  1. I don’t have a car yet but I’m looking for a 4 litre Daimler Super 8, or a 4 litre Jaguar Sovereign from around 1997 to 2000. I asked Adrian Flux (Dan) for a quote for either car, so that I would have an idea how much I would have to spend. He passed me on to Jamie Bishop, and after giving him as much information as I could, I was astonished to be told by Jamie that for a limited mileage of 5,000 miles, the cost of comprehensive insurance to me with a £100 excess would be £165!!! What a great quote. That’ll do for me! Many thanks Jamie…….now to find a suitable car! John
  2. Reading between the lines...........I would say that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!
  3. Thanks for that Paul, I appreciate it. I've just found the one for a LWB Jag on line for £135. If I can find a sutable LWB Jag/Daimler, I might just get one ready for next winter. It can get rough up here in Newcastle! Many thanks. John
  4. Thanks for that guys. Very valuable information. Does anybody else have an opinion please? Many thanks. John
  5. As I have said elsewhere, I am thinking of buying an older Jaguar/Daimler as a ‘weekend’ car. Great for retirement. The problem is that it would have to stay outside on my drive because it won’t fit in my garage. I would be very interested to know if anybody on the forum has any experience of car covers? Do they work, do they not work.? Do they ‘sweat’ do they not ‘sweat’? Do they encourage rust, do they not encourage rust? Is their usually enough air flow to keep the car dry and rust free? Is it worth me investing in a good quality cover for the winter, or would the car be better off left in the open air? Any opinions, or experience would be gratefully received, because I have never used one. Many thanks. John
  6. Hello, I am thinking of buying an older 1998-2001 Daimler Super V8, (I am told that the Jaguar sovereign is very similar. Is this so?) I am trying to compile a list of pertinent questions to ask the sellers. Can anybody tell me please, is there a recommended mileage in the Jaguar/Daimler handbook to change the timing chain/belt? Can I expect a Jag with 130,000 miles to have had the timing chain and tensioners replaced? Many thanks. John Kirk
  7. Robert, With respect ……..as an ex University lecturer I would have thought that you would realise that there are several common sense ways of diminishing the damage to your ‘writings’ and thus reducing your rising heart rate! As a person who has a movement disorder (Generalised Dystonia) which means that among other things i have ‘wandering fingers’ that continually make typing mistakes and often delete whole messages, (which as you say is infuriating)………. I ALWAYS write everything in ‘Word’ first and save it as I go, then ‘copy and paste’ what I have written into the relevant destination. That way if I lose it I always have a copy. Simple common sense really! I think your criticism of the technical make up of this forum is quite unfair and unwarranted, as it is manned and run exclusively by volunteers, in their own unpaid time, for our benefit. (that is for my benefit AND yours), and thus should be applauded for their hard work and endeavours. We are all flawed human beings Robert. None of us are perfect. If there are deep seated problems with access to the forum as you suggest, nobody else has posted a complaint, which does seem odd, given your technical explanation! Always remember that there are other more subtle ways to complain such as a ‘private message’ to a moderator, without resorting to irate comments which do absolutely nothing to enhance the reputation of University lecturers, or even ex lecturers. Always treat others the way you would like to be treated by them! Have a nice day. John Kirk
  8. My humble apologies Geoff, you’re absolutely right it is a LWB, I have just re-read the advert, sorry! Please forgive my ignorance, but does that mean that all Daimler/Jaguar XJSs are V8. Can I ask another question that’s been bugging me please? Is there a recommended mileage to change the timing chain/belt and idlers? Many thanks. John
  9. Helló Geoff, Yes it certainly does look good doesn't it? Shame it's 230 miles from here, and it's not a LWB. Is the Sovereign a LWB? john
  10. Hello Geoff, Thanks for that. In answer to your question about the S- Type. i doubt if I could recognise an S- Type now. To me an S Type means back in the 60s. . They made them from 63 to 68. I am certainly not familiar with a 'modern' S Type. I just fancied a leiurely cruiser, a typical 'old man's car' a Daimler, now that I'm getting on a bit myself! John
  11. Hello folks, Whilst I feel I am in danger of asking what might appear to some of you on the forum as a classic ‘stupid’ question, I should say that it’s 50 years since I owned my last Jag, a 63 Mk II 3.4 , and even though back then, I took the engine and box out from underneath (the correct way) and stripped it of every nut and bolt, fitted new pistons and con rods, new valves etc,and re shimmed the tappets...........I know absolutely nothing of the V8s of today’s Jags, and can no longer do my own repairs. Now that I’m retired, it would be nice to have a ‘cruiser’ for weekends, to go ‘castle huntin’ in our lovely county of Northumberland. (We have the most castles and castle ruins of any county in England……around 73). Being 6ft 3ins, I have always hankered after an older LWB Daimler, a Super V8 of around 1998, but my budget is only about £4,000. My question is this: Obviously, most of the older Super V8s that I see advertised, have all done well over 100,000 miles. Am I asking for trouble buying a V8 that has done over 100,000 miles, and can anybody suggest any potential pitfalls to look for please? My current car is a Motability Skoda Yeti, but it would be great if I could find a nice leisurely Daimler cruiser for weekends. A proper Big Boy’s Toy! I think they are superb cars. Many thanks John
  12. Thanks for the welcome Jim and Andy, and the lovely photo of your pup called Pip. Incidentally, one of our cats is called ‘Mr Pip’. Having experienced some ‘not so nice’ forums, I am hoping that this forum is a cut above the rest, and certainly it would appear to be so. John
  13. Many thanks to you all for your comments and your welcome. They are much appreciated. I think as long as you have a sense of humour, you can usually conquer most things. If you can laugh at your own shortcomings, you're half way there. John Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you've got to start young!.
  14. Hello everybody, I'm a newbie to this forum, and can I just reiterate what has been said about the current state of ‘manners’ and courtesy in the community. As a person who cannot speak now because of illness, my experience of intolerance and bad manners out in the big wide world, would shock most people! I am retired engineer, so I’m not stupid, and yet a lot of people treat me with less than good manners, and often scuttle away and disappear when I enter a shop! With this in mind, I usually write a note of explanation beforehand on my laptop, and always include ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and hand it to the salesperson. I always smile and give a ‘thumbs up’ and always shake the person’s hand afterwards. There’s an old saying……….. ‘Manners maketh man’, and I believe it’s very true. It costs absolutely nothing to be civil, and smile. I live by the philosophy to treat others as I would like to be treated by them. As I look for an old Daimler Super V8, I know that I am really going to enjoy being part of this forum, and I would like to thank all the organisers for their hard (unpaid) work. Many thanks. John
  15. Hello, I’m a newbie to this forum, and I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I’m a retired engineer and seriously thinking of buying an older Daimler Super V8, to compliment my older age, to use at weekends! I love American cars, and I’ve had two Chevy Starcraft Dayvans in my time. My very first car way back in 1966 when I was 19, was a 5 year old Jaguar 3.4 MkII. I’m also interested in boats, ships and planes, and my wife and I are both animal lovers. John Kirk
