Jag newbie - looking to buy X type Estate
Tigger replied to Halo in Reverse's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
Nice one Mick, 2009 model sounds great and that model had significant upgrades/mods over pre 2007. you will have the new 6 speed auto on that model (straight shift) which according to reports is solid, my car has the 5 speed 'J' gate which has an oil change every service, and doesn't cause me any problems so far lol. I believe the timing chains on the 2.2 are very reliable (check with Jaguar dealership) however there is an auxiliary belt that should be changed at 100k (again check with dealership to confirm) cheers And -
Jag newbie - looking to buy X type Estate
Tigger replied to Halo in Reverse's topic in Jaguar X-Type Club
Hi Mick, see below I posted on a different thread, my 2.5 is just gorgeous, I drive it pretty sensibly with the odd blast now and again and get around 27 urban and 37mpg on a run, I do around 5k per annum.just ask if you need to know more and I will do my best to answer, cheers. Hi , my first X Type was from new 2004 (54) 2.0d sport estate, a superb car with over 200k on the clock when I parted with it 6 years later, I now have a 2.5V6 AWD SE auto saloon. These are superb vehicles and very reliable, the main things that went on the estate were rear bushes and bearings (around 50k intervals) and I did have to have the compressor and associated services on the air con replaced at around 160k ( I leave mine on all the time) the car was serviced on the dot with Jaguar and only needed the usual components replaced as you would expect, I had no trouble with rust of any sort although the polycarbonate head light lenses were showing their age when I sold it. The interior was quite remarkable (cream leather) and only had slight signs of wear at 200k but I was fussy about keeping it cleaned regularly, I do think the interiors on Jags are very hard wearing so if you see a tatty one, it's had a hard life. I guess if I'm offering any advice it would be, full service history (previous bills if poss), MOT (inc previous) checks on outstanding Finance, stolen or accident damaged, outstanding speed fines or history with the police (the AA can do this for £19.99 and it's a very comprehensive report) interior and exterior condition ( if it looks a bit rough walk away) check everything electric inc the air con. Go on a long test drive to see if anything sounds or feels not as it should ( good ones will feel planted on the road without squeaks rattles or bearing rumbling noises coming from the drive train, the engine should start ok from cold and be smooth after 5 mins (never had any problems with mine cold starting even after 200k) check for any excessive smoke from the exhaust, no warning lights on the dash inc engine management light. T I think that just about covers it and as I said, I have been very happy with the X Type a solid quality vehicle that looked after well will go on and on. if there's anything you need to know more than mentioned, just give me a shout. good luck A -
Hi Henry, you are clearly a very talented guy, that refurb looks awesome. You will be very handy to know ! quick question, the black plastic fillets fitted to the rear of the arch, are they an item you can fit to all Jags or specific to the Xk? Cheers And

I was 40 when I bought my first Jag, a brand new Xtype 2.0d sport estate in metallic black with Ivory leather, I'm now 52 and on my second one. I was bitten by Jaguar at the tender age of 5 believe it or not, some very good friends of my parents bought a new E type convertible in black with black interior, my Dads friend took my dad and I for a spin, I was sitting on the folded roof with dad holding onto my legs as we sped through the town on a very hot day (those were the days!!) that memory has stayed with me ever since and I promised myself I would own one one day. The reason it took so long to get one was darn companies forcing me to drive boring German company cars !! Still Im on my second one now so alls well :))) pic of Tigger

If it were me........I would not even consider trading that car for another one, it oozes charisma and is a stunning looking car. the provenance sounds water tight, you might struggle to better it without spending a very large sum of money to be honest. Just my opinion. good luck with your decisions.

Hi Sue, i agree with Peter, it's not an old car in modern day terms and you know all its little foibles. swapping it might buy you problems potentially. My X type is 10 years old and is in low mileage concours condition with a private plate, I have had an offer recently well in excess of its true value due to the condition, but there is no way I'm selling it, doesn't mean I won't buy another Jag if I need a bit a change in the future , just depends how attached you are to it really. can you post a pic of your car, don't think I've seen copper black, sounds like a great colour combination with the ivory interior. regards A

Hi Steve and welcome, From my limited knowledge and as far as I'm aware, there is no LED bulb conversion that can fit into an existing OEM headlight cluster, new cars with LED set up have a matrix of bulbs to point in different directions as no single LED is capable of giving the correct and safe spread of light on the road, LED's are forward directional (like a torch beam) and do not have the spread of light like a standard bulb, projector lights like those in the X Type rely on a special lense in front of the standard bulb to project light on to the road but aren't that good although manufacturers use the design to save space I guess. There are various aftermarket HID headlight conversion kits around that can use existing OEM light clusters, but, I would shy away from converting, unless they are specific to your car, the wrong or generic choice could leave you blinding on coming road users (as we've all seen with young lads in their hatchbacks) . if you are looking at converting other smaller bulbs , sides, interior etc, go for good quality with a resistance circuit built in, this will ensure you don't get any error messages. LED's draw far less power from your cars battery/ system than standard bulbs and thus the car will assume the bulb has blown so the need for resistors to be built into the bulb to con the cars system. i have converted my Xtype's projector bulbs from standard to H1 night breakers and it has been a vast improvement, so you could look at reviews on upgrade bulbs for your existing clusters and go from there, Google autobulbs direct , they cover everything that's on the market and have reviews as well. as I said, I have limited knowledge on this subject and I'm sure the guys on here will advise otherwise if such a conversion exists, but I don't know of one Cheers Andrew

