay was brilliant. They specialise in Jags and have thousands of parts in stock. Here's a link to them. Hope that helps. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=autoreserveparts&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313.TR5.TRC2.A0.H0.Xx+type+grille.TRS0&_nkw=x+type+grille&_sacat=0

  4. Update. Considered doing this myself but due to the lack of a proper drive or garage (I have to make do with a designated parking space in a car park) I decided to let my mechanic do it. Glad I did. He seemed to have some issues with the bolts. A couple had sheered and needed to be drilled out. All sorted now for the not so princely sum of £67 for a matching front wing and £40 to fit it; so a very happy bunny. New profile picture added with the wing facing. It was raining and a bit dark though. I also had him give it a quick check over while it was there. Everything else is actually fine and the whining noise I was whining about is nothing to worry about apparently. It seems to be just my bat hearing and car noise paranoia deceiving me. His words were basically "I can't believe how good nick this car is in, considering the age and how much you paid chap!" I'm actually feeling a little bit smug now. Now I can relax and finally enjoy this very pretty little car, and hopefully take it to some club events next year. :)
  5. Hey Kenny, Thanks for the advice. Just gone to do it and found that my wheel winder thingy seems to be missing. Also as I only have a space in a car park where I live there's not much room so getting my mechanic to do it instead. He's also going to sort the whirring out too which he believes is a wheel baring. Hopefully that will be the end of it for this car for a while ☺
  6. Hello all. My month of woe just keeps getting worse it seems. I've had a moron smash my front passenger side wing whilst parked at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex Monday night. Does anyone know of a video, guide or have any advice on how to take the old one off and fit a new one? I've just ordered an identical one on fleabay so I was hoping to save a few quid and attempt this little job myself. Thanks in advance.
  7. Long overdue update. It seems the juddering issue has largely gone. A drive to Essex and back with Redex in the tank seems to have cleared the majority of the crap in the system. It does the odd judder now and then but I can live with it for a bit. The other mechanical issue is the whining noise that gets louder depending on speed (nothing to do with acceleration). I'm guessing it's the gearbox and it might just need the transmission fluid changing. It's 13 years old and done 95k so the make up of the fluid has probably started to break down. It's a manual and I've been told that it shouldn't do that in a manual but it's got to give some time surely? A quick trip to Jagtech in Nottingham should get to the bottom of it. On a not so nice note, I've had a moron smash into the front passenger side wing whilst parked in M&S Lakeside car park in essex. Luckily I've sourced a replacement wing on fleabay in the exact colour so should be a straightforward swap. I'll put up a new post for advice on fitting that separately. I'm just starting to feel that this car is cursed. :(
  8. Hi Claws, Thanks for your suggestions. I've booked it in for new plugs, a manifold clean and new transmission and clutch fluid tomorrow. Fingers crossed that's it. In regards to noises, there is no noise when it decides to judder, but there is a faint whirring noise when driving that wasn't there when I bought it. I think it's the gear box so transmission fluid change should sort that (hopefully). Oddly enough after I went to the garage to book it in, I sat in the car park and left it running while I was sorting something on my phone. Once I left, the temp gauge was in the middle (usually sits a couple of mil to the left of it) and it worked perfectly. I did a junction and back on the M1 and it was fine. I got back near home and the temp had dropped to just below half and I got the odd judder again. Most annoying! Why is it I can see this car bankrupting me? Thanks again for your help.
  9. Oh also, this car idles fine and you can rev the engine with no issues. The problem on occurs when driving.
  10. Hi guys. I posted about a week ago in the newbie forum when I joined and mentioned this same problem. I bought an X type about 3 weeks ago, 2.1 V6 manual. When I bought it, everything seemed fine but the oil level was really high. When I got it back home in Nottingham a few days later, I noticed an oil leak. I checked the oil level which was low, so topped it up to the right level. I checked it a couple of days later and the oil level was over. Not by much so I chose to ignore it. The dip stick on this car has a severe kink in it so I've come to the conclusion I need to ignore it. When I got back I started to feel the car juddering, first only when cold and at lower speeds, but now also at higher speeds and when the engine gets warm. As per the suggestions on my last post about the fuel system, I put in Redex and went on a drive to York and back to run it through. It got worse so took it to Halfords (no one else would fit it in on the day) for them to check it over. They told me the oil was SEVERELY overfilled and so did an oil change, replaced the sump gasket which was leaking, and flushed the fuel and oil system. It was still juddering but was told by halfords to expect it as there would be oil in the inlet manifold that would need to be burnt off. I took it to F1 yesterday to get the wheel alignment done as that was out and it was grinding when on a sharp corner. I then got told that my car had the wrong tyres on it and that they were for a Nissan Qashqai!!!! These have now been changed but I'm hoping it's not caused damage to the car. I've gone out in it tonight, hoping the juddering wouldn't be so bad as it should be getting better. I got down the road and got lots of juddering. I then got constant severe juddering on one part of the road and the engine management light flashing at me. I pulled over and the light flashed at me for 30 seconds before going off. I continued driving and there was an improvement but still with the odd judder. The engine light has never come on before so this is definitely not getting better, it's getting worse. I am getting really REALLY concerned about this now. I need to drive to Essex on Thursday and I'm now dreading the idea of this car breaking down on the M1. If anyone has seen this before or who knows what this is, I would really appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance. David
  11. Thank you for your kind welcomes Peter and Kenny. Funnily enough I had bought some Redex yesterday for my second fill. I think I'll go for a long drive down the M1 tomorrow, work the Redex through the system, and see if that does the trick with the juddering. As for the temperature gauge, I'm glad to hear mines actually rather normal. I was comparing it to my last car, which would get to temperature after just a couple of miles. I think I was just a bit shocked by the difference. Out of interest, does the club have any events or meets organised in or around Nottingham or the East Midlands? It would be nice to attend and get involved somehow. Thank you both again. I greatly appreciate it. David
  12. Hello everyone, My name's David and I very recently bought my first Jaguar; a 2002 X Type, 2.1 V6 manual. Everything was fine for the first couple of days but I then noticed it juddering when accelerating, mainly when cold and more noticeable at lower speeds and revs. I've scoured the Internet and it seems people seem to have this issue more when the engines warm rather than cold, which has left me somewhat baffled. It's also worth noting that the temperature gauge isn't showing the car warming up very quickly. I did 7 miles yesterday of juddery driving before the gauge hit the right temperature. It's been getting worse since I noticed it. The car has a full history so it's been looked after, the last service was 6000 miles ago / 9 months ago. I'm thinking of cleaning the maf sensor and changing the sensor that detects the engine temperature to see if that helps. Any other suggestions would be great. Thank you all in advance, David