This is interesting, guys I have bought off Mytyres many times before as very competitive, however, I'm not far off needing a new set of Pirelli 225 45 17's assimetrico's, £86 per corner from mytyres and compared with Kwikfit listed at £75 per corner fitted ! Could be something to do with the exchange rate at present, so will be looking around when the time comes.

You're welcome, Paul no trouble, give these guys a call http://www.jagbreakers.com/ I'm sure you could pick one up for a fraction of the cost if you need to. cheers Andrew

Hi Paul, ahh never mind was worth a shot. The door micro switch is located within the door lock assembly, now the only way to access it is to remove said unit from the door and go from there. Not sure how you are set up to have a look at doing this yourself, but the unit to buy is around £150.00 plus labour, your local garage could do the ness electrical checks on the unit to fault find so 200 ish would be the worst case scenario I'm guessing. Oh how I wish they were the old school type located in the door frame, couple of screws and job done for a fiver. sorry it's not great news. let me know how you get on. cheers Andrew
-
Paul, had a rethink, can you try something, get in the car and press the overhead interior light switch and hold for a few seconds, had a chat with someone today who thought the interior light system just needs a reset. Cheers
-
Hi Paul, sounds like the internal contacts on the door switch may have broken down or got a bit dirty, but unlikely to be a fuse as you say the other doors and the fob activate the courtesy lights, should be an easy swap out for the old one and not expensive or remove and give a squirt of WD 40, If it's not something you would tackle yourself then the garage can put a meter on the door switch contacts to check first before replacing.
-
Ahh ok, that's pretty much where it should be, so prob not the stat, see if you can get it hooked up to a diagnostic at your garage and go from there.
-
Just a thought, the thermostat, replaced one recently on another vehicle and all was cured, been getting problems for a while including flat battery warning lights etc before it gave up all together not allowing the engine to come up to full operating temp, easy fix for £7, worth checking. :)

Hi Carl, Well, I can see your dilemma, it's like choosing between your children ! Lol, not a bad one amongst them. Cut me in half and you will see Jaguar like a stick of rock, but you have thrown a curve ball in the shape of the Maserati, so, my preference as follows: 1. Maserati 2. XJ supersport 3. XKR 4. Evora, They are all good cars (not so sure about the Evora) but I would go for the Maserati purely on rarety factor and they are stunning to look at. You haven't put the F Type V8 on your list, now if that was there, I would be going for that, it's rare, stunning to look at, beautifully put together and sounds like a thunderstorm on a bad day. Good luck A

Thanks for this Adrian, I was thinking of having this done in the spring as heard of great reports. cheers Andrew

Hi Chris, we had a similar problem recently with my wife's Nissan 4x4, it kept searching for gears, cruise would not work properly and it was running a bit rough plus the battery would go flat overnight and heater was a bit cool to say the least. I thought it was a battery problem so got that changed but problems continued, eventually after some considerable fault finding, I traced it to the thermostat, cost me 7bucks for a new one and after a 20 mile round trip everything started working correctly and battery has held its charge and has been fine since. Friend said that, if the engine cannot come up to the correct operating temp can be a cause of other issues with your vehicle management system. It's beyond me, but pleased it's running ok. Just thought I would mention it as you have similar issues albeit a different car. Good luck.

What Car Wax Polish Do you Recommend
Tigger replied to JOE-DOT-COM's topic in Jaguar Car Care and Detailing Inside & Out
Hi Joe, I use, Body : Meguiars gold class car wash to start, then Auto glym ultra deep shine, followed by Auto glym extra gloss protection. As an extra, I have my car a clay bar treatment once a year for a mirror finish. Wheels/ Tyres: Meguiars endurance tire gel, Auto Glym alloy wheel cleaner. Chrome/Chrome tail pipes: Autosol (as required). Windows: Auto Glym fast glass. Leather: Zymol leather cleaner followed by Auto Glym leather care cream. Dash/controls/binnacle etc, I just wipe over with a damp micro fibre cloth and dry off. Carpets: Any good household carpet cleaner is fine for marks. micro fibre cloths to apply the above. Its a mix of a few good brands to get the results I want. Regards A -
Phil, I noticed that, I buy quite a bit off Amazon and prices do fluctuate a bit on there.
